Audi R8 LMS GT5 Simulator Debuts at Gamescom 2011

Though Gamescom 2011 wasn’t nearly as exciting for GT fans as it was last year, Sony and Audi did use the event to launch an impressive new GT5 simulator built around an R8 LMS race car, similar to the one found in the game.

As you can see in the videos below, the R8 sits upon a pneumatic suspension that moves the chassis in response to what’s occurring on-screen. With the exception of a slightly modified roll-cage, the authentic interior features functional gauges, a real R8 LMS steering wheel, bucket racing seats, and a Dolby Digital sound system.

The R8 replaces the GT5 Prologue-based Audi TT-R simulator (where’s it going now?) which, according to Audi, has been driven by over 15,000 people at 240 events since 2005. Thanks to all of you who sent this in!

Wow it’s cool! I’d like have that car to play Gran Turismo 5! but they need to upload more premium car like that Audi race car in the next patch, please Polyphony.

  2. BodyDouble

Awesome body roll… need to firm up the suspension a bit… maybe head over to gt5-tuning.com for some tips. :)

I think the driver is trying to find another hole in the wall loop to get a best lap time?! :p

    1. EliteDreamer

The suspension is fine. (I know your joking) But you have to remember that the road tilts and elevates and such.

    1. VictoReX11

Forza 4 only have more cars and tracks. Gran Turismo 5 improved a lot of things of Gran Turismo 4, and for me, in a lot aspects, GT5 is better than Forza 4.

  3. scoop2004

Is it just me or is the motion simulation only there in the left/right axis. I didnt see the nose lift or drop during accel and braking at all

  4. Jon64½

I wanted to rip my hair out when I watched who ever was driving in that second video. I can’t believe that someone who actually got to try that, was driving into walls! Ahhh…

  5. funrun

I’m wondering if they incorporated T500RS steering assembly and their new shifter that will be showcased at the show. I don’t see any Thrustmaster logos on the car, but what else would they be using? Maybe Audi did their own FFB?

  6. Gapanja

Fock the “realism”,fock the “simulation”. The gameplay must be interesting & fun,and nothing more. there is no one simulator in this world, that can compare to a real life driving. And I think, playing forza 4 will deliver more fun (like forza 3 does for me) than gt5,despite that I’m a big gt series fan

    1. Foxiol

Go play Race 07 but not Forza if you want to have some good times against IA and online too. You have average but not bad looking cars and one of the best in car sound and engine sound in the entire market.
Still i love and play GT5 but many more in PC. (simulators)

    2. Magic Ayrton

Forza is a Cartoon.. but at least it has proper customisation, 4 will be a better visual treat though.. as for GT5 it needs to be sorted asap.

  7. eVilate

Whoever was driving in that second video…I’d be so embarrassed to get out of the car after that downright horrible driving.

  8. Kollosson

Yeah, this car should be premium, GT5 has had some fails,
what about the top gear thing? we have Forza 4 maxing out the top gear deal with clarksons voice and the actual top gear replay, i can’t believe GT5 did’nt have the top gear replay thats just crazy. I’m a huge GT fan, have been since the first instalment but i have to say, Forza 4 is looking pretty damn awesome. It will be a sad day if GT loses that crown but i can see it coming.

    1. Erik

I wouldn’t get too hyped about Top Gear in Forza. Sure, it’s nice to try out the supercars at the test track, in the same way as it is nice to do so in GT5. Clarkson might add an extra bit of nicelyness to it, but I suspect that Tope Gear is, and will always be, best on BBC. Maybe Forza’s Top Gear will be better than GT’s, but I have a feeling that it will be a disappointment anyway, because it will not be like the Top Gear we watch on TV. But you are certainly right, they are maxing it out. 10 variations on the Top Gear test track layout… the geek factor is getting close to Yamauchi’s Skyline obsession.

    2. FlareKR

Nothing can beat Kaz’s Skyline obsession, unless I change the color of a Midnight Purple edition R34 to white. MUAHAHAHA!

    3. blackninja

Forza4 is maxing out their top gear deal because keep in mind that Forza is Microsoft and Microsoft are the top leaders in marketing software… whereas Sony is the top leader in marketing televisions… there is a big difference…. just marketing!

  9. Devedander

What would it take to get the kinetic feedback out of GT5 to make a motion simulator feasible? I swear more than 3D or better graphics or super steeringwheels I want motion simulation… that would make it SO much better…

    1. funrun

Well technically it would be possible for PD to develop a external device that is connected to the PS3 expansion port, and then the user can incorporate motion shocks on their rigs, calibrate them with the device and voila.. but that’s just not going to happen.

  10. sumbrownkid

Does it also replicate the small electrical problems Audi’s love to get down the road?

    Lol, jk, sweet rig.

    1. Erik

So tell me, what would the difference be if they used a premium car? Would the grass be greener? Would the sky be more blue? Would the car go faster?

