Gran Turismo Movie Confirmed by Sony Representative

gran-turismo-the-movie

Since it was leaked last week, news of the Gran Turismo feature film has spread far and wide among the video game, automotive, and entertainment industries, but the project hadn’t yet been publicly confirmed by anyone associated with Sony.

That changed last Thursday, when a Sony representative from the UK confirmed to AOL’s gaming website, Joystiq, that the movie is “being made”.

The movie, however, is likely quite a ways off. The two producers involved, Mike De Luca and David Brunetti, have only just started work on their current high-profile project, the movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, which has just received a confirmed release date of August 1, 2014.

Assuming production on Fifty Shades takes up most of their time through that date, it would be unlikely to see Gran Turismo hit the big screen until 2015 – a potential date which could tie in nicely with the series’ debut on the PlayStation 4 console.

Have you guys clicked on the link (the movie is “being made”)? It seems Clint Eastwood will be in the movie. :O

  2. infamousphil

A “Speed Racer” series revisited, covering 125 years of the automobile. Let the cars be the stars ;)

  3. MasterSquidP4

    Gran Turismo: Full Throttle

Starring Vin Diesel, Mark Wahlberg, Justin Timberlake, Mackelmore, Megan Fox,

and Ken Jeong as Kazunori Yamauchi

    1. MasterSquidP4

The film will follow protagonist Xx-JDM-tUnEr92-xX (Vin Diesel), a racer and respected member of the Underground Hacking League as he fights with antagonist Kazunori Yamauchi (Ken Jeong) to escape the Polyphony police force and avoid bannishment from the cold-blooded streets of Skylandia.

    2. ajrichar

I know you guys are joking, but if Vin Diesel appears we can kiss goodbye any hope that a GT movie is a serious film about cars. We’ll be treated to tight t-shirts, muscles and acting more wooden than a pine plantation. Oh, and a 14 speed gearbox….

  4. Danny280zxturbo

I hope I can be in this movie because I think I will look good on it!!lol! also due to my experience since part 1! PD, you are welcome to hire me on this movie?

  5. ajrichar

I hope the movie is not American-ised. All this talk of American small screen actors distresses me. It may be the single largest market but GT is about cars and driving and it has a global focus. It’s not the ‘Real Racing Simulator’ but the ‘Real Driving Simulator.’ the cars have to be the stars. I’d hope there’d be a bit of the Best Motoring battles in there, because that concept informs a lot of Gran Turismo’s approach – driving a select bunch of road cars hard around a track.

If love to see the movie visit the real world tracks that have appeared in the GT franchise. If shot beautifully – like Top Gear have been able to do from time to time – the tracks and cars can be at the forefront. I’m worried about the modification angle in any film like this. The Fast and the Furious franchise are a laughing stock for any real ‘car fans’. It’s the sort of intertainment where you leave your brain at the door. GT has always tried the realism angle without the undercar neon lights, muscly actors in undersized mesh shirts and girls in bikinis. Leave that crap out of it.

Real ‘car people’ need to be involved. I have high hopes for this movie. It could be the sort of car film we’ve been waiting for. Driven (or Drivel, as I prefer) didn’t cut it, neither did the Fast and Furious rubbish. There’s no need to hype the action or speed it up – driving and racing captured well is excitement enough.

    1. BkS

I can’t agree more with you. I hope it stays true to the GT bloodline. It would be sad to see it Americanized.

Someone give this man a cookie!

  6. Normalaatsra

I hope it takes place in Italy, where the term “Gran Turismo” is coined. Or perhaps Europe-centric.

  7. uhruhtowel

I think you all have high expectations. It could be somthing like “Driven” where it has a story but when you get to see cars racing, it was C.G. or its going to be movie worthy of the Discovery Channel documentarys.

  8. DriftShiro

I dont think the GranTurismo series can make up to a Movie…atleast a good one. But who knows, maybe it end ups being something we enjoy. Lets have hope.

  9. Ittybitty Stigy

How can you say it’s going to be stupid before you even see it or know what it’s going to be about?

  10. panjandrum

Well, of they get some people with taste and a real knowledge and respect of cars and racing history we could potentially end up with something good. Personally, however, I’m inclined to believe this will be an embarrassment / disaster.

