Beater or Sleeper? GT6 Car of the Week Thread

Yeah, I'm a RlyR driver, been racing with the club for 3 years :) Would be nice to see some GTP people come over our way sometime.

In stock trim the car felt fine on Sport Softs; I ran with the stock springs in a race and finished near the front, then went to the Racing Soft Springs upgrade for Trial Mountain and have been using them ever since. The car did have understeer issues when left stock however, less so after stripping weight out of the car.

Yeah, I kinda check your website from time to time, I like how organized everything is with the team's wikis and so on. Time is not really on my side when it comes to online racing, so I feel that even if I tried to have some races with the RRR group I'd sort of lag behind due to lack of practice. It is a bit difficult to find some time between college and college work...

Understeer issues, eh? Odd, but then again a MR layout is one of the trickiest layouts in the car world... Need to pay attention to that.

As we learnt last night, the 458 has some pretty serious rivals in the form of the Lambo LP670-SV, SRT Viper and the NSX Concept.

My only concern is the same one that got brought up when we raced the 288 GTO, how do you categorise a high end supercar in the COTW way?

May have to give the guys in Woking a call. :P

Well, you can't look too high up the pyramid, some of the stronger supercars will soundly thrash the 458. The Woking approach is not the most original of approaches, but it's a start.

The Woking approach is my last resort, I'll be searching for some possible outsiders which could take the fight to the 458 in the mean time. ;)

First time here, don't hate :D

BAP_Shockz's Car of the Week Experience

This week's car is the Ferrari 458 Italia '09

Starting from the top, I reckon.

I'm not exactly a famous guy. Hell, you wouldn't stop me walking past you and then ask for my autograph. But if there's one thing I love more than anything, it's driving. Ever since I was 5, sitting in my dad's Ford Laser, I've always loved cars. I drove them in video games, and now I get to drive cars for real. It's surprising how fast time flies when you have fun doing what you love.

Now, Ferraris are rare where I come from. Within my short and pathetic life leading up to now, I can count the number of Ferraris I have seen on the streets using both my hands. I've always enjoyed ogling at 'em when I see them, though. They're perfectly designed and are beautiful in every possible way. Not to mention, they go like stink too. So, imagine my surprise when Ferrari decided to allow me to drive one of their best and fastest masterpieces on the road.

Y'know, this thing.
Circuito de la Sierra_25.jpg

Of course, they flew me out to Spain for this. I'm not arguing, all my expenses were paid for, so my job was to just push this thing to my limits. Spain has some of the best driving roads I can think of, and it's no more obvious than it is here. It still surprises me though, how Ferrari were generous enough to allow me, a relative nobody in the driving world, to have a free ride in one of their crowning achievements.

So, as I sat there, getting ready to pull off in a cloud of smoke, I pinched myself. Multiple times. They all hurt, so I'm pretty sure I'm not dreaming.

I set off at a snail's pace, gradually picking up speed as I get acquainted with the car. What I then realized was that this car is a pussycat at low speeds. It's so easy to drive it scares me somewhat. To me, supercars are usually a wet dream, a fantasy, incredible to drive fast, and yet hell for everyday use. This thing though, it's certainly something else. However I found out that this car does have some mild understeer at moderate speeds, although it's not really troubling. Getting comfortable with the car, I increase my pace, and put the foot down......

Circuito de la Sierra_27.jpg

The sensation is something I can only describe as something James May may have said before, a sort of fizzy feeling "down there". This thing.......picks up speed, like a homeless guy picking up money falling from the sky. It's that fast. Even at this speed it's still manageable, it's not difficult to drive fast at all, as long as you know what you're doing. The 458 grips at every corner, and it keeps gripping. It's sublime, majestic, fantastic, and everything in between. I spent a good 4 hours driving this car to my limits, until the tires finally wore out. When I pulled into the pits to call it day, I took a few steps back just to admire this car, there is just something about it that draws me in further. Not to mention I didn't crash it, which was the one thing I dreaded going into this.

Imagine my surprise and extreme happiness when they then asked me to take part in a 2-lap exhibition race at the world renowned Autodromo Internazionale Monza circuit, in Italy. I was to fly there immediately, and take part in the race tomorrow. Of course I'd say yes, I mean, who in their right mind would say no to that?

