GT5 Bundled with PlayStation 3D Display in Europe, Enables “SimulView” Gameplay

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNXxZCnrYhk

Looking to drive sales of their new “PlayStation 3D Display” in Europe, Sony is bundling the Platinum edition of Gran Turismo 5 (and Killzone 3) with the monitor in the UK and Europe.

Their strategy appears to be working, with initial shipments of the bundle having reportedly sold out at most UK retailers. The display first became available in North America last fall, where it was (and continues to be) bundled with a copy of Motorstorm: Apocalypse.

The most notable feature of the 24” monitor is its patented “SimulView” technology, which GT5 became fully compatible with in the Spec II update.

As you can see in the video above, SimulView allows two players (wearing 3D glasses) to look at the screen at the same time, with each person seeing a unique and completely different image. This is, obviously, quite a revolutionary feature for anyone who’s tried to race with a friend while squinting at a split-screen.

The PlayStation 3D Display is currently available for $299.99 at Amazon in the United States, £409.99 at Amazon in the UK, and can be found at other European retailers for €499.

We can forget about this I mean seriously the DLC is what i’m interested in like tracks, suits, whatever, it keeps it fresh for me, but seriously all these nissan’s and honda’s that are from seprate years are crazy, we need more euro power, more american power, give me a Jeep, a Jensen, SOMETHING that keeps me on GT5(besides seasonals and finding cars i’ve missed) TO KEEP THE FLOW OF PS3 ALIVE AND NOT SITTING THERE COLLECTING DUST WHILE I PLAY FORZA(still need unicorn for achieve) AND HALO TO PASS MY TIME TILL I HEAR DLC OR NEXT GAME!!!

  2. ironman44321

Alright…I don’t mean to complain and I love the game…but I was just on Forzaplanet, (even though I don’t really enjoy Forza)

Why do they get so many damn car packs? I wish we got a bunch of car packs…I also wouldn’t mind ones with less japanese cars…But! Forza blows and they compain about tracks on Forzaplanet hahaha

    1. HKSBro92

yeah but thats the only thing they complain about…the tracks. Look at the all stuff people on GTplanet complain about. Most of the complaints are just dumb.

    2. Quakebass

The reason is because Turn 10 has a greater workforce working on Forza 4 than Pd’s got working on GT5. I don’t know how many PD’s got divided between GT5 and 6 (which is already under development, in case you didn’t already know), but I do know that there’s about 140 at PD, and Turn 10 has around 400 divided between three games; Forza 4, Forza: Horizon, and Forza 5. That equates to nearly ALL of PD’s workforce on each game.

    3. Swagger897

ironman, did you happen to read that a forza player said ” Ya, too bad that austin healey looks to good. we only get 6-7 frames as is, and with that, i might just switch to GT with PD…”
Ya, i know, WHAT A FAIL!!! 6 to seven frames?? What? thats even worse than 12 year olds on COD (BF3 is where its at)!! This is hilarious. Since the all want tracks, that means that they realy aren’t appreciating the detail in them. Unlike people in GT, we still go back to the begining tacks that came with the game, AND WE STILL GET BETTER PICS.

someone else said ” FINALLY! a truck that we can actually drive” i though, why would he say A truck that we can ACTUALLY drive? then i realized, GT HAS TWICE AS MANY CARS!!!. sure some of there autovistas might beat us in the polly count, but pretty much every other car is the same compared to GT.

      anyone else feel to elaborate?

    4. ironman44321

Then they need to hire more people…GT outsells Forza by a mile…why don’t they have more people?

    5. MyFavoriteGame

The biggest complain I had about Forza 3 was the drift smoke…which I’m pretty sure didn’t get fixed in Forza 4.

I don’t believe a true GT fan can just “switch” to Forza and honestly claim to enjoy it. For everything it does better, it does 10 things worst. I’m not biased, my Gamertag is ” RollerMasses” and I have all 1000GS on Forza 3.

    6. Quakebass

      @Swagger:
People want tracks in new Forza because they’ve already got a MASSIVE amount of appealing cars in the game and as DLC. They want more variety. WE’VE gotten 3 tracks as DLC, and we get DLC half as often and started receiving WAY after Forza started receiving their DLC. To be honest, it doesn’t matter that GT5 has more cars than Forza, what matters is what cars you GET. GT5 has around 150 – 200 unnecessary duplicate cars, bringing our car count down to 850 – 800. Forza has a wider range of important and great cars than GT5. Sure, we’ve got plenty, but honestly, the selection isn’t nearly as good as Forza’s. And we’ve got over 800 cars that have TERRIBLE resolution, and many of them are those unnecessary duplicate cars, and ALL of Forza’s have a high polygon count.