Maybe they mean that they are making a movie about the GT Academy, a documentary that will appeal to a specific limited audience but which could legitimately be interesting.

  11. robulus

A Gran Turismo Movie. From the Director of 50 Shades of Grey.

    I’ve got a bad feeling about this….

    1. NA

Could be worse. Could have been from the writer of “50 shades”, and the director of “The Garbage Pail Kids Movie”…XD

  12. marktyper

Silly people talking right away without even thinking about what the movie could be composed off. GEEZ! Ofcourse GT Academy graduates will be a part of this! Just like us public who tried and will always try to compete in GT Academy.

  13. mansurest7

    Gran Turismo the Movie
    Real Driver Experience.

And other car movies is silly dumb **s.

Wtf fast n furious.. Omg.. Is not movie… Open your eyes guys..

    I’m sorry…

  14. kollosson

This is a really silly idea, how will the movie tie into the game, apart from the name it will feature cars, Its greedy execs looking at a way of tapping into the fan base of GT, its as stupid as the once mooted GTA game. GT is a driving simulator how can that be a movie, no main characters just lots of cars….its a bit silly

    1. ScotteDawg

@mr_pepps – That’s like saying “How can GT6 be anything but arse gravy” before it’s even out! Assumptions can’t be made until, at the very least, a trailer of the movie is released!!

If they get good writers and good actors, they should be able to pull this off quite well…

It all comes down to imagination on their part and optimism on our part!

  15. TriumphTT900

Movie stars jay leno, s. vettel, and jeff gordon. Basically them just ripping around the nurb in hacked daihatsu midgets. Antagonists will be a group of 9 to 14 year old boys drifting silvias and 370z’s. Lots of raging. God I love GT. For real though.

  16. kekke2000

In the beginning of the movie he stands by a checkin desk to get the B License.

    – I’m here for the B License…
    – First you need to buy a car.
    – So I will use my own car to get the license?
    – No, you can have the car safetly parked in your garage.
    – … ?
    – Come back when you have a car.

(comes back in a Daihatsu Midget)

    – I got a car (laugh)…
    – Ok! We are ready to go!
    – … really?!

    1. DSUjoeDirte9

honestly that could be a possible plot. A new driver with not a lot of money starting off with some cheap used car he just bought and then racing through his life to get into the F1 or Lemans series. or something like that.

Just like an actual GT game

  17. zanxion

It will be like terrorists riding an old mercedes shooting around innocent people, then Arnold pops out of nowhere in a X2012 with a gator gun on it, kills them all, shoots down a UFO, saves the holly cow and the planet, gets all girls and a new mint X2012 for his collection.

    Yeah!

  18. cazamarama

I hope they find ways of incorporating the actual game in it, versus just using the brand name. This would be neat:

There are 1 or 2 characters that are “street racers” and they are recruited to do track racing. They have to learn all the strategies of track racing (drafting, out-in-out on the corners, etc). This would represent the “licensing” in the game. It would be fun to have some of the races in the movie be the same “cup” races in the games. And also include the a couple of tracks original to the games such as Deep Forest.

  19. tpark103

Shame there won’t be any Porsches getting there day on the big screen not as if they need the free advertising. I’m sure they’ll be wondering why they locked themselves into a deal where they couldn’t deversify there product.

  20. Autofreak4986

I don’t know what I’m going to do if James Lafferty or Chris Carmack gets cast as the leading role in this movie (IF the movie contains fistfights between other drivers). The teen drama TV shows they were on contained fistfights in some seasons. Out of the two, If they want to cast someone who raced a car, it should be Lafferty, as Nathan actually drove a racecar at the Charlotte Motor Speedway and crashed it, injuring himself in the 19th episode of season 2 of One Tree Hill, “I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning”. OR, cast him as the main villain who makes everything harder for the hero (he CAN play someone arrogant, assured, unfriendly, AND super-competitive, like OTH seasons 1-2). If not, cast a young actor who’s into cars.

(For those who don’t know who they are, James Lafferty was on One Tree Hill; Chris Carmack was on The O.C., the former ended last year; the latter in 2007.)

It would also be nice if Jay Leno did the narration like he did in Gran Turismo PSP.

