Introduction

This project aims to record a lap time on Trial Mountain for every road car available in Gran Turismo 6. This is a task I nearly completed back in the days in GT4 (but ditching very low-powered cars), and i want to do it again in GT6. By doing this, I'd like to set a benchmark for road cars that could be used to set up various online events, and also show how flawed the PP system can be (I'm not criticizing PD for that because it is impossible to come up with a perfectly satisfying system for both stock and tuned cars, but more the guys who always exploit this to their benefit in open lobbies).

I began to work on that recently, and went for the moment with the first manufacturers column for each location (Europe, Asia and America), but I might take suggestions if some of you want to see some cars compared. I could even write detailed reviews, but please note that's only up to me, if I want to, and if I have the time to write it. To keep this topic kind of clean, I would ask you to drop me a PM for suggestions, with the following title format : TTMB + cars you would like to see compared.

I'll drop an Excel file with the times and quick commentaries, and keep it updated. I'm open to suggestions about what informations I should include in this, for now, here's what I included :

- Car name
- Lap time
- Global gap (to the overall best)
- Gap with previous car (usefull to spot close cars)
- Performance Points (I don't do Power, Torque or Weight columns, because those figures can vary depending on where you read them in the game, and it is even worse in real life sometimes)
- Country
- Year
- ABS (Y means I used it, N means it was disabled for this run, Y/N means it seems the car is run in both configurations IRL)
- Transmission type (NEW)
- Body type (I wanted to write the body style, as if it is a coupe, a sedan or whatsoever, but I don't know if it is that usefull and might just swap that for the driving layout type)
- Gearbox (number of gears)
- Gears used (if during the lap, I used 2nd, 3rd and 4th, I'll write 2-4. If at some point, I have some hesitations about what gear to use or if I shift down only to have a better entry, I'll use a slash to indicate that, like 1/2-4, and if the car comes close to top speed, or hits it, I'll use a slash as well, like this : 2-4/
- Ease : now this is more down to personnal feeling on the moment, though I'll try my best to keep in mind the beginners. In this column, I rate cars on 5 stars based on how easy they are to drive on the limit, how regular you can be with, with bonus points if it has especially high cornering speeds and if they are fun. I like oversteer more than understeer, so if a car tend to have oversteer, but you can catch it easily, I won't penalise it that much. More info on that here.
- Comments : a short sentence or two about some good points or weaknesses on the car.
- A PP recalculation system / cheated car indicator. More info on how it works here.

I'll keep a simple time board with just names and times in the post below this one, as well as a summary for eventual detailed reviews. I may also add in the future a file containing all the replay files, as I always save them (and if I'd happen to forget one, I would rerun the car to have a very similar time to save). I don't have any video capture device, so this will be the only way to see my laps.

Procedure

I go buy a new car, slap comfort soft tires on it and immediately go make a 5 laps stint on Trial Mountain, with no oil change, no driving aids (except ABS if the car has it in real life and if it seems to perform well), grip reduction set on real, and I keep the best time from the run. I can allow some cars a 6th lap if I feel I made a mistake that prevented it from doing a better lap and it is only my driving to blame for that one, for a technical problem, if I have been disturbed during my run, or if I just drove a very different car and feel an adaptation lap is required. About track limits : if the game considers it good, I consider it good for this project. This means dipping wheels on the grass is allowed as long as the time doesn't turn red, running on the yellow zebra lines is allowed, smoking tires is allowed : see the run as a rally course and you'll be fine with it. Slight contacts with walls... not so sure, as it usually makes me lose time anyway, so you probably won't see that.

Why doing road cars only

- Because I think running race cars on their stock setup is not very representative, and will not do justice to some of them. Those cars are made to be set up for each event differently, and the base setup provided by GT is sometimes a bit off. I'll do tuner cars that seems to be road legal somewhere because their adjustement range is usually a lot more restricted, so the base setup doesn't make that much of a difference. Moreover, I like running road cars on GT more, but that's up to personnal tastes, and I don't only do that.

Why Trial Mountain

- It’s my favorite track from the beginning of the series, and I began to test drive cars on it since GT4. From GT5, I drive this track nearly on a daily basis : aside from particular events, I always open my lobbies on that track for a 5 – 6 lap race, it quickly became a tradition for me. I think I do a weekly 100-150 km on it online. So that means I’m definitely used to it.

- Trial Mountain has nearly everything you want to test every aspects of a road car. It features various corners of different speeds, bumps, jumps, compressions, banked corners, hills, downhill braking zones…
This track will show you a car’s ability to change direction quickly at various speeds and under various loads, how it handles weight transfers, suspension quality, pertinence of the gearbox ratio, stability and ability to turn in under braking, traction…
The only thing you can’t achieve on Trial Mountain is top speed. But you still have the back straight with the hill, and uphill sections on which power makes a difference. I believe it offers a great balance in how power and handling effects your time.