      @ironman:
I’m not sure why they don’t hire more people, but I think they should, basing on their competition.

      @MyFavoriteGame:
I agree, Forza doesn’t NEARLY have enough smoke.

    7. ironman44321

I am a huge GT fan and have never enjoyed the Forza games but Quakebass is partly right, They have alot of cars I would love to have in GT5…

It almost seems wasteful to have such good cars in such a bad game…

    8. ironman44321

Ummm…yeah…sure, it’s a bad…well wait. It’s not really a bad game. It has some cool features and I like alot of the cars it has but I just find the driving itself to be sub par.

    1. ps3finest

I can’t smell money because my nose is blocked up :) I can hear the rustle o’ cash though in Europe…and I live in the western part of the United States. It must be nearly deafening just half way through the Atlantic. :)

  3. N99GT

remember seeing this on the gadget show! but £409 for 24″ really isnt worth!
    dam taxes are killing everything

  4. bowen747

£409 in the uk are you having a laugh ? when it costs $299 in the usa , that works out to roughly £185 , so why are we being charged an extra £224 in the uk ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, sony taking the piss again

    1. another_jakhole

      Foxiol says:
“We are being stolen in Europe. Companies pay high taxes for their products and then when we are going to buy those products we have to pay the difference + the benefits of each store.
At least the air is still free… (touching some wood now)
If the price drops to the US price i´ll buy it but a 24 inches TV for 500 it´s quite expensive. And also i am used to 47″ inches TV´s in my house and not having the intention to go for smaller TV´s. Make it bigger then we talk.”
It’s definitely a rip-off to people outside of the US.

  5. DriveTheGuard88

I pre-ordered the PlayStation 3D Display last october. Its a great display, my PS3 looks awesome with it! I would so reccomend this to anyone! My only complaint is that the price dropped $200 like a month after it came out… I paid $500 lol

  6. Moglet

I’m off to the States in October, reckon they’ll let me bring one back through customs to sell on at a huge profit? XD

  7. Escort mk1 yum

This may sound stupid but, is there a way of keeping my roof down on a cab, bugs the hell out of me, I want to get some sun on my lid, someone help please, pretty pretty please

    1. another_jakhole

IF you mean a convertible by “cab”, then it isn’t possible. You can make the Ferrari California’s top go UP if you add a spoiler.

    2. Escort mk1 yum

I don’t use the forums, massive thanks jakhole, it’s a shame that, as when your in incar view, and you got the top down, it look ace, looks like I’ll stick to my California.

    3. another_jakhole

I agree. The California’s the only car the I’d prefer it with the top up though lol. Miata, Cappucino, those Daihatsu’s, anything else I would prefer with the top down.

  8. ch3ng

The Screen is to expensive and the current console can’t handle 3D well.
The Screen has no Good function except “Simuview”.
The Screen is to Little for Good 3D
    It isn’t a TV.
Good 3D TV costs less and are far better.

    1. Normalaatsra

In fact it’s for people who live in small places that want to have a 3D TV.
You can obviously get something better than that. I saw it myself, it is as tall as my torso.

    1. Foxiol

Explained it again: Simultview is like having 2 different screens at the same time in one screen. You need 2 3D glasses for each screen. In one screen using one of those glasses you can see the player 1 with his own point of view and image and with the other you can see player 2.

So no more split screen for playing with a friend in your house for example.

It applies only in this TV which is 3D and Simultview capable but the function doesn´t work on other 3D TV´s without this function.

The video shows that…the guy uses one of the glasses and you see the player 1 and then he changes for the other and you can see the player 2 point of view and image.

IF you are not using glasses you can only see both images mixed as you can also see in the video.

  9. biftizmo

This is a great piece of kit..would like to see a larger screen version…and it would be more justifiable to the girlfriend if she could watch master chief and i could ps3..plus it would aid to a smoother relationship….there missing a trick here..get on it Sony sort it out! before i kick her out..!

  10. Toyota2jz

“$299.99 at Amazon in the United States” “£409.99 at Amazon in the UK” – That bothers me… Alot!