    2. infamousDee

Yo dawg, I heard you like interiors so we put an interior in your interior so you can drive while you drive! Wait… how ridiculous would that be?

  11. Richard

they should have the actual rear view mirrors have screens so that you could actually look behind through them in the game

    1. FlareKR

Along with maybe catching a glimpse of a photographer somehow “moving” 200 mph and following your car up Mulsanne – oh now, he’s getting closer!

  12. Cruden anyone?

Ever heard about Cruden Simulators? GT today is everything AROUND a second class videogame or “simulator” if you dare…

    1. Erik

OMG lol ure so rite and the dvd player of the ps3 is so second class compared to the IMAX movie theatre in Sydney, Australia.

On a serious note, Cruden Simulators is not a video game company, they are building simulators. I am pretty sure that a PS3 and GT5 is a bit cheaper than buying a simulator from Cruden.

    2. Cruden anyone?

And an R8 race car is video game hardware?

My point is, for the price of this “simulator” I’d rather get the “cheapest” Cruden, by far…

  13. .....

i don’t get it when ppl comment on the game version of the car being standard. why would you need the interior view if your sitting in the flipping simulator car!.. with a Hydraulic system, “authentic interior” andd functional gauges. lol sooo you want an interior in the interior? stupid. the hood camera is perfect since your sitting in your interior view.

    1. nedostalk

LOL, you wont find that Audi Race Car sitting in your bedroom with the next patch, it’s just there to promote the brand Gran Turismo, but if the car is a standard one in GT5 it’s an epic fail. LOL!!!

  14. big-muscley-pete

That car is one of the best things i have ever seen in my life.
It aint even tha expensive, it only 2,9 mil
I dont know bout all of u but im definately buyin one.

  15. ChicoMaloXD

Booooooo! This is so last year.
At least put the car as premium for the event.
I hope to hear something cool about GT5, soon. They are a year delayed with this!

  16. HELLAFLUSH240SX

Why are they even at Gamescom?
It’s not like GT5 is new, been out for what 1 year and a half?

Ea should show us the new Madden 2009.

    /Sarcasm

Also, since its standard, you can only sit on the roof and play, there’s no interior in that car.

    1. GT_Die_Hard

I’d really like to see that! As for other views: Lay in front of the car (bumperview) and hang about 4 feet in the air right behind the car (“3rd Person” view) That would be the ultimate GT5 experience :D

    2. HELLAFLUSH240SX

I’m cool. I got my copy last February so Im not sure when it came out exactly. Still a long time ago though

    3. Dmarc

      lmao
      February ? really? ..
weird we didnt see anything from you on the site .. earliest we saw were a couple weeks before it released
      ..

  17. BDA

Just placed my order for one, although they said they would need a complete new R8 to strip down and build it up from there, but I said its only money so do what you gotta do, they said cool, it’ll be ready next weekend, I said ring me when its done.

  18. HaveGasWillTravel80

Yeah,I agree. They could have done something with a slightly higher “WOW” factor. I’d say screens in place of the windshield, side mirrors, rear view mirror, side windows, and rear window would have really taken the cake.
However,I must say this. The hydraulic suspension action is pretty freakin’ awesome!
Amazing how far the gaming industry has come. A hell of a long way since the days of Caleco vision and Atari. Hey,who had a Commodore 64? Old-school!!!!

    1. C.A. Williams

Lol I was born in 1988 and played my moms old intelivision does anybody remember that system it was 10x better then Atari 2600 lol

    2. SKOT Free

@C.A. Williams……Surely you jest!?! Intellivision was Garbage! Never forget that Horrible Baseball Game, you could bunt a homerun over 3rd base.

  19. azrael

If you wondering what the german guy is talking about. His name is Christopher Mies, runner up in a R8 LMS in 2010s 24h Nürburgring race. And he says the simulator is funh and quite realistic. I doubt that is true although, he is a audi employee after all.

  20. Caliente

All that money spent on the car, and the couldnt get a bigger screen? Or swap out front window with a screen?

    1. BobWho

      Atleast your optimistic!

Wouldn’t be to much of a challenge. The R8 has an interior model. Work off it. :)

    1. Sandboxgod

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Huge PD fail not to have a premium version of official playstation cars like this

    2. Erik

What do you mean “standard”? If this is not cockpit view, then what is?

And frankly it doesn’t matter at all in this case, because you don’t need the cockpit view when you have this thing, and you’re not seeing the exterior either…

    3. Really?

People lough because they are promoting the game with a standard car. I hope you understand there’s no chances to have that real Audi R8 at home, your GT5 blue ray has only an ugly standard model.

    1. FORZA=Arcade casual

I was LOLing my ass off. It had to be some casual who has NEVER played a racing game before. They should start out with Forza. NO. I take that back. BURNOUT.

    2. tejsodi

I’m pretty sure he was meaning to play bad so he could feel the hydraulics moving side to side… Kids these days