The next day.....
Sunlight penetrates my eyes as I am sitting in the cockpit of the very same 458 that I was driving around Sierra, now in Monza. Luck wasn't completely on my side however, as due to my late entry, I was to start....at the back of the 10-car pack. Not to mention it was a rolling start, which means whoever was in 1st place, would have created a sizable lead by the time I'd have caught up. It was a challenge I'd have to face head-on, and that means I'd have to drive like a hooligan.

The race started, and directly in front of me was a 70's Plymouth Superbird (the hell is it doing here?). Obviously an easy task for the 458, I also overtook another Ferrari, a 512BB, that was in front of the Superbird. Within the first lap, I had already overtaken 3/4 of the grid, and was hot on the heels on 2nd place, a Zonda C12S. The rabbit in front, a KTM X-Bow R, had already been ahead by 5 seconds by the time I'd caught up to 2nd.

During the 2nd lap, I pushed the 458 like never before after overtaking the Zonda, and was catching up fast to the X-Bow. During the race, I felt like I could always push the car through any corner, and it would go wherever I wanted it to. I could use the full width of the track and go faster through any corner. This was definitely a car that is fantastic on the track, as it is on the road. The more I drove it, the more I fell in love with it. Right, final hairpin, I'm about 1 second behind as we exit the straight leading into the hairpin. Feeling brave, I put my foot down the moment I exited the fast hairpin into the final stretch to the finish line. I was hitting 160mph, but.......
Autodromo Nazionale Monza (No Chicanes)_2.jpg
It wasn't enough. The X-Bow beat me to the line by 6 tenths of a second. Considering I had started from the back of the pack, it was a commendable effort, but I can't help feeling I could have done better. Ferrari were mighty impressed with what I had done though, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

Throughout the 2 days I have spent with this car, I had fallen in love with it over and over again. It just kept impressing me, with it's sublime road handling, and it's feral prowess on the track. I'm not a very fast driver, but if this car can make the Average Joe look like Michael Schumacher (Get well soon, Schumi!), then I'm sold. As for this thread, Beater or Sleeper, I think the answer is fairly obvious, wouldn't you say so? A great experience, and a solid package.

Overall score: 9/10

As the name implies, we're not very good anyways (most of us ;)). Many of us would simply show up on the night without any prior practice, do a few laps in a 30 minute session and then go racing. Still a lot of fun.

Well, if anything, you are very organized in "being rubbish". Most of your race videos show plenty of close racing and whatnot, and some great liveries too (damm F:censored:a ). Fun racing I do see, and that is what matters to me, I hate doing endless laps against nothing (unless they're car testing laps). And some members have raced for so long, I think they can't call themselves "rubbish" anymore because they've actually gotten good!

Yeah we have a few quick guys now; I reckon in GT6 there are 2-3 quite fast guys up front but all the other positions are fair game. I think we're leaning towards a Super GT series for the next season, so if you or anyone else fancies having a go the links are in my sig :)

Getting back to the 458 however, I haven't raced it again since last night. I have fitted a front splitter now but I'm not sure if it's effect will only be cosmetic or if it actually adds any downforce. If it doesn't cure the understeer I may have to fit some adjustable parts.

A front splitter? Maybe it won't affect the handling much, but then again I am not a parts especialist, so feel free to correct my idea. Perhaps a reworked suspension might be a better cure for the understeer.

As far as I know and have tested, all changeable body parts are purely cosmetic in GT6 apart from adding a new rear wing or flat floor. Rim sizes may alter gearing slightly, however, but I notice little if any difference.

Which is why I find it a pain in the behind when half of my garage is considered as "tuned" when the only thing on it is a front lip, which has zero actual affect. Same as removing a stock rear wing, it does nothing for the car/physics but stops you from entering tuning prohibited races anyway.

Hey people... was just reading that there will be server maintenance on Dec. 16 (tomorrow) starting at 23:00 EST. Maybe we will have to delay our COTW Tuesday until Wednesday. What say you @McClarenDesign ???

I hope this might resolve all our recent racing troubles, but not holding breath in fear of looking like a smurf...

Cheers

If we're unable to start by 10:30p, we will race on Wednesday instead, 10p CST as usual.

On Comfort Hard tires, it tied with the KTM X-Bow R '12 at Laguna Seca.
On Sports Hard tires, it tied with the Corvette ZR-1 '09 at Suzuka Circuit.