- It has a reasonable size, so the repeatability factor is pretty good here, especially for me. I’m able to take nearly every car to the same percentage of their potential in a 5 laps stint. Of course, each car being different, it would require more training to get a perfect lap out of it, but this method still puts each car on par.
Sure, some will have more room for improvement, but what is interesting is that easy cars are valued in the ranking. A car can be potentially faster on one lap, but much more twitchy, and so have no more chances to get out in front from a side to side battle, or get enough consistency on an endurance race.
Though, the differences in potential between cars won’t go huge normally : a perfect lap will generally be set at 1 or 2 seconds less than the times I have there. This is usually the margin I have after the first practice session for a “serious business” event. But on Trial Mountain, I need only those 5 laps in most cases to know the best times achievable and what to work on to do it.

- This track is there from the beginning of the Gran Turismo series, and we can safely assume it will remain in every future game from the GT franchise.

Why comfort softs

- Because it should represent the high end of performance street-legal tires in the game. Though comfort mediums seems to be closer for the kind of good tire you would have no problem riding daily or in the rain, softs are accessible even to beginners with a bit of practice, allowing virtually anyone who wants to give a try and compare their times to mines to achieve a good clean lap. Also, I don’t want to fit different tires on different cars, to give each one equal chances. And you always want to have the best tires on a sports car in real life.

Why allowing ABS on some cars, and disabling it on others

- It mainly has to deal with my way of doing things in GT : I always disable ABS on cars which doesn’t have it in real life. That concerns mainly older cars, and though ABS was already available in the 50’s on some luxury cars, I think it’s performance was not good (from a racer perspective) until the 90’s, so I’ll disable it anyway. I may still wonder for late 80’s – 90’s cars which had optional ABS, so I may do further research on those cars for real-life feedback, or simply go for the way that seems more appropriate for me.
For example, I own a Mazda MX-5 NA 1.8, which has an optional ABS : I disabled it because the system would give up after a few hard kicks on the brakes (though being a bit permissive on dry road), and I feel safer and more efficient not relying on it when the grip is reduced from rain / snow / dirt / cold. That means I’ll disable it on that car in game (though, with the wide variety provided in the game, I may try a few with ABS on).

- I only use ABS on 1, without touching the brake balance. When running no ABS, I’ll get the brake balance to 5-3, as real road cars tend to lock up front wheels first. In game, at 5-5, the front will lock up first on straights, but the rear locks up too easily and the rear will slide too much when releasing the pressure : 5-3 seems to be the right way to correct this on most cars.
Note that I can still manage pretty much the same lap times with or without ABS, especially on low-powered cars on which the difference is really minimal. On heavier / more powerful cars, the difficulty is increased and it requires more concentration, especially since I run a DFGT at the moment, but it’s just that.

- Modern cars nowadays have great ABS systems, efficient and reliable. You don’t really have any reason to disable it if there’s no racing regulations to force you to do that. The ABS on a Grande Punto Abarth for example is really great, which is impressive considering the stopping power it has compared to my MX-5. Even race cars can have ABS now : Gaëtan Paletou says you can always smash the brake pedal to the floor without worrying on the 370Z race car, to give you an idea.
In game, modern cars don’t like having their ABS disabled : even at high speeds, you can’t initiate your braking phase by getting the pedal at 100% pressure, and I don't want to adjust the brake balance independently for each car.

I'm liking this so far. Didn't know that the ASL Garaiya is able to fit between 400+ hp cars!
I know that the Mclaren F1 '94 had no ABS and TCS in real life, in case you decide to try that car.

I'll try every road cars available, so the McLaren F1 will be part of it at some point ;)

By the way, did the following cars yesterday, Excel file and time board updated accordingly.

- Art Morrison Corvette
- Buick GNX
- Buick Special "Bu'Wicked"
- Tesla Roadster
- Tesla Model S Signature Performance

Nice work...!

I note you have differences between times for the 2 Alpines and the 2 Acura Cls. Are these real differences between cars or are they driver "margin of error"? If they are an indication of margin of error then that gives us an indication of how much to +/- lap times when doing comparisons. Eg like in the elections they say margin of error +/- 3% on opinion polls.

No, that's different year models, which have different PP figures, so that's real differences (though there's not so much difference between the two Alpine A110). I just paste the name and time columns in here, so without other informations, it can be unclear to differentiate similar cars. For the complete version, download the xls file ;)

Update, following cars tested :

- Volvo 240 GLT Estate
- Volvo C30 R-Design
- Volvo S60 T-5 Sport
- McLaren F1
- McLaren MP4-12C

I like your style. Trial Mountain is my favorite fake track in the game.

I tested 99% of all the road cars on my favorite real track, Suzuka Circuit, though I used Sport Hard tires.

I have links to the replay videos for all of them and the leaderboard both in my signature. Would be interesting to compare once you're finished.

Be careful doing this though. Seems that my blu-ray laser didn't like all the testing and it needed replacing, twice.

Well that Amuse S2000 Turbo is certainly a hardcore car! That'll be hard to take down with a proper road car. The Huraya probably could I think.

Thanks !

