I know. I suppose what I meant was this is all for show. MP's appearing to to be intervening on behalf of people when everyone knows nothing can be done anyway.

Actually, I think you'll find there will be very little the government can do - the Sky/BBC deal is legal under the terms of the Concorde Agreement, the British Grand Prix is guaranteed to be shown live on the BBC, and there is a precedent for international sporting events with British competitors and teams being shown on Pay TV.
The problem is more spending 18m to make viewers pay to watch sky when it could have gone 100% to ITV, C4, C5.

BBC was the holder of the rights at the time of the deal. They were entitled to do what they wanted with those right, until such time as they handed the right back to FOM.

^ True but the BBC is solely funded by tv licences and therefore the public want answers.

That is the answer. The BBC wanted to cut costs, but they also wanted to retain the Formula 1 coverage because of the ratings. So they brokered the Sky deal, and will no doubt show the ten races that will get them the most viewership (like Silverstone) live, and show extended highlights of the ten worst-performing races (like Valencia). They're well within their rights to do that. Talk of it being some massive conspiracy to deny Channel 4 and ITV the rights is little more than a conspiracy theory, one dreamt up by angry fans who expected the BBC to show twenty races per year, live and uninterrupted, in prime time and for free.

This.

Luvverly full and uninterrupted HD coverage and for no extra (to current fees, obviously) charge. Really looking forward to what Sky show next year, their sports coverage is rarely anything other than exceptional.

I'm happy since you don't even need sky sports to watch it, if you have the HD pack you can get it for free as well. So an extra £10 for HD f1 and lots of other HD channels or £20 for SD sky sports, easy choice for me

But wait, I still have o be angry because the commentary teams will most likely be split up and anything after Brundle/D.C. will probably be infuriating to watch.

Is there any chance of them showing the F1 support races?

Currently Eurosport have the rights to GP2, GP3 and the Porsche Supercup.

I have a Sky HD box, but I just have the free HD channels and don't have Sky Sports. Anyone know if I qualify to watch the F1 races? Sky website isn't clear on that matter.

The BBC have announced the races they will be showing on free-to-air: China, Spain, Monaco, Valencia, Silverstone, Spa, Singapore, Korea, Abu Dhabi and Brazil.

I can't imagine that this will be a particularly popular choice.

Dammit I will replace Valencia for Suzuka, in any case these broadcasts seems to be more than what I was expecting (I expected 3 races at best).

Personally I like the ones the BBC got apart from yawn fest which is Valencia which they should have replaced with Austin. They got the modern and mostly exciting ones. Most of the older European circuits I'm not really going to miss all that much because we have seen action on them for decades.

I wonder if we will see full replays or at the very least highlights of the ones SKY air, maybe the day after.

At the grands prix that are not being broadcast live, there will be a highlights package shown later in the day.

For the European races this will be a 90-minutes programme broadcast at 5.30pm, while for the events that take place in the Far East there will be a two-hour programme shown at 2pm.

F1 Forum remains, live free practive remains, everything available on the iPlayer, and we'll also be presenting from ALL the races. #bbcf1
Jake Humphrey staying at BBC. David Croft (Confirmed?) and Martin Brundle (Unconfirmed?) to Sky.

I wonder if Ted Kravitz will stay at BBC. I love that guy.

Subscribers to Sky HD get it free. Whereas normally with Sky HD you only get the HD channels for the packs you pay for (ignoring the free ones), this isn't so with the F1 HD channel, thus why you don't need to be a Sky Sports subscriber, but will need to subscribe to Sky HD, which is £10/month.

I'm slightly surprised at this, I didn't think they'd open up their F1 HD channel to non-Sports subscribers.