I just hope the production staff working on the movie doesn’t screw this up…

(Oh, and I wouldn’t mind a female lead, either.)

    1. ScotteDawg

How about Jason Statham and Vin Diesel in the lead, Stana Katic and Michelle Rodriguez as the girlfriends/love interests, Dominic Purcell as the bad guy, Simon Pegg as the cop (also best friend of Statham), Robert de Niro as the chief of police, Gary Oldman as the newspaper chief, Sung Kang as a competition driver & The Stig as B-spec Bob!

  21. Monatsende

Gran Turismo Movie? Sounds like: The Fast and the Furious – The Realistic Street Race Movie Simulation.

I`d like to see Schwarzenegger or Clint Eastwood (as the Old Racing Hero) racing against Mark Wahlberg (as The Ambitious New Guy and because the movie needs a very bad actor). After being crashed by a dumbass 17 years old rookie they let their guns speak. Then, Bumblebee appears with his Transformers buddies to save the world and stuff…
Maybe we should also see Will Smith (smartass driver for the funny part), Tom Cruise (the ambitious driver with spy-ish background), Tom Hanks (as The Weird Mechanic) and Morgan Freeman (as retired, wise man).

    Anyone?

    1. Willthethrill_H

Hell yes. You got me with Morgan Freeman. Anything with him is guaranteed to be a success.

  22. bretlei

Why and how xD really. Just how? What will it be? BSpec Bob driving into walls because the other drivers seem like they are retarded? It will be prettt funny. Im gonna keep an eye out for this film.

  23. Amac500

I don’t know how to think about this. I really won’t know if I love it or hate it until I learn more about the making of it and the plot. The trick is going to be finding a way to make this around one centeral figure who can represent all the forms of racing represented in Gran Turismo, without making it some hocky driver’s championship where they are competing around the globe in different cars already used in racing series and crap. Iftht happened there would naturally be a strong villain characterized or it would become too focused on Grab Turismo as a game, rather then focusing on what it stands for along with the realism of little details featured in the game. If this is a big budget racing film like Le Mans and the upcoming film Rush, this could be exciting, but we will be walking a fine line between quality filmography and being hocky.

I guess that what I’m saying is that I don’t want this to be a Who Framed Roger Rabbit for cars, where we’d get Gran Turismo crossing between the video game world and the real world. If that doesn’t happen, this will be a really cool thing.

    1. Amac500

Oh and the movie better not be too true to Gran Turismo, one can’t sit through a movie that’s 90% Nissan’s!

    2. ScotteDawg

With todays CGI capabilities, it would be nothing like Who Framed Roger Rabbit but more like Gran Tronismo! lol

  24. Laserbeak43

How do you know it would be a bad film?? I’d be happy to see it, as long as it wasn’t some corny Fast and Furious garbage.

  25. jajr18m

i love gran turismo, been there from day 1, but… i have a really bad feeling its going to be the biggest joke since lil wayne

    1. ImmalovemaGTR

back in 2004, lil wayne actually was a quite good rapper… youtube go dj or google shyne on from birdman

    2. jajr18m

yep hes a very lazy rapper, he hardly bothers to rhyme, he says his lines slower that cleavland off family guy, and he sounds like a cat being strangled:L

  26. Hawker4

It’s going to be like tron meets war games meets gt academy! Lol. Jk Seriously though…how are you going to make a movie based on a sim game???? This has kind of peeked my interest…not because I’m a GT fanboy, even though I probably fall under that category a little bit, but rather because it makes me curious how they are going to pull it off. Interesting concept all though I find it a hair odd.

    1. ScotteDawg

In this day and age, shouldn’t be too hard to come up with an idea… It just has to be a “GOOD” idea!

      *piqued*
      *although*

    2. KFM

ScotteDawg, heartfelt thanks from the grammar Nazi inside of me.

Hawker4, it’s most likely going to be the movie version of B-spec mode. “Pace up!” “Overtake!” “Okay, maintain pace!” “Seriously, my grandmother takes corners faster than that!”

  27. JDmsz

Wouldn’t hold my breath. Like the Jordan said, “it’s unlikely to see Gran Turismo hit the big screen until 2015.

