Laguna Seca Lap Times For 449 Cars (And Counting!)

Can you test the CLK Touring Car and Yellowhat YMS Supra?

1:40.365 - 565 - Toyota YellowHat YMS Supra '05
1:40.820 - 571 - Mercedes-Benz CLK Touring Car '00

Best I can do with a controller. 550 PP+ cars on CH tires really need a wheel to do their best.

How come nobody wants me to test any slow cars? Those I actually want to drive lol the Audi R8 LMP is going to be another ice-skating affair, but I will oblige.

I could give you MY answer, but I don't want to offend anyone, or get banned :D, so I will keep my answer to myself. Frankly, I think it's fantastic that you're giving so much attention to the lower-powered to mid-powered cars in GT6. You can have so much fun in these cars when racing with a group of friends because the cars are a little bit easier to control. Also, you're doing these reviews on Comfort Hard tires. I'm actually surprised that you've even tested some of the cars that you have. You must have some incredible throttle control, my friend. As always, keep up the fantastic work. You have no idea how often I refer to your Suzuka Lap Times data and this Laguna Seca Lap Time data each week.

That means a lot to me, thank you! As much as throttle control is needed, sensitive steering inputs are crucial as well to avoid excessive over or understeer. It can be a brutal pain over 550 PP, especially when you throw MR or FR into the equation, but especially MR.

The Carlton turned 25 years old this year, meaning it is now legal to import into the USA. I wouldn't, though, since its best time of 1:52 is barely quicker than say, a ten year old Acura RSX Type S. It's just too heavy, a complete departure from what Lotus is known for.

Took me about an hour to test those three. I'm especially proud of my time in the Punto. Don't think 1:59 is possible even with a wheel.

The diesel has 12 more hp, 104 more ft-lbs, but weighs 80 kg more. After a couple laps shifting at redline, I found it best to shift about 1,000 rpm short of that, to stay in boost. Just another reason why manual is better/faster than automatic.

Edit:

1:56.058 - 387 - BMW 2002 Turbo '73

1:55 is possible, but after 5 straight laps getting in front of my ghost and then losing it, I gave up. I don't have the patience right now. Think I'm done for the day lol

Once I finish testing every car, I might go back to all the times that ended on a .0 and get them down to at least a .9 or better.

Which car did you short-shift 1000 RPM below redline? The 120d or the 120i? Or both?

Awww really? I was kind of hoping you'd choose a new track and do all the cars over again. Of course that's incredibly selfish of me :sly:, but these Lap Times Lists you make are awesome reference material. 👍

The 120d has a turbo-diesel engine with a low redline of around 5000-6000 if I remember right. It stops accelerating fast 1,000-1,500 rpm before redline. My ghost was shifting at redline, and I was shifting early and pulled ahead a lot so that's how I knew to short-shift for the best lap time.

The 120i is naturally aspirated.

Ahh, for some reason I thought the 120i was a 4-cylinder turbo. Thanks for the clarification.

The '79 Bluebird is a half second quicker than the '79 Civic.

The difference between the '88 and '91 Silvia on track is almost unnoticeable. What the '88 lacks in a minor bump in power, it makes up for with 20 less kg's.

Accord vs. CL

1:52.970 - 421 - Honda Accord Coupe EX '03
1:55.503 - 419 - Acura CL 3.2 Type-S '03

Accord is FAST. That said, I hate both of these cars with a passion. Combined, it took me an HOUR to get these lap times that I'm satisfied with, the Accord especially. I doubt ANYBODY can get 1:51 with that car, even the #1 GT player in the world. The understeer on the Acura made me want to throw my controller. It's so horrible. I've never had to restart a lap with any other cars as often as I did in these two. They take forever to get 'round a corner.

Wow. That Ford Focus RS is in pretty good company. I just checked out the list to see what else set a similar lap time. That FocuS RS is less than three-tenths of a second behind the 1996 Corvette Grand Sport!

It's a badass car. Weighs 1,050 kg (2,315 lbs) and has around 220 hp. When you lift off the gas, it rotates the back end around really nicely. Just gotta be careful about not getting back on the power too soon because it has some major understeer issues. It's more than 2.5 seconds quicker than the premium Focus ST '13.

Sounds nice SuzukaStar... I've been doing my own little testing of 100% stock cars on Grand Valley Speedway. I just finished up with the C7 Corvette. I can't believe how much that thing understeers. You give it any throttle on one of the high speed bends and you just plow straight into a wall. Being a Gran Turismo n00b, I spent so much of my first year only driving tuned cars. Im enjoying driving stock, un-modified cars so much right now. A lot more challenging - gotta be so disciplined with throttle control, etc...

Update!

1:46.241 - 454 - Honda NSX Type S '01

This was a little too close to the Type R '02 lap time of 1:45.760 so I went back to that car and did almost a full second better.

1:44.811 - 468 - Honda NSX Type R '02

I think I'll retry the C7 Corvette tomorrow and see if I can do any better.

Edit:

Can't do any better than my original 1:44.0 unfortunately. I can pull off 1:44's all day long though. It does have some bad understeer when you're not on the gas. I use CH tires, so any gas will send the rear tires into a frenzy if I'm not careful.

About the Focus RS 1 : yeah that's a ****ing good car. It's the best factory FWD on Trial Mountain right now, and it will probably stay that way. That also quite matches real life, I know several of those as well as some Focus RS2 : the latest really feels dull, like someone threw to much power at a civilian car and added some cosmetics to make it look mean, it feels like there's more marketing involved than engineering. The first one, however, feels much better in every way, and acts like a true mountain pass eater.

It's also the fastest factory FWD on Laguna Seca, beating the Integra Type R '04 by 7 tenths.

No idea why Ford thought it was a better idea to release the Focus SVT (ST170) here instead. It weighed over 400 lbs heavier and had about 50 horsepower less (because it was naturally aspirated.)

I drove the Celica for 26 miles to pull off that 1:46 lap. Knew I had it in me. The Opera S2000 can do 1:43 but the damn car is so light that it's twitchy. The Buick and Subaru laps are pretty solid for a controller.

2:05.841 - 324 - Scion xB '03

The xA is 20 kg lighter, and shorter in length and height, making it faster on the straights and more tossable.

Also re-tested the Subaru BRZ. Got it down from a 1:52.027 to a 1:51.810

And finally, a go-kart!

Almost the exact same power-to-weight ratio. Z34 is up by 49 horses and 210 kg's. Was the Z34 really that much fatter than the Z33? It's only 20 kg's lighter than the Z33 Roadster!
