GT5’s Online Features Remain Crippled by PSN Outage

What started as downtime in the PlayStation Network last Thursday has gradually snowballed into a very serious problem for gamers. The inability to connect to PSN has rendered Gran Turismo 5’s online features and races useless, with angst is growing in our forums and around the world.

If you haven’t heard, Sony is blaming the downtime due to an “external intrusion” of the network, but have not yet provided a time frame on when they will bring the system back online.

One bit of good news: a new “muscle car” Seasonal Event became available in GT5 shortly before PSN went down. A few of our users were able to grab the updated event, which should become available to everyone once the service is back online. At least GT Academy time trials aren’t under way at the moment…! Good luck to the PlayStation Network engineers.

  2. Max

I’m feeling pushed to get an xbox, I originally bought the ps3 for gt5 and it was slightly disappointing but now with the psn outages and the exclusivity of halo and gears 3 I’m unsure whether to switch :S Or just buy an xbox aswell

  3. guyc1161

my post on senator blumenthal should be regarded as a heads up in case you weren’t aware that psn user info was compromised.i personally have never used a cc on psn but those of you who have should take the necessary steps to make sure you dont become a victim of cc fraude.
and then there is allways the possibility of identity theft.

  4. guyc1161

funny how after a U.S. senator (Richard Blumenthal,Conneticut) writes a letter to SCEA demanding, requesting, answers as to why sony isn’t updating their 50 to 75 million users/clients as to wether or not their personal info ,names addresses passwords credit card numbers etc…. have been compromised or not after the recent hacker attack on psn.that now all of a sudden they have posted a new update on playstation.com stating that in fact yes the above mentioned info was compromised.
    Could be just a coincidence.

    Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer,

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

    1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;

    2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and

    3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state/province, zip or postal code), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity passwords and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence that credit card data was taken at this time, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, to be on the safe side we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may also have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security, tax identification or similar number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant to review your account statements and to monitor your credit or similar types of reports.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please check http://www.eu.playstation.com/psnoutage should you have any additional questions.

    Sincerely,

Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment Teams

Everything You Need To Know About The PlayStation Network Outage

Mike Epstein — Everything You Need To Know About The PlayStation Network Outage It has been almost a week since Playstation Network went offline because of an external intrusion.

Since Sony’s still relatively quiet on the details of what happened and how it will impact us. How long until we can play Portal 2 online, fatalize our buddy on the other side of the country in Mortal Kombat? Is my credit card info safe? Will I keep whatever offline trophies I earn?

You, we, everyone wants answers. Well, we’ve got ’em. Some of them, anyways. Before you go nuts, yell at your fellow forum-goers and throw out your machine, let us answer some of your basic PSN outage related questions.

Drop more in here and we’ll see what we can do to get to the bottom of them for you.
    The BIG PSN Outage FAQ

How long has PSN been down?
The system went down last Wednesday, April 20th. (That’s six days if you’re keeping score.)

    When will it be back?
No one really knows, not even Sony. Current rumors suggest that PSN may be going back online in Japan today (4/25), with the US and Europe coming back tomorrow. (4/26)

Can I play games without going online, either by myself or with a friend locally?
Absolutely. Almost every PS3 game, whether it’s played via disc or download, will work so long as you’re using a mode that doesn’t require PSN access. (That’s internet multiplayer, mostly.) There is a small exception to this, which I’ll explain a little later.

    What about using a LAN?
Sure, a setting up a little LAN party would be a great alternative. The only problem is that the selection of LAN-capable PS3 games is pretty limited.

    Is Anonymous responsible?
Probably not. The group has publicly denied their involvement, and there has been no definitive proof to say otherwise.

So why are they being arrested?
They aren’t. The rumor is based on an old press release from January.

If the network was hacked, should I be worried that someone is stealing my credit card number?
Sony has said that they are investigating whether or not any credit information was stolen. As of now, they haven’t said anything about the status of that investigation. So far there have been no credible reports of identity theft connected to the shutdown.

Some games use digital rights management to prevent piracy. Will that affect my ability to play?
As of now, the only games that we know to be affected are a pair of Capcom downloadable games, Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 and the Final Fight/Magic Sword game pack.