    1. iseeu1001

Ace Are you stupid or something. They said it will be released around the holiday most likely meaning christmas. I hate idiots like you that don’t pay attention.

    2. NA

So, since your in the know, “around the holiday” falls on what day exactly?

Surely , since you’re the genius that has been paying so much attention, you must have the actual date that Ace referring to. You know, like “December 10th”, or “November 26th”……(in the US, the holiday season is actually considered to run from late November to early January, so you have plenty of days to choose from for a US release date.)

Or are we just too busy demonstrating our superior intellect to worry about little things like the difference between an “expected launch window”, and a “confirmed release date”.

    3. acedition333

I know it’s around the holidays…. a date would be good. You got other games with release dates with 6 months in advance. So to answer your question, “iseeu1001” I’m not stupid or something. Jackass!

    4. iseeu1001

To you idiots that replied me I said most likely!!!! MOST LIKELY can you read, that doesn’t refer to me as knowing. Christmas is a holiday so is thanksgiving there are only 2 holidays coming up.

    5. ScotteDawg

I believe that GT5 was released on Nov. 24th, 2010 so, in some respects, it stands to reason that GT6 will be out around the same time!
In 2010, Nov. 24th was a Wednesday, so I’m guessing that the release of GT6 will ALSO be on a Wednesday! The closest to that 2010 day/date would be Wednesday, Nov. 27th.
      This is only a guess…

@iseeu1001 – Read the GTPlanet UAP again and take special note of point 3!

    6. NA

Yes, I can read. Should be pretty obvious that everyone here can read, but I guess when people get too busy flinging random insults around, certain things like the obvious might get overlooked.

Apparently it takes quite a bit of brain power to sit at a computer, repeatedly calling people “idiots”, and the overall quality of the trolling seems to suffer has a result, unfortunately. But then again, quality most certainly often suffers in today’s age of high tech automation and high speed mass production, so it doesn’t surprise me one bit really.

However, on a more positive note, it’s the ability to read that allows me to follow this conversation, long enough to see the irony taking place, when someone would call someone else an idiot for not knowing the release date, but then follow it up by admitting that they don’t know the date themselves. For that little chuckle, I thank you.

Now then, are we going to come up with fresh material in the near future, or can I just assume that the rest of this discussion will be just more of this same tired old trolling routine? I like to give my time to reading the truly masterful efforts, and so far, this one is just not looking to be worth the further reading.

  28. opelgt1969

I just hope they don’t have “hacked Cars” in the movie and hopefully not look like they came from NFS/Fast and Furious.

  29. infamousphil

This could wind up being a decent film. Not an Oscar winner, but an informative one, …historically. I just don’t want Sony to not take it seriously and jack up the cost to play GT to make up for a financial lost.

Personally, I would like to see it done completely in CGI (PD?), featuring Nissan’s various championship winning years and attempts against it’s rivals on the streets and tracks around the world.

  30. blackjack

I heard that it’s going to be called “GTR’s of the Caribbean” and will feature Johnny Depp as the main character. Directed by Tim Burton and to co-star Helena Bonham Carter. Also there is a rumour that Morgan Freeman is going to appear as a “wise elder” who will give intellectual guidance to Johnny Depps character through narration.

Seriously though, making a movie out of a true interactive experience is going backwards imo.

    1. infamousphil

Helena Bonham Carter!??? From what part of your brain does she drive ANY kind of high performance car? She is a cutie, but too old to be anything more than Johnny Depp’s financially distressed widower.

I believe it was Jean Reno that did the GT2 commercial. “…heart of a winner.”

  31. David_Bohm

It’s wise to be cynical folks. All this is, is Sony taking a successful “Intellectual Property” it already owns and squeezing more cash out of it. No doubt Kaz, was just recently informed, has no involvement, and doesn’t care. It will have as much to do with the experience we have playing the game as the movie BATTLESHIP did with the board game.

I highly doubt either producer mentioned has yet to even see GT5 or GT6. Nor will they ever need to, in order to make the movie they will make.

The only thing I’m confident is the movie will feature cars. Maybe it will be good and maybe not.