    1. another_jakhole

      Foxiol says:

  11. MJGAIR

3D is so over rated, was poor in the 80’s, was poor in the 90’s and although its improved, its still poor now.
Plus £410 for basically a 24″ monitor, talk about daylight robbery, can get the games cheap, ive just got a 47″ full hd LG tv for less than £500 ,i’d advise ppl to shop about, can get a much better deal else where.

    1. another_jakhole

“Literally” everybody agrees that GT5 in 3D looks amazing. I haven’t seen one person say it looked bad in the 18 months that GT5’s been out.

    2. mobiletone

@ another_jakhole – GT5 in 3D is a mess when using in-car full dash view. have you actually played it in this mode?? i found i had to give up and just use the ‘roof’ cam view with the analogue dials on screen. my external 2D to 3D converter does a better job than the inbuilt 3D software as far as GT5 is concerned.

ps: Saints Row TT looks pretty sweet converted to 3D

    3. Maddens Raiders

Hmm.. GT5 3D on my LEDXBR Bravia is very nice. I can’t help but totally disagree w/ just about everything you said. GT5 was built for 3D as was KILLZONE 3 and they both look ridiculously good. It’s really hard for me to believe that multiplat rubbish like Saints Row looks better than first party titles engineered to run their stellar best on Sony sets.

    4. mobiletone

@ Maddens Raiders – how do you drive in 3D in GT5 (what views?), i found i could either have nice in-car 3D dash and ghosted to crap track, or nice track and knackered dash view. some tracks are worse than others Nurburgring being a prime example of duel trackside lines appearing, it’s like driving drunk!! I found the best 3D effect was from using bonnet/roof cam.

some games look better converted to 3D, Saints Row looks great were-as Skyrim looks like total arse.

  12. mobiletone

But how can i justify this to the missus, was bad enough convincing her to let me get the Sony Bravia with built in PS2.

    1. another_jakhole

Yeah. Apparently, if you don’t live in the US the price is way more expensive in other countries.

  13. Rumface

Which poor sod is going to buy a 24″ monitor for over £400! That’s total trollop if it’s $299 on Amazon, that’s so much cheaper.

I guess us UK residents just get ripped off with these type of things.

    1. jah24car

Rumface cause pounds is considerbly higher to us States people(americans) because some looks cheap but here its higher, amazon sells things cheaper thats why! cause i went to the RBR site to see how much a Vettel hat cost 29.95 british pounds THATS 45 BUCKS USA MONEY!!!

  14. Lambofanghini

I love playing GT5 in 3D. Thankfully sets went down drastically last holiday season or I would’ve bought this Sony 32″ set.

  15. HuskyGT

This is actually very useful! Too bad developers don’t focus anymore in two player games like they did before. This would be awesome with RE5 or other co-op games. GT5… not too much…

    1. Quakebass

Yeah, I miss the split-screen component in many games… The developers should realize that people have friends that actually like to SEE each other. I find it much more fun to be playing games at at a friends house than just across the air waves.

  16. TomBrady

If only they would make a 32 inch model. I don’t have the best eyesight and 32 inch is really the smallest I recommend going if you have a wheel.

The optimum viewing position from an HDTV is 3 times the height of the screen, on a 32 inch that’s about 45 inches, and that’s roughly where you would be sitting if you had a wheel as close as possible.

I had a 24 inch TV, it was good just too small. I returned it a couple weeks later for my 32 inch, I am so glad I did. Vizio is awesome for the price.

    1. another_jakhole

Same here. 32 inch tv or higher. I can’t really make do with anything smaller for GT5 + a steering wheel.

    2. TomBrady

Agreed. You know what I mean. Even a short person has to sit a minimum distance from the TV to have room for the pedals (unless your pedals are under the TV) so 32inch is really the optimum size. Of course this TV wasn’t made just for people with wheels but I think 4 feet is about as close as most people want to sit to a TV, and in that case, 24inch is too small.

    1. TomBrady

I don’t think that’s how it works. And your girlfriend watches soap opera’s? Is she like 50? You gone cougar huntin? LMFAO I’m just playin bro, don’t get mad

  17. grazbro

It’s official, PD is grasping at straws, no more updates for GT5. This TV was out 6 months ago with MotorStorm. :(

  18. BrLaOiOnD

I got this monitor around 3 months ago. The picture is really great. It has a smoothness to the image, like the pixels are packed tighter. I think they’re using a different LCD technology than the usual TFT(?).
I would recommend to anyone that is thinking of 3D or simul view. After using for some time I did notice that the 3D is best after using 3D for 1.5 hours… it’s like the monitor has gotta warm up so the electronics switch states quicker. Because crosstalk when using 3D mode or simule view isn’t the best. It is actually quite bad for the first few minutes. I usually turn the GT5 on and the glasses on then come back after awhile. I recommend to anyone.