There will definitely be some differences, what's going to be interesting is to see cars that are still way ahead or way below similarly PPed

Still running my first PS3, and I always played regularly, so I don't worry that much. And I do backup saves as well :)

Not on Comfort tires it won't. High-powered MR + Comfort tires = spin city.

Not necessarily. In fact, I find some cars to be more difficult to understand with SH tires than they are on CS. For example, I drive the BTR quite often online, and I find it to be more hazardous on SH. Though, the Amuse GT1 Turbo suspension is clearly setup for stickier tires, so on this combo, the rear tends to go wild (not traction-wise, but under loads and momentum). So I think a few cars can get in front, especially the ZZ-II.

Is that your MX-5 in your avatar? Since you have a quote from Keith Tanner in your signature, I assume it is. I have one myself :) Funny that we're both into time trials and own the same car!

The ZZII should definitely be faster than the GT1 Turbo. Are you using a wheel or the DS3? With a wheel it shouldn't matter so much what tires you use. I hope you do the ZZII next!

I was talking about the Huayra.
Oh my bad man. I just did some testing with the Huraya and I have found it harder on comfort tires than other MR cars (Ford GT, Ferrari 458 etc). But the worst is the V16T. That thing spins its wheels regardless even on race tires.

So is the Cizeta really worth getting at any point? I kind of want one just to drive a V16 car

It's definately a challange to drive, but it's really fun. You should buy one for sure. Premium intierior too.

Woah, the 12c was faster than the F1? 0_o
In real life, the F1 doesn't have ABS, which definately adds to the challange. It would be faster if the ABS was on.

Yeah, I recall we gave that thing the most difficult car title in GT5. I don't really expect it to be much easier now in GT6.

The difference is less than a tenth of a second, so I would say they're on par. But the MP4-12C is definitely more handy, while the F1 would take the cake on a track with more straights. I have to say this result confirms what I was expecting. I think I even saw a similar conclusion to a real-life comparison, but I can't find that back for now.

Actually, the F1 takes quite well the no-ABS thing in GT6. Though it would be a bit more regular with ABS turned on, I'm not sure I would have done a better lap with ABS on the F1.

By the way...

New cars tested :

Tommykaira ZZ-II
Tommykaira ZZ-S
Mine's Skyline GT-R N1 Base '06
Mine's Skyline GT-R V-Spec N1 Base '00
Mine's Lancer Evolution VI
Volkswagen Sambabus Typ 2 (T1)
Volkswagen Schwimmwagen Typ 166

I have to say I'm a bit surprised the ZZ-II isn't much more in front of the Amuse. On stickier tires, I clearly see the Amuse in front, but the ZZ-II may have a bit more potential on comforts.

I'm very surprised with the ZZ-II. It's 4WD, and 120kg lighter than the Amuse, I thought I would be at least a second faster. Guess that proves that the Amuse is pretty fast then.

The Amuse has also more power and downforce, as well as a 7-speed sequential gearbox. And 4wd doesn't mean a car will be faster : in fact, on dry / good grip conditions, a 4wd will be slower than a rwd, because the power eaten by the transmission is more important, and it usually brings some entry understeer in the equation. The only advantage of 4wd is traction, and the ZZ-II maxes it out. (Though modern systems like the ATTESA are another thing).

Of course, when it comes down to rain, dirt or snow, that point usually overweights the rest, so 4wd are more versatile.

Thanks for the ride sir, but finally, I think I won't buy that one.

New update, with :

Mitsubishi HSR-II
And ALL factory Lanevos (guess I'll have to tackle the Impreza list soon)

Quick note on them :
I didn't really knew if I should drive the older ones with or without ABS. So, Evo 1, 2, 3 and 5 GSR were driven 3 laps with ABS and 3 laps without it (only the Evo 5 made its best lap with ABS on). I didn't do that on the 4, because IRL, even the RS version has it. Every generation after 5th were then driven with ABS on, except the RS versions if they don't have ABS IRL.

Also, I just ran one Evo 6 TME GSR (the version with side stripes being identical exept for a decal), so in case the precision is usefull, the run counts for both. I'll do the same thing with the japanese cars that have one model name for each location, with the little (J) to show it's just a badge change on the japanese spec (like the Eunos Roadster J-Limited, and the MX-5 and Miata versions that don't exist IRL because the J-Limited was only sold on Japanese market, or the S2000 EU (J), S2000 US (J)... you know what I mean  ).

Finally an update this week (have to prepare for a serious race next saturday). So, cars tested :

All GC8 Impreza versions (up to STI 6).

Upitty upitty upitty update

Done the 2nd and 3rd gen Impreza, which means I'm finished with them. It's funny how for the same lap times, they have generally 20 PP less than the equivalent Evo though...

Also, I'm probably going to change the rating system. When I'm going through the list and compare different cars and how I rated them, I find some differences inaccurate and I'm not satisfied with that. I'll tell you when that thing is changed.

And don't hesitate to tell me if there's a car you wish to see in the list in the near future, as I don't really now what I'll do next for now (but please, PM that stuff)