So I can’t play any games online or use PSN. Can I still use non-game PSN apps like Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc?
Nope. No game modes, apps or DLC connected to either PSN or Qriocity are currently available.

UPDATE: As you can tell from the comments section, we are getting conflicting reports on whether or not Netflix is actually working at the moment. Many commenters and forum-goers have claimed that they’ve been using Netflix for days, often noting that the service doesn’t always connect right away, but starts up on the second or third try.

What about features like the browser, which use the internet, but aren’t connected to PSN?
Users have reported via forums that the PS3 browser still works.

Can I still get system updates?
The system update feature is not connected to PSN and is therefore functional. (Ever notice that you have to sign out of PSN to download an update?) Users can still also download system updates via the Playstation website.

Is there a chance my trophies could get wiped?
Trophies will not update as long as PSN is down, but since most of them are not internet-based, it’s likely (but not definite) that the trophies that you earn during the shutdown will be added to your account when it updates once PSN is back online. If you were to delete your account or if your console were to crash, however, you would definitely lose any trophies earned while PSN is down. Currently, it is not possible to check trophies via the Playstation website.

Will I lose my saved game data?
Not likely, your saved game data is stored on your hard drive, and therefore should not be affected by the outage.

Am I more likely to lose my data if I’ve been using the cloud storage feature of
    Playstation Plus?
No. While you definitely aren’t able to update any data you’ve saved in the cloud, the cloud data is technically a copy of whatever was saved from your machine, so even if the back-up data was lost your save would still be in tact on the machine where it was originally recorded.

      QUESTION
Any idea how people are blogging on the us playstation website everyday when being logged into psn i required to do so?

  8. Steph290

Well it’s nearing a week, and although I am disappointed with the situation, I’ve never had an issue with the PSN…so all the best to the Sony engineers who are missing out on sleep trying to keep our society safe.

  9. Limelight788

It seems that a lot of stuff is happening in the world now, including gaming. I hope to god this gets straighten up soon. Might be a good idea to start playing my Wii again anyway.

  10. Leadpaint

It seems that all of this is due to CFW. Found this tidbit over at PSX-Scene.

“The truth is, there was a new CFW (custom firmware) released known as Rebug. It essentially turns a retail console into a dev console (not fully, but gives you a lot of the same options that usually dev’s only have access to). Anyway, this new CFW was quickly figured out to give CFW users access to the PSN network again via the dev networks. With a little manipulation of the URL’s through a proxy server you could get your hacked console back online. Not that big of a deal, right? Well, it also turns out that some people over at NGU found out that you could provide fake CC# info and the authenticity of the information was never checked as you were on Sony’s private developer PSN network (essentially a network that Sony trusted). What happened next was extreme piracy of PSN content. Sony realizing the issue here shut down the network.”

  11. GMW

It sucks that PSN is down but if they can make it stronger, safer and better when they put it back up then I’m all the happier for it. Stuff happens and PSN was just unlucky. I’ll be fine till it’s back up. Wishing them all the best in fixing the problem.

  12. infamousDee

I think that many people don’t understand who Anonymous are. There is no ‘real’ Anonymous; ‘Anonymous’ can be anybody that chooses to be known under that moniker – “because none of us are as cruel as all of us.” ;)

  13. burkies_leafs

heres a question, an hour ago another update on ps3.com saying its a time intensive AND they dont have a time frame for us. Ok so how are the people commenting on the ps3 blog page when you need to be logged in on psn to comment. Any ideas? PM me if so

  14. burkies_leafs

its not gt5 that has the issue its the servers, no online gaming for any game not just gt5 sheesh, i called xbox after telling them i had no idea i had to pay for live cause of ps3. said monies tight after 360 purchase and they gave me a year gold.

    1. Streaker

XBOX live has been down for 2 weeks and had a class action lawsuit for outages. Good luck. Networks fail, marriages fail, systems fail…that commercial is true.

  15. LeeC2202

Good job we’ve got all those A-Spec events to keep us going, while online is out of action./sarcasm

This is what happens when you release a game with a sub-standard level of offline content. Now all those people using the “just play it online, because that’s where the action’s at.” can get an idea how us offline players feel. Welcome to the REAL world of GT5.