From the Car Info screen:

"The successor to the F430, the Ferrari 458 Italia appeared at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Ferrari's V8 Midship series has evolved every 5 years starting in 1989 with the 348, the F355 in 1994, the 360 Modena in 1999 and the F430 in 2004, and of course this 458 is another masterpiece in the bloodline.

The chassis is a newly designed aluminum space frame, and the direct injection V8 engine produces 562 hp/398.5 ft-lb, an astonishing figure from a normally aspirated engine. The transmission is a 7-speed dual clutch 2-pedal MT, and the shift speed has been greatly improved over previous models. Their Manettino system unifying the engine, gearbox, suspension, E-DIFF, F1 Trac, ESP and high-performance ABS controls has advanced greatly, and allows the selection of 5 modes: Low Grip, Sports, Race, CT cut, and CST cut. Now it is possible for the driver to enjoy safe, fun driving more than ever. The suspension utilizes double wishbones in the front and multilinks in the rear, and the magnetic suspension first used in the 599 has also evolved into its second generation version.

Many new innovations have also been made in terms of aerodynamics, aggressively incorporating the newest racing technologies gained daily in the front lines of F1 racing. As a result, the specs of this car are extreme, accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds, with a maximum speed of 201 mph. The body styling is a straightforward evolution from the Enzo and F430, carrying over the sweeping flow and sharpness of the Pininfarina design.

Considering that the final and very special grade model of the F430 Scuderia accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds, with a maximum speed of 198 mph, you can see the definite progress they have made."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but does the winner of GTT's race choose the next Car of the Week?
Not really, if that was the case then I would have quite a few picks to my name. :D

Sometimes it's random and sometimes it's down to the reviews.

Take me for example, when I reviewed the Caterham Fireblade I made a tongue in cheek observation about the length of the gearing on the first 3 three gears, by comparing it to the length of some marriages. That got me the next weeks choice. :P

Bottom line is that @McClarenDesign gets to choose who picks the next weeks car(s) and such, so knock out those reviews and enjoy yourself.

Your turn will come soon. 👍

Christmas comes Early...

Well, tis the season, and we are all getting early xmas gifts this week. One of them just happens to be a Ferrari!

VOoKdqc.jpg

A freakin 458 to boot! Most Ferrari's bring the ooh's and ahh's out of the average person, but this one is just special. It's a model to show off what technology brings to the world of automotive excellence. We've been lucky here at the COTW to test out a bunch of nice cars, but this is the second Ferrari this year! Muahahaha, excellent.

http://auto.ferrari.com/en_EN/sports-cars-models/car-range/458-italia/

In GT6, this is the first Ferrari that I bought. We all got the 430 Scud as a prize car, so it seemed fitting to have its successor too. And since they are all premium cars, I just happen to own all of them now. Not that I'm a fan or anything... ;). As I was just getting into online racing, a certain @McClarenDesign invited me along to a race where I met another Crazy Canuck for the first time, Monty (@Soyuz 77 )... and what were we driving? A Ferrari at Spa.

AIZukFM.jpg

This week, one of the races was at Sarthe. A great track in of itself, but a suitable testing ground for some iconic racing brands. Perfect for the 458, it lets it use all 7 gears, and tests its handling prowess if you dare to push it to its limits. For myself, this is the Ferrari to have in your stable even if you hate the brand. I love the way it handles, and its speed is exceptional... especially from a standing start.

Just for fun, I included this Car & Driver comparison...

http://www.caranddriver.com/compari...4-12c-2011-porsche-911-gt2-rs-comparison-test

I would say thank you for this gift. Let alone the other cars we got this week. Just by doing the Seasonals, I got 5 free cars, including the 2 newest VGT's. Tons of racing fun this week, let alone the fun we've had this whole year.

Cheers

There is nothing but love for the 458 it seems :D So happy right now :P

Well, what did you think it would happen when you picked one of the greatest Ferraris in history? ;) It's perfect in every single regard; it's pretty, it goes like stink, and it tackles corners like the best of them. Couple that with the fact that it might be the last Junior Ferrari to both be Naturally Aspirated and to be built in the era of Luca Di Montezolo (I know, that surname is wrong), and you know why we love the 458. :D