  32. p64gig

Josh Weaten would alsome. And good script writer. A story like a beginner racer pregisely thrown local racing club that races battle nationally. A friend give new game call gt 6 and through it me new friends and form racing club that go pro. And Cam from Gt Academy and the Master and Nurburg at the last scene

  33. varmintx

If they made it like a spiritual successor to Le Mans, it could have been pretty good, but a Fast and Furious ripoff reeks of a cheap, soulless cash-in.

  34. BMfan

Instead of doing a stupid movie about a simulation racer, why not do a God of War or Uncharted instead.Hell, even GTA IV would make a better movie.

  35. Esgaloth

Are Standard Cars Bad Guys? Good guy has to stop them from using engine swaps and illegal parts lol

  36. Mike240SX

So I guess I’m the only one thinking this might be a documentary about automotive history, or racing, instead of assuming the worst and predicting a Fast and Furious style deal?

    1. MeanElf

It could be lots of things – I suppose the Facebook thing they did might lead to that direction but there are many other possibilities that they can do. Personally I favour a driver’s progression from the Sunday Cup to the 24hr of le Mans. It’d be great if the GT original tracks were also used.

    2. ScotteDawg

CGI these days can recreate almost anything! The original tracks could be done!

In an earlier article it was said that this movie was going to be an action movie, so I don’t see it being a doco!

  37. Deko Wolf-GTPT

For the sake of learning a lesson, I hope this movie deal flops so hard that they will never touch the subject again.
On the other hand, it will only be good if it stays true to the game series, which, forgive me, has no material for a movie.

  38. tpark103

Will the evolution of human interaction into the series have something to do with the movie? Will GT6 introduce things we haven’t imagined yet that may help this make since? For now as always we are guessing. Guessing about GT6 now guessing about this movie as well.

  39. Madertus

I think I know what would be anice title for this movie.

“Gran Turismo – Skyline’s the Limit”

  40. Nuuj

I’m sure the movie will tie into the story/stories of our GT Academy Winners and Participants, some of whom have interesting back stories..

It will either be that, or an adaptation of the story we all (as GT Players) know well–a Character who starts off with just enough cash to buy something raceable, who has to claw their way to the Top through various Cups, Championships, etc..

Either way I’m sure they’ll spice it up some by adding a little Drama, a token Bad Guy/Team, and a personal story and struggle, it won’t be ALL driving (and hopefully no License Tests lol)..

  41. 2012GT325

Never thought I’d see “Fifty Shades of Grey” appear on a GT Planet article. How did we get here?????

Oh, I remember. We got here because Sony thinks a racing game (without any human characters, story, etc) would make a great movie. As a GT fan, I want them to have all the publicity they can get, but I also want them to give the fans all they want (in the game) before venturing into movie-making.

    1. kekke2000

I can’t think of anything that would make this into a good movie. I sure will watch it though…

    2. TomBrady

You have no idea where they’re going to go with it though. Don’t knock it until you at least here the premise, then feel free.

It could be a really interesting documentary type film.

    3. sind3ntosca

everything is possible guys :) …remember in the past days, man on the moon is just ridiculous idea… absurd… cannot be happen :p …let’s just pray the movie will be awesome :)

    1. Eggstor

50 shades of Z. There’s far too many GT-Rs to limit it to 50, and the Miata is not a Nissan product.

  42. GTP_ADE

I think I got 50 shades of grey in my paint items, and 50 shades of every other colour under the sun.

  43. Praggia

“it would be unlikely to see Gran Turismo hit the big screen until 2015 – a date which could tie in nicely with the series’ debut on the PlayStation 4 console.”

I fkn hope not 2015???!!!!! are you serious?

    FACEPALM!!!!!!

    1. HuskyGT

Why not? that’s less than two years away. Honestly I don’t think a PS4 GT title will be done until later that time or early 2016.

    2. MeanElf

What, you wanted it on release of the PS4? A few months after GT6 – is your head on straight?

      Facepalm right back at ya…

    3. TomBrady

Are you serious? if anything that’s really optimistic. I’m not expecting GT7 for another 3 years at the very least and that’s only if they can get more people to help make the game than 150 people. Forza releases crap every 2 years because they have 400 workers. Imagine if GT had 400 workers?

    1. GTHEAD87

It does. I would love to see spots of dirt and bugs on the car after a good long drive or when going off the road onto the grass, especially when raining.