  16. Vinnie

This entire experiance with GT5 has been a big messy headache. I think that the creators should focus on fixing the game itself (game saves, better exhaust tones, more bonus races, make it easier to gain credits, make the hard-to-find vehicles a little easier to obtain, and just fix the game on a “game play” level. There are also a few things with the physics engine that could be a little more accurate. I’ve been envolved in automotive racing for over 20 years. Some of the cars that I’ve personally owned or piloted are just not accurate. I know it for a fact. But we’ll just keep watching them fix money glitches. C’mon! This is getting re-friggin’-diculous! All I can honestly say at this point is…..I’m not happy with the game at all! Yet we all continue to play because there is nothing else out there unless you want to spend a butt-load of money on a gaming pc and all the necessary components. Oh well. Guess we’ll just have to keep waiting and being dissapointed. :(

  17. HSV_GTS

The PS3 system is good if it took 5 years before someone could hack it, I still wish they would add more Aussie cars in standard and some in premium and Bathurst!!

    1. febgo189

LOL. Even Hitler is upset about it. Bill Gates has hacked PSN. Everyone go to Bill Gates’s house and beat him up.

  18. Super_Colossal

Today was my birthday. I was born in ’92, so I was hoping to get my free car, which could have been an R92CP. My luck.

    1. J-KiLLA24

I feel your pain bro lol, it’s my birthday today too! Why does it have to be near my birthday when PSN all of a sudden goes down. Suks

    2. AnPrionsaBeag

I was born in 75 and there’s not a single car from that year in GT5, so no birthday reward for me ever!

  19. Jake

@vermontster. Same here man, it sucksthat you get to here about all these online “adventures” and then not only at the end ofa work week, but a 3 day weekend off work for holiday and all I wanted was 1 “me” day to spend on PSN… Bad timing Playstation u should have at least waited until Monday… -my 2 cents-

  20. Snjper

    SOny….

“Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.”
    .
“We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available.”

  21. Snjper

Anon says…. they have nothing to do with this outage. Read: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-04-21-is-anonymous-behind-psn-outage

Of Course take it with a grain of salt but no matter who’s fault it is Sony will most likely pin it on Anon just so it will fuel more legal action and get people to hate what Anon’s original goal, which is supposed to be the case still, of taking back what ours.

Call me blind but I cant see how a small group could take out an entire network that is ran by Sony. If that truly is the case then I’m kinda happy cause obviously Sony has no clue about network security and redundancy. I just hope that none of my information was stolen.

At the end of the day Sony has said nothing of what has and hasn’t happened so none of us can say its Anon or any other hackers fault.

    1. Masonite

Anonimous is in no way a small group lol has evryone forgottin wiki leaks? & when they hacked that Federal site & those Bank sites & had a cyber war vs goverment ? Sony,s a MAJOR corperaition but the goverment has better tech & legal power & Anonimous still almost won the cyber war (it was short) PS. they (sony said it was a network intruision (hack) but i dought by Anonimous btw Anonimous has like thousends of members & a large portain can hack most majer sites bythemselves.. the not small

  22. pigboy

    …why u say that D…DiD D Do it???
some say excellence is spelt THE STIG
we all know its spelt THE PIG
i dont know how many use a steering wheel(G25 ere)but i could never be bored or wanting online fetures(except cars and drivers set to online).theres so much practice to do,or paying races, practice heel, toe witch shortens braking distance by a little bit.im smiling when practicing, then i swith to interior view of me mazdo 787b,or 908 hdi.PSN is free so we get it good.piggy smilin
    rrereeeeeeeeeeee

  23. Xenosapien90125

Anonymous are a bunch of half-wit nerds and JRPG geeks, they started on 4chan and that should say enough about their “agenda”. Furthermore, I do agree with some of their sentiments, for instance, scientology sucks. To tell us that they’re doing us a service is absurd. I’m not saying they’re responsible, but they sure do act all high-and-mighty and that kind of arrogance breeds malice.

  24. Davide

Apparently the guys at “anonymous” are fighting a battle for everybody’s rights. Sony managed to get the list if all the people that visited websites that talks about hacking the ps3. We pay the machine loads of money and if we are curious to find out if there’s a way to turn it into a pasta maker we should at least be free to look on a website and find out. It’s our freedom involved. We should be free to surf any website we want. My opinion.

