Japan’s Red Bull 5G 2014 Hosts Dramatic GT6 Competition

The third annual Red Bull 5G competition was held in Tokyo, Japan last week, and the Gran Turismo 6 round of the country’s preeminent gaming contest offered the most excitement and drama at the event.

The 5G competition was started by Red Bull back in 2012, and hosts Japan’s top gamers in five genres: first-person shooters, racing, sports, fighting, and puzzle. It introduced the first “fan-less” version of Adrian Newey’s X2010 concept car to GT5, and qualification for this year’s contest began back in March via a special GT6 Seasonal Event.

The country’s fastest Gran Turismo gamers eventually qualified, but the faces were a bit different this year, with “YAM” – the two-time 5G champion who now travels with Kazunori Yamauchi and works closely with Polyphony Digital to develop the game – failing to pass the regional qualifier.

That left the door open to a new set of finalists to represent the East and West regions of Japan. The competition was fierce but friendly, and the GT6 competition played a role in the eventual victory for “negi” and the Western Japan team.

Ever since I stared fascinated for the first time at Pong I was hooked on video games. Then PAC man, Space Invaders, Pole Position . . . to all the amazing games we have today output on the finest of audio-visual equipment backed by space-age (literally) peripherals.
And crop after crop of the most amazing gamers ever.
Top-flight gamers are a special breed – you give them any game they’ll ace it. Doesn’t matter if it’s a shooter or driver or ‘find a money seed’-game, they’ll find a way to level up and beat the game in next to no time. They’ll shoot the right pixel, drive the file-folder across the desktop fastest, and even find the money seed before everyone else does and start harvesting Simoleons while the average gamer is still trying to fashion an avatar.
This has always given me a special awe for master gamers.

Congrats to all of you. You rock.
    Gamers till we die!!

I wonder if Yam is shaking in his boots. Dude wins the competition twice, gets a job at PD, then fails to pass the regional qualifier. I think he needs more practice…lol.

I’m sure it’s much easier, logistically, for them to host these type of competitions in Japan considering that’s where someone like Polyphony Digital is headquartered. Although, I wouldn’t be shocked if PD gave some support to GTPlanet if Jordan were to contact them and inquire about hosting an event(s) like this somewhere in the United States (or anywhere else GTPlanet Admins have a physical presence). I’m sure that blessing would only be something along the lines of “We’ll send you some signs to hang up, t-shirts to give out and we won’t sue you!” LOL because of their relationship with GTPlanet. What I’m saying is, it probably could be done, but it would be entirely up to this community to organize and run the event(s) without the benefit of PD taking part…unless it had stellar participation and great results. Then, I am sure, PD would probably want to swoop in and take over control.

Yup. Or even Monster. Or Nike. Doritos. Twinkies. These are the stuff of gamers – and these big names should come forth now and start supporting the gaming community because gaming is such a huge industry that is fueled by none other than the gamers themselves.
If we all stopped gaming suddenly there would suddenly be a very large hole in the entertainment industry.
As well as the snack and drink industry.
Come out with your loot right now, big corps! :)
