Ferrari F40 - ta da! Heading to the bookstore, on a lark I went the long way around, and there it was. Quickly parked and got out of the car, and started up with the picture taking. After getting a good look, I realized this car was a bit different. This car was special. I had a ride once in this car. Not recently, but around 4 years ago at a local car meet. Granted, it was a short ride and no speeding laws were broken, but ridden all the same. I looked around for the owner, but he was nowhere to be found. Photos will do for now.

It's incredible - an early pick for DYSAGT Sighting of the Year. It's not the sighting that, say, an Enzo or an F50 would be (based purely on production numbers) but I'd put it in that general ballpark. It certainly outdoes the Testarossas and NSXs I've been putting up. Really incredible.

So, I've never seen an F40. Anywhere. Ever. Show, dealer - it's never happened. What does it look like? How incredible really is it? You've clearly seen at least this one before - is it really all it's cracked up to be?

Plates were purchased within the last year - the vehicle could've changed hands since you last saw it. Probably not though, since when F40s change hands, they usually go long distances.

Incredible sighting. Thanks for the photos. You made my night!

EDIT: today's theme, for me, was 'crap you don't expect to see women driving.'

That includes:

And:

The female driver of the Elise was in her 40s and on the phone; the female driver of the RS4 had to be in her 50s at least. There was also this female-driven oddity:

The E550 4Matic isn't out yet, but I guess it's about to be - an online check says magazines got a preview a month ago, so maybe this is just one of the first. Either way, I wasn't aware of it. I question Mercedes' introducing a new model on an already five-year-old platform, but then again I love the E63 and I'd be a hypocrite if I just wondered about the E550 4Matic. Florida 'Manufacturer' tags.

Not much else in the way of expensive cars today although I did catch my first Denver-area M6:

Otherwise, just random oddities: an E36 M3 convertible (the only car ever simultaneously cancelled and released), a GMC Sierra Denali (the truck with four-wheel steering), a new S80 (my third sighting of a vehicle that came out four months ago - sales looking good, Volvo), and a Mazda MP3 (one of only 1,500) at the golf course.

^ Agreed, this just made my day. Such a beautiful car.
Out of curiosity, is there something going through the lugnut on the wheel? It looks like theres some sort of pin in it.

Because there were no lug nuts, I believe the pin's purpose is to provide leverage so you could unscrew the center cap, which served as the only tie-down for the wheels and tires. I can't be sure though.

I believe the pin is there as added security to ensure the wheels stay on. With there only being a single nut keeping the wheel from just falling off had the nut not been tightened fully or even cross-threaded, the pin secures the nut to the hub spindle.

I think it's a 993 RS actually. The GT2 had plastic, extended wheel arches.

The owner was walking behind me so I had to pretend that I was playing on my phone. Nice pun.

But it has the GT2's spoiler.

The plot thickens...

It was the 964 RS that had no spoiler, the 993 RS had a GT2 style wing. Infact it's the 993 RS Clubsport that has the GT2 style wing, the regular 993 RS had a Turbo style whaletail wing.

The 993 was available in two different flavours - regular and clubsport. Either wing is technically correct

The pin on Centre locking wheel nuts in purely used to ensure the wheel nut itself does not come off should it loosen due to vibration. The picture below shows how the pin or clip is actually attached to the centre shaft, rather than the nut itself.

This image (actually from a scale model) shows the shaft and pin, without the wheel and tyre in place.

Centre locking wheel nuts themselves are tightened and released in the same way that standard wheel nuts are, the tool involved is simply bigger.

MAny 993 owners have the GT2 wing and front spoiler package here in HK. In fact I saw a yellow one just yesterday. But, yeah it doesn't have the original GT2 arches. Still, nice spot!

F40 - Mindblowing. Not as rare as you may think (I saw around 20 in one place at Ferrari's 50th anniversary at Silverstone a few years back, but still an amazing car and one of THE best sightings in this thread! Great stuff!!!

Thanks to Scaff, TheCracker, and M5Power for the explanations on the F40 wheel pin.

I don't even think we got the 993 GT2 here in the States yet I see the wing with some regularity.