  19. montecarlo87

Dude that made the video needs to get his finger out of the way and turn the light off behind him. But that would make racing friends so much more fun. That side by side stuff has always made things hard because of the confusion from watching your friends car instead of yours.

  20. crcn11

I never even knew this was being sold in Europe… too much money though compared to the North American counterpart. Someone give me a job please and I’ll give you the copy of GT5 for free!
Seriously looking for a job though….

  21. spikeyhairdude

Might get this. Im dont have a hd or widescreen tv yet.
Still using a tv from 1999. Even got a sticker on th back to say when it was serviced.

    1. Quakebass

I’ve got to say, the “zoom” feature in GT5 is one of the most important to me… There’s some other games out there that DESPERATELY need it.

    1. another_jakhole

      Quakebass says:
      “Yeah, are the prices backwards? $300 = about £186, £410 = about $660, and €500 = about $655 – $660… I’m glad I’m in the US…”

    2. Foxiol

We are being stolen in Europe. Companies pay high taxes for their products and then when we are going to buy those products we have to pay the difference + the benefits of each store.

At least the air is still free… (touching some wood now)

  22. Quakebass

I saw this a an electronics store recently, and it got me thinking up some cool ideas for future game systems; having having two disk drives on a system, so two people could both use the same system, but play separate games and do separate things; this would be ideal for a family with siblings. The only issue would be the system having to divide the power between the two different people… and having 2-4-player split screen and needing 4-8 controllers synced differently. it wouldn’t be possible on the PS3 if two people were doing separate things in GT5. A simpler way (but less cost-efficiant) would be to use two separate systems and some sort of special A/V cable.

Kind of unrelated, but do any of you guys have issues with Split-screen in GT5? When I do it, sometimes some of the HUD doesn’t show up for one player, but does for the other – and it can be any portion of it; the speedometer with the rev-counter, the mini-map, the lap counter, etc. Also, there isn’t ever any smoke, dust, or rain, no matter what… Is the PS3 not powerful enough to support this with two different human players? All of the smoke/dust shows up in the replays, though…

    1. another_jakhole

With Split-Screen in Arcade, smoke doesn’t show. I can’t remember if skidmarks appear. I wouldn’t doubt it.

Unless you’re talking about single player too.

    2. TomBrady

Skidmarks do appear. I never noticed that there isn’t smoke.

The only thing that really bugs me about split screen is the lack of at the very least, a hood camera. Chase and bumper are the 2 worst and my 2 most hated views in the game. THIS ISN’T GT2 PD!!! lol

    3. another_jakhole

Damn. I’m just agreeing with everything you’ve said on this page.

I can’t use the chase cam when I’m racing. The hood cam was my choice for when the standards didn’t have cockpit view and only after giving in to using the standards.

    4. Quakebass

Yes, I was wondering why there wasn’t any smoke (particle effects) worked in split screen, yet worked in the replays of the split screen races. Single player is fine.

    5. TomBrady

      @another_jackhole
Do we usually not agree or is it just a weird coincidence?

I can’t use chase cam either. When they recently changed the chase cam, and made it more dynamic I actually was able to use it but then they changed it back. I can use bumper cam, I just really don’t like it. I hate not being able to see my car and sometimes having to remind my self what I’m driving. Hood/roof cam is a good compromise if they can’t do cockpit. I wish they would add that

  23. occasionalracer

Great bundle! How exactly does the audio work in SimulView? Is there separate audio output to each player?? Can one person use the analog output with the other the optical/digital?

    1. Quakebass

Well, you’d either get the usual split-screen audio, or I think the glasses have headphones that you can use… I saw this at a Best Buy near me…

  24. another_jakhole

“Their strategy appears to be working, with initial shipments of the bundle having reportedly sold out at most UK retailers.”

    That’s good to hear.

  25. MANU56BZH

“The PlayStation 3D Display is currently available for $299.99 at Amazon in the United States, £409.99 at Amazon in the UK, and can be found at other European retailers for €499.”

    – 299$

    – 409£
    – 499€

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!!
    Bhéééé bhéééé……..

    1. Quakebass

      Yeah, are the prices backwards? $300 = about £186, £410 = about $660, and €500 = about $655 – $660… I’m glad I’m in the US…