    1. stoney71

I don’t agree with the way Anon is doing things, but I do agree with you that we should be free to look at any website that we wish to look at without worrying about Sony or anybody else spying on us. My opinion, also.

    2. SKOT Free

Uh no dude, again, that was something totally different. Sony only did that to prove that Geohot was hacking PS3 and Providing others with the info to build a case against him, not to ban anyone who just looked at The page. Sony was contending that Geohot was running a business jailbreaking PS3’s or selling the info.

    3. stoney71

Maybe so, but I still don’t think Sony or anyone else should be able to get a list of people who visited that, or any other website for any reason. It sets a bad presidence for other lawsuits with intent to limit our freedoms. That is the part I don’t agree with. Again, my opinion. That being said, I still don’t think that Anon or whoever is attacking Sony is doing the right thing either. There are much better ways at getting your point across to the so called “machine”.

  25. jakeBG19

It isn’t supposed to be up until Tuesday according to insiders :( ,its on IGN.com if u want to look.Just thought I would warn people in advance lol

  26. LoneWanderer

I’ve been playing all of my offline games since PSN was down. I got an easy opportunity to platinum R&C: ACIT and once again finished Fallout: New Vegas. And I played a bit of GT5. With PSN, I would be playing Killzone 3 right now.

  27. burkies_leafs

So they decided to pull the plug indefinatly while they re-construct their server structures, good news? yes for those who wish for higher quality. Bad news? Unless they had a new system structure in the works already it could be anywhere from a week to a month waiting on a new system. they need to research the intrusion, adapt test beta the works. No point in rushing when so much information is on the line.

    1. petrolhead998

AAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHH HAVE TO RESORT TO OFFLINE BUT NOT GT5 all drivers and good cars shared FGT championship to do FGT set to online

    2. jag

my drivers B-spec are all on-line, but i d’ont need them… but now i miss remote races. The cars have only 6 on-line and i can’t put more than 6. Yeah, this off of PSN is good to me to visualize 2 races of 24h that i have musst to do or beginning :)

  28. SKOT Free

You guys wanna know what’s crazy? On Monday AT&T was having trouble with it’s servers too to The point I couldn’t register my New Internet account, since I just moved. Then by Tuesday into wedsday I kept trying to get my Router to give me NAT2 instead of NAT3 so I too was logging off and on PSN testing my connection. My PSN logged on up until Wedsday nite, but I still don’t know if my Router settings are any good! Uggggh

  29. Jas89e

Well by the sounds of it lucky I had playstation remove all banking details couple of weeks ago over the phone

  30. NFSCARBON1

Didn’t Anon hack PSN the other week? After which PSN has been buggy and a little unstable? Perhaps Anon’s hack opened the door for someone else to get into the system. I read in one of the forums that someone was getting a lot of port scanning on the ports PSN uses, from China.

    1. Masonite

Anonimous called off there attacks but it could be anonimous members working w/o orders or it could be fail over flow

    1. Imprezive

      Fix this “problem”*

      Find a “solution”*

I think your thoughts got mixed up there, bud. ;) Nonetheless, we all know what you’re saying. lol

  31. Masonite

Maybe it wasn,t anon who hacked PSN, my friend (who would support anonymous even if they killed 30 babys) said it was fail overthrow or something like that (they attacked before anon but there weaker than anon heres what happened to my knolage fail or anon found away to add funds (& probably veiw credit info) so they started illegaly adding funds to evryone who entered the PSstore (DAMMIT I WAS OFFLINE) so sony had to shut down the network now there working on improving the system & updating security (i wouldve done that when two groups full of hackers threatened to hack the system) peaple who won,t GT5,Infamous 2 beta,GTA 4,COD BO are all going to have to wait a little longer. i just hope its back up soon

  32. xl M0NTANA lx

this would never happen with XBOX live! its worth the 5 bucks per month people. Sony is a joke the way they have things set up….no DL packs or maps packs…grrr, lame excuses is all i hear from sony and polyphony digital.

    1. SKOT Free

What are you talking about this won’t happen on XBOX live? I bet you that it WILL happen at some point. Nothing is 100% secure and MS software has so many security holes it’s not even funny!

    2. mcfizzle

People seem to forget that XBox Live was down for around 2 weeks in January 2008. It can happen to any network, paid or not.

