[PC] DCS 1.5 & 2.0 Open Alpha

This is going to be awesome.

I'll be looking forward to the screenshots of our "out of the envelope" maneuvers. Or in my case, the crashes after attempting said maneuvers :)

Downloaded the beta and tried out the Su-27. What happens after you press the 'S' button is frightening. I quickly ran back to my F-15

So I got the update and I'm playing as I type.... and I'm about to rage quit back to the F15.

For whatever reason, I CAN'T RAISE MY LANDING GEAR!

Srsly. Cabin power is on and I assume my hydraulics are on because I have full control over flaps and such, but I cannot raise my gear. I see three options for controlling landing gear now, and each one doesn't do the trick. I've only ever been able to get my nose gear to retract, which is a good start I guess, but I'm flying around like a stupid little nugget right now.

I've been looking at guides and through the key commands in game, but I can't see what I'm missing that would fix it. Maybe they've added some extra step and neglected to let us know wth it is (likely) or they've broken the Su27.

So.... halp?

Also I accidentally found out what pressing S does. Don't ever accidentally press S.

Try taking off with mil power rather than AB, and climb. There may be a speed limit on landing gear integrity. The Su-27 PFM is in beta, whether or not you're using it on the beta install or regular install.

For some reason, when I update my PFM is missing and my Flanker uses the old flight model so I haven't been able to try it yet.

That did it. Weird, I was hitting it right after I got airborne. I'm surprised it would hit that limit so quickly. I was maybe ~350 knts when I tried.

And I didn't realize it was still in beta... interesting.

Thanks!

Edit: This thing is crazy. It flies really well until you hit S to go into [insert military acronym here] mode for the Cobra. Then it's like a paper plane.

First time I did it, nothing really bad happened but it was embarrassingly sloppy. Second time, my engines cut out for a second while setting up for it, which was weird, and my Cobra was sloppy again. Third time, it was sloppy and then the plane went into an inverted flat spin and my engines immediately died. [Respawn]. Fourth time, sloppy Cobra again and my engines died, which then put me in a flat spin.

I'm not good enough to tell if this is super detailed on a level beyond my abilities or if it's just unfinished.

Probably the former.

*Goes back to F15*

Maybe you can't tell by this photo, but the wings flex!

I know what you mean. I ran so hard back to my beloved F-15. I had the same with landing gear. Pretty annoying but you practically have to raise them at the moment you raise the nose. Going back to 70% throttle at that time may help get you more time.

Maybe hitting 'S' gives the pilot vodka :P

I've got a day free and a bit of vodka. Let's see what happens :D

Update: I'm used to getting my gear up in time before it's locked down 👍

I can kinda do a Cobra.... I've done about 4 now without getting into a flat spin and dying. For one of them I got into a spin but saved it. But most of the time a spin in this plane means certain death... it's brutal. It's like it knows you're trying to recover but it insists on doing everything you don't want it to do.

Okay. I did a full ~60 minute flight with this thing and it was the best yet. I'm a lot more comfortable with this thing now.

It was a mostly normal flight with the intent to get to know the plane better. I only went into vodka mode once, spun, and recovered. As soon as it starts to become an "oh 🤬!" moment, reduce power to almost idle. I noticed whenever I did that, it prevented the plane from going into a suicidal nose dive which usually leads to an inverted flat spin. If it even starts to dive with power on, it's bad news...

Anyway, after I did that I stayed out of vodka mode and just flew it within the envelope. I did a bit of fast maneuvering, low speed stuff, and some flying in the mountains. This plane... wow.

When it's flown without fists of ham (guilty) it's really pleasant but it never lets you forget that it can put you in a bad place really quickly. It was a nice flight because I survived long enough to land it.

Yeah, I got a feeling a new graphics card is in my near future. Looks really nice though

Graphics cards do very little in DCS, it's all about the CPU.

I was running an HD(8850?) for one screen and an HD5770 for the Abris and Shkval and the framerate was 17.
Dropped the shkval and it was back up to 30.
The GPUs weren't being taxed at all but the CPU was at its limits because that's the kind of sim DCS is.

I probably should upgrade considering I'm running an i3-3220.

Edit: Because DCS only uses 2 cores, (One for sound and one for everything else.) the biggest gains will be made from the clock speed.
Hopefully when EDGE comes out it'll utilize more cores like it should've done in the first place.
But with the improved graphics in the update you might need that new GPU.:P

Thanks for the info. In that case, I might be good unless I want them fancy visuals n stuff... which I kinda do :D

I've got an i5-4670K at 3.4GHz and the graphics card is... something my friend gave me for 60$. AMD Radeon HD 7700, or something.

Not to turn this into a PC spec thread, but what k ind of a setup is everyone else running?

And from my quick flight today... a cobra turns into a flat spin and turns into "LOL I totally meant to do that for show". I went up and did about a dozen or so of those and got into a spin nearly every time. I recovered all but one where I think I killed my pilot from G overload :S

Hehe nice. I should try flying it again soon.

My pc is like yours Greg. Pretty nice overall except the graphics card.
CPU: i7 3700k
Mobo: Asus Sabertooth Z77
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LP 2x 4GB and 2x 8GB
GPU: Asus GTX650 Ti
Corsair Force GT and Samsung 840 Pro SSD's

With EDGE, DCS will still be dual core. Instead of going to quad+ core, more workload is being passed to the GPU. They are also moving form DX9 to DX11 which should allow a modern PC to display a given level of graphics detail for less work.

I'm waiting for DCS 2.0 specs and reviews before I build a dedicated DCS PC.

The one who accidentally opened his cockpit asked for assistance with landing (well we kinda roll played the hell out of it but it was fun)

After that we went for some free for all dogfights. Me and the agressor F-15 were doing some turn battles when a MiG-21 came after us. He was full regret when we went slower than 200, he basically dropped out of the sky in his dart