  33. SKOT Free

I am so sick of people saying that geohot and Anon are fighting for the Good of gamers everywhere. The fact is, sure go ahead Jailbreak your ps3 till your hearts content, Sony just said don’t bring it onto the PSN and cheat, but people couldn’t do that. And yes Sony does have a right to say what’s on the PSN

    1. LeeC2202

You don’t get it do you? When Microsoft discovered people were using hacked 360s on XBL, did they decide to remove something from EVERYBODY’S console, or did they target just the people with hacked consoles?

Microsoft said “If you individually bring it online, we’ll individually ban you”. Sony said “someone might individually bring it online, so we’ll punish every single one of you, whether you’ve done something or not.”

That is the whole foundation of this argument. These people don’t care if they can go online or not, they care about having the freedom to use their console in a way that Sony designed it to be used.

Remember one very important fact, The CELL was DESIGNED with a redundant SPE for OtherOS usage. No matter how many people try and deny it was an “advertised” feature, it was a DESIGN FEATURE from day one. Sony went about this completely the wrong way, and now they’re paying the price for it.

I’m sure none of you were bothered when they removed OtherOS, in fact, you probably mocked all the people complaining. Well guess what, those that WERE bothered, now don’t care that people that play online, don’t have that feature either. So how does it feel to be on the receiving end?

  34. Fastphil96

Oh Noes!!!! A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM!!!! If you’re so dependent on online gaming, maybe you should take a step back and look at your life…

    1. Vermontster

These type of statements are just a little silly. Who are you to say what I can do with my free time.

I’m older than most of you young whipper snappers. I work 40 plus hours a week, take care of my 5 year old and maintain a household. So, why is it so hard to understand that people are upset about no online service. It’s not that I don’t have a life. Quite the opposite. It’s what I like to do after a long day of “life stuff”. Nothing more, nothing less.
Please refrain from ASSumptions and top bashing people who like to spend a little time gaming.
I’m not angry, just my 2 cents is all.

    2. Imprezive

      +1, Vermontster

I love that people tend to assume that being upset about online play being down automatically means that you have no life outside of it. If my hobby was going to the movies after work, and then all of a sudden the movie theaters shut down, I’d be upset too. It’s not a matter of being the type of basement nerd who can’t live without constant online gaming, it’s about people being cut off from what they love to do in whatever amount of free time they may have. Whether it’s all day long or just a few hours after work.

    3. Fastphil96

You guys are right, of course. I work hard and enjoy my time off too, but I don’t have trouble finding something else to do if my number one choice is not available. A PSN outage is far from being a major problem for me.

  35. guyc1161

    addenda:

anonymous are responsible for the attack on psn, they have issued a statement apologising to psn users stating they didn’t want to target innocents only sony.in otherwords their attack on sony wasn’t so well thought out (amateurs).
they have gone on to state that they will attack sony again as soon as the psn is back up,but have added that they will not attack its users (this implies that psn will not be attacked).
now no matter where they attack you can expect adverse effects,be it consumer services, billing, and so on.
sony has not been forthright with info as to the extent of the damage caused by these attack so keep an eye on your cc statements.
as for how long the psn will be down who knows, anon have declared they will attack again and sony is surely working on building defenses which could take a while.

    1. SKOT Free

You are confusing two different hack attacks. The attack anon apologized for happened before Geohot settled the case with Sony. They claim they didnt do this one but regardless, my opinion is they are still responsible because they basically opened the door to this. I think Sony probably planned to upgrade the servers after that first attack but was going to wait until this second one and they just went ahead and did it now. I’m more worried about my PSN account info getting into the wrong hands.

  36. Andrew

If this is truly the work of some anti-Sony group then they are just sad and pathetic people. There are corporations guilty of far worse crimes than anything Sony has been accused of. And in regards to Geohot, it was a win for the hackers for him to settle because Sony had the backing of the law and it would have set a precedent in court that would severely hurt hacker’s legal status. If he went to trial, it would have actually given Sony/MS/Apple/Etc. more legal footing to prevent consumers from hacking/jailbreaking/homebrewing/etc. the devices that they pay for and own. They can claim that Sony is evil, but law enforcement and our legal system allowed them to behave that way, take it out on the legal system and law enforcement, not Sony.

  37. GOTMAXPOWER

I’m glad I don’t have any card details on PSN, which loads of hackers probably have now. Sony should get Chuck Norris to deal with whoever (Bill Gates) has done this :p

  38. Leadpaint

They hope to have the network back up in several days. After the hackers used a LOIC attack the Admin Dev accounts were breached. This is the reason for having to rebuild the servers.

  39. guyc1161

    @gOLD

Anonymous is unstructured from what i’ve been able to gather ,just a bunch of hackers ranging in age between 13 and whatever. How can they say they r not responsible, whats to keep any indiviual member or members from carrying out these attacks, anon did take credit for the first attack on PSN did they not.

    1. Masonite

Anon isn,t that unorginized you know remember wiki leaks? Anon & the goverment had a cyber war.. sure i think the goverment won but they came close i,d like to see any number of 13 year old do that PS.im not supporting Anonimous i just don,t consider them weak & they probably didn,t attack sony,if there not affraid to say oh yea we hacked those bank sites & stuff that the military would hang us for they won,t be afraid to say ,ya we hacked a major corperaition thats in no way a threat PPS. (lol) don,t forget anons not the only hacker group to target sony.

    1. Dan Souds aka GT5Pro

HAHA! That was hilarious. I have been reading these comments getting more and more furious at everybody and anybody involved in this PSN/Qriocity hack, but this comment finally broke the rage and made me sit back and chuckle. and on a side note, isn’t that “anonymous” mentioned above the same people involved with WikiLeaks?

    2. Benny44

Haha….excellent Azuil. Maybe a babyboom for GTers and other sim type games but for a lot of gamers I’m pretty sure that girlfriends/wives are only something they have online :)

    3. Benny44

I guess it’s just my failed attempt at trying to be funny and think of the stereotypical RPGer. Not always true anymore – many of them have grown up and have families.

  40. STIGGY_34

Damn the easter bunny just brought me eggs i wanted PSN fixed oh well insomnia will be killer boring now!!!

  41. CMvan46

I didn’t realize how much I like GT5 online features until this has happened. This really sucks all over Easter weekend…

Really getting frusterated now… what happened to “a full day or two” ?????

  42. DeadlyHabits87

Unfortunately no online Easter Races (on circuit Zandvoort)…

    Off-topic:
“If I will see one of those Anonymous knuckleheads I will hack their skulls with a PS3 Controller, Playstation Move style..YEAHHH..

  43. Snjper

We get what we pay for right?

Yet I’d like to remind some of the xbots that XBL was down a few times do to being overloaded, Halo….

But… when you have people paying for something there is a larger flame under your ass to fix the issues.

  44. MeToo

Some responsibility lies with Sony for this, they should have defenses against hackers, did they honestly not foresee that someone might try to hack thier network? Its like “hello, anybody home Sony, think SOny, think”

    1. burkies_leafs

lol yeah they do have alot of defences but read up on the hacking methodoligy cahnges daily and alot of brilliant minds (mostly young) come up with new was to adapt. Anon might not be the culprit but they are definatley the ones to blame as they shared thier ddos hack methods with many on their icp

    2. CarbonFlywheel

This is a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. These are almost impossible to defend against because one person can control a botnet with thousands of computers worldwide to attack a single point.

Theres not much Sony can do but hunker down and wait till its over, because finding the culprit behind a DDoS is damn near impossible too.

tl;dr Sony cant defend against these attacks.

    1. Tvensky

      I hate hackers on PS3!

but, I have to admit I do use hacked products on my PC (not proud of it) I live in quite poor country, and I can’t afford to buy all products for my PC… So “yay” for hackers on PC.. and “Boooooo” for hackers on PS3… cuz I support every game I buy and I pay money for ps3 just because there are no cheating hackers and other cheap stuff like on PC… in one word – quality… hope its getting fixed and all responsible get in jail for doing it and ruining holydays for gamers! PS its quite nice weather out there.. and I will go to see some Drag Racing today, at least. :)

  45. burkies_leafs

lmao this is certainly the work of those worthless hacks, i dont do online banking or even credit purchases. I USED to believe in what their fighting for but if this is about freedom of speech then their speaking the wrong language. PS3s products their call their rules. But to deny the fact that this is a deliberate attack is like calling rhinos smooth around the edges. Theyve ruined alot of long weekends for people that cant game through the week, they lost alot of support from those that will be hacking them soon enough when they grow up. PROPS TO PLAYSTAION AND I HOPE YOU GUYS GET IT FIGURED SOON

  46. pigoy

im waiting for either the next ice age or online dealership updated.they musnt have good cashflow.i send maldonado and s.loeb bacl to dreamcar with the x2010muira only left to save for.bleh@ horn no??? for 500 cars.reee

  47. Trinumerate

Just a quick note: It wasn’t Anon.

I strongly suspect that this kind of hack was in the works for a long time now, the timing was intentional in order to make a reasonable case for Anon having done it. I’m not defending Anon, they’re not “the good guys” (at least not most of the time), but this falls far outside a) their MO and b) their capabilities at the moment.

Long story short: Change your passwords on all your accounts that have the same password as your PSN and keep a very close eye on your creditcard statement.

    1. burkies_leafs

it wasnt? based on what? cause he called out ps3? cause they lost thier litigation against ps3? cause they vowed revenge? do your research kid.Im not saying your right or wrong but for you to say it wasnt anon makes you either blind mis informed or just plain….well you can imagine whats in store if they showed there faces instead of being cowards

    2. jvchevy27

he is not totally wrong because anon still needs to figure out if they really want to work against “Geohot” who is now working for sony as part of the settlement, the settlement more or less states he will no longer hack sony products without their permission and he will help them with security of their products, very ironic if you look at the event sequence

    3. FelipeJardim

I think sony should have hackers working for them. Man i’d love to run into a anon in real life. How would they like dealing with real life “hackers”. All my tools for work hack and it would be fun to rough one up for beliving in such stupidity.

  48. Andrew

I agree with SNEA’s decision to bring PSN down until the vulnerability is closed. Please remember that PSN has potentially millions of CC numbers or personal information, and some reports have claimed the data is transferred unencrypted between PS3 & PSN due to the percieved security of a “closed” system. Better safe then sorry. Just hope your waiting on a fix server side not Firmware as Sony doesn’t disclose where the attack originated.

On a side note Not all of PSN is crippled as MLB 11 The Show updated last night without being signed into PSN. Interesting…

    1. Antony Henley

Most of your games will update outside of the PSN, It did it to me on friday with Uncharted 2. Although Red Faction Battlegrounds dies and resets the PS3 everytime I try to update.
The Xbot losers will be making a field day over this but hey so what hopefully we wont have to wait 2 weeks till our network is back up and running (furiously crosses fingers).

  49. I HAVE OTHER GAMES?

This “down time” gives me an opportunity to play games I haven’t played in a long time.
    DiRT
    Shadow Of The Colossus
    Toca3
    BLACK
    GRID
    Tourist Trophy
It’s actually been kind of fun.
You know. Like figuring out what to do when you loose power because of a storm.

    1. Imprezive

I popped GRID in for the first time in a while the other day. It was so hard to drive. xD

Once I got used to driving in sims again, playing GRID was tough. I couldn’t stay on the road with those physics. It’s still a fun game though in its own right.

    2. raybould1345

Same. I have been playing F1 2010 for the past couple of days and have actually enjoyed it. Been dying to get GT5 back on though.

  50. Brandon

Any chance GTP can swing it’s weight around a bit and get PSN back up quicker?

    ..Just kidding! :D

Good luck to the network engineers, indeed.

  51. GTP_Rcrcool9 says...

This is ridiculous! I am 80% of the time on GT5 ONLINE!! I can’t believe some stupid anonymous members were so butthurt about those jailbroken PS3s that they had to hack into Sony’s databases and make PSN unable to function. This not only hurts Sony, but it hurts EVERYONE, NOT JUST THE PEOPLE WITH GT5. And what about the people with MAG?! That game NEEDS online to be able to play! Anonymous really outdid themselves on this one. And I swear, when I find out who someone from Anonymous and I find them, I am going to beat the living f…. out of them!!!

    1. Defend

Same here bro my god now I’m
Going to sell my ps3 for a xbox… I’m sooooo bored over the weekend n it just ruined it… :/

    2. Imprezive

      @Defend

Selling your PS3 to buy and XBOX because of this is like selling your car to buy another because you got a flat tire. The PSN outage has little to do with the quality of the system itself. XBOX Live was brought down before too. And last time I checked, you can still play games offline (unless MAG is the only game you play).

I’m fairly certain you can still find things to do to keep from being bored this weekend.

  52. XaNaVi NiSmO

Also with the outage, people that were planning trades now have to push all of it back cos of this.

good luck to the engineers, hacking is the hardest thing to undo all of its damage

  53. themartlab

And those who have time to obtain the new seasonal muscle car event can’t even try it since there’s no PSN!

  54. GTbyPlaystation

This has been especially annoying, considering it’s easter holidays.
What countries don’t have access to PSN? I heard it’s a selection, like AUS, UK etc.

  55. Fritter

I was gonna get the 10 million credit trophy, then buy the Formula from the online dealership, probably this weekend. Looks like I won’t be doing either for a bit.
I’m all up for the occasional ‘sticking it to the man’ when it’s deserved, but this is stupid. Sony had a right to sue GeoHotz, and I’m behind Sony 100% on this one (I assume that this case was the cause of all this).

    1. speedrcr

You do realize if Sony wins this will change the digital landscape and companies will have the right to dictate what we can and cannot do to these products that we have bought.

I think you need to read more into what George Hotz is trying to stand upo against. He wasn’t for piracy, he wasn’t even trying to deprive money from Sony. Sony was mad he found a way to bring OtherOS back to the PS3. He’s manily known for being the guy who jail broke iphones and allowed users not to be confined to the
      Apple eco system.

He’s actually fighting for your rights to do whatever you want to with your PS3. IMO you should back George, instead of Sony. Its Sony’s lawyers and executives that want to limit your rights. Stand up for it!

    2. BMfan

What he did was open the door to allow other people to play cracked games,Geo is an idiot and the people that paid him money are suckers.
I’m so tired of hearing people say he ‘unlocked the iphone’,so what that doesn’t make it a console. He unlocked the iphone so you could use open source applications.
After seeing headlines like this ‘GeoHot joins Anonymous’ boycott of Sony, asks you to come along’ i don’t know how so many people still follow him.

    3. maven_punk

You are a bit behind the times. GeoNot settled out of court and agreed to follow the rules from now on. I heard he also agreed for Sony to make a movie of his life. What a sellout haha

    4. CorporateHammer

While I do agree with buying something and being able to use it as I see fit, I however don’t think the situation with George is as much a “consumer rights” stand as some are led to believe. The guy profited by accepting donations and distributed files on the same site which has been his downfall. Had he stuck with the freedom of information like his victory with the iphone case and released something to allow .mkv playback and soft subs I think I’d be more supportive. Taking donations on the same site your releasing info on how to copy games = bad day in court.

  56. zdenko

This is bugging me so much, we have a long weekend here in Austrlia (5days) Plus i booked leave in for work, so I have 10 days off. My plan was to finish B-spec off because I’m level 39, but all of my drivers are locked to online mode!!!! Can’t get them off that unless you are online. If I personally meet one of these so called hackers I will smack em out.
I’m playing Modnation Racers now instead :).

    1. The_KELRaTH

I thought this might be a good time to run some B spec endurance races but all my drivers were set to remote racing before the PSN outage and now I can’t switch them back to non remote!!!

    2. brainfade

“Maybe it was caused by someone that worked for xbox” < it was, they stirred up the trouble by stirring on certain websites

    3. MrSkyline

It probably was bill gates himself :p

Anyway, its to bad but its not a disaster.
Its easter, and here the weather is great, so i have more important stuff to do than to play games, sitting in the sun with a nice cold pint of beer for example :p
Ow and not to forget, some bread with my own home made tzatziki <3

    4. Chris Gunstone

We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.

We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available.

    5. Devedander

Just a heads up, the reason this all went down is because someone found a way to install a CFW on PS3’s that makes them dev console PS3 and this let them connect to PSN again despite being CFW.

A side benefit of this was that when buying things on PSN, credit card info was not validated, so all kinds of fake purchases went through.

Sony shut down PSN to fix this issue. Once it’s resolved, PSN should be back up.
