Kazunori Yamauchi Talks with Top Gear

During his time at Snetterton to watch the two GT Academy 2010 finalists compete for the top spot, Kazunori Yamauchi talked with quite a few journalists. His last interview to be published is with BBC’s TopGear. As you would expect, there aren’t any bombshells, but here’s the most notable quotes:

What did you set out to achieve with Gran Turismo 5?
Since Gran Turismo first launched back in 1997 all the way up until Gran Turismo 4, the style hasn’t really changed. But now I wanted to make it a new package and style for this game genre.

Were there any cars you couldn’t get your hands on for GT5?
We’re still rushing with GT5 as we speak and will be doing so until the last possible moment, so we haven’t come to any conclusions on any of these just yet. There might be one or two cars which drop off if we run out of time.

How did you map out the TopGear test track on Gran Turismo 5?
We had a helicopter taking aerial photographs of the circuit, and had ground crews taking photos and measurements of the track all the way around. It took about three to four days to finish the whole thing.

Because of the interview’s high-profile, this is the first time many people are learning the show’s infamous test track will be featured in GT5, but it was actually confirmed all the way back in 2007. Regardless, there’s going to be millions of people gunning for the Stig’s lap times someday!

I have all the games and haven’t seen 1 BMW 325i or 325is ’93… i really want to see it in the new GT5. Its my childhood favorite because my dad owned 5. Just want to listen to that 2.5 straight 6 engine. PLEASE

  2. MrK

Yamauchi can’t be the Stig, otherwise they would measure the timings in years and not minutes and seconds.

    GT forever

  3. andrea

Anyone not bothered by how relaxed Yamauchi looks in every photo taken of him? You would think that he would be exhausted in his line of work.

But he’s on that next level fo’sho!

  4. xhris

Kazunori Yamauchi is shooting for perfection with GT5 and this is foolish because perfection is unattainable and if by some anomaly he did make GT5 (Perfect) then his way of living would end. Now excellence is attainable he has reached this level and many occasions even perhaps without fully knowing he did. bottom line, nothing on this earth made by man is perfect but many things made by man are excellent.

    we do need new news.
therefore i’m going to create a new website called: GTUniverse…and gtplanet will be no more.

    @Nero

no1 is saying Forza is a bad game or a horrible game
Forza is just a temporary racing game that we could fill our time with till GT5 comes out.

Only xbox game I really like is Forza and I wouldn’t mind playing it anyday.
and I actually like Forza 3 more than GT5 prologue

  7. Ner0_sol03

What’s message is he sendin to forza ??? You no actually forza os a hood game outside the racing:. Like I no that makes. No sense but if u look at all the stuff the game offers it’s acutually pretty good.. Like there auction house and store front… And there livery editing.. So I don’t no what message kaz would be sendng to game that’s alreay made 2 versions of it already when he is still stuck on his first one… And I can’t believe I just defended forza

  8. Devedander

So he’s going for a new style game… wonder if this will effect the certainty some have of how awesome this one will be based on prior successes….

    @ ferrariThug

    hehehe,

I can imagine the photographer – “Ok Kaz, now one final pose for all the GT hatorz out there”

    :-)

  10. Turbo_3800

    @FerrariThug
Yeah that would be awesome lol but so that we won’t be googling wall times for cars it’ll be intergrated somehow. If not Stigs ghost car lap, atleast have his lap times posted. But one can only say “I wish” lol.

    @d3br34k5

Hahaha. Kaz does look pretty thugged out in that picture. He’s got the lean and the facial expressions.

  12. Machita

“We’re still rushing with GT5 as we speak ” WTF is that supposed to mean, like 5 years is not long enough, maybe he should hire more people and stop traveling for worthless interviews.
Every month all we get is new Trailer and new interview telling us what we already know.

  13. igniz248f1

Some say that he never really sleeps…and that if he liked he could produce more ash than Eyjafjallajokull…all we know..is that he is the Stig!!!

Bring on the top gear track!!

  14. Mickle Pickle

The next F1 racing game from Codemaster will feature awesome weather effects, such as dynamic rains conditions… GT5 better include those… because if others can do it, PD should be able to attain it as well…

Furthermore, in WipEout HD, you will be able to play your own music soundtrack from your PS3 HD, Therefore Sony and PD should allow those feature to work on the next GT5 and other games as well !!!!

    Up your offering PD!

I love the Top Gear show with a passion. Their test track though is rather blah. I’ve ran a few laps in GTR’s mod at a buddies. Still, will be cool to take any car, especially the reasonably priced car if included, and compete against real life times. It’s only going to be a 1 car time trial thing though. Will be interesting regardless

  16. CeeJay

it will be interesting to see how they represent the track in GT5. The Top Gear Test track is on a runway & is very wide open with only a few white lines to show where the turns are. If they close the track off with barriers it’s gonna look weird.

  17. Cherokee

I’ve read the whole interwiew, and in one think I agree. The Top Gear track is realy hard to find the driving line and the visual points (tested it on PC, at GTR Evo) At least for the first laps…
Now that the GT Academy is over, please focus un the game and finish it…

  18. TokyoDrift

Of course it’s awesome and a massive selling point. After all, I did mail them years ago about including it.

  19. Webbo

This I think is a massive selling point for GT over other Racing Sims. Having the Top Gear test track, with Top Gear’s huge reputation around the world is awesome for the game.

  20. Browitt

this is awesome because it’s just confirmed that thed top gear track will be defo in the final game!! hope they have a leaderboard of all the celebs lap times which updates and obviously the reasonably priced car!!!
I think GT5 has to be my most anticipated game ever!!!

  21. Soulfighter

    @ Bobert From America
“…and measurements of the track all the way around.”
I would assume they do this by using lasers like they use in civil engineering, and not a tape measure. Maybe even a laserscanner…

  22. RedBaron

Bobert: Good question. I think GT4 with its Nordschleife showed us how important track surface is. But there’s no latest info about that…

  23. ing.nic

It would be grate if both Suzuki Liana and Chevrolet Lacetti could be included in GT5, in the same configurations of the two cars used by celebrity guests during the show.

  24. S3 Racer

If you were a car what car would you be’?

Haahaha so funny. That is so a deep question. Psycological analysis. LOL

  25. S3 Racer

Did someone read the whole interview . Read this:
What’s the next step for Gran Turismo?
[Laughs] We’ll be able to show you something some time in the future. I want people to experience it to find out…

    Does that mean new demo.???????

  26. Bpa94

@Skillcoil you might actually get to, if you play prologue the drivers have the same racing gloves as stig…intriguing

  27. XTT07

WOOOOOOooooooooow…that was a crazy think…TopGear test track in GT5. Sounds great…Kazunori Yamauchi is great:)) Blessed be his game :))Maybe will be soon as possible…G25 and PS3 was waiting for yoooouuuu :D

  28. Forenza

Hell yea “Reasonably Priced car” better be in it….I freakin drive one! lol 05 Forenza…wagon…so sortof lol

  29. John Marine

You’re doggone right people want to be a Gran Turismo re-imagination of the Stig. Stig “pwns” all, but it’s going to be great to use this as a test course.

  30. Matt_Wxxxxxxx

If only some way could be invented for the weight of the cars themselves to be simulated. I suppose one can dream, can’t they?

Even if it were never sold as a massively produced commerical item, I for one would be willing to dish out large sums of money to have the opportunity to own a device for recreating each specific cars feel by simply adjusting the right inputs.

The sort of setups I’ve seen before in which the user sits on a seat tilted about an axis and the entire system sways are a good first step in this direction.

  31. Turbo_3800

PD should incorporate Stig’s lap times for the cars on the Top Gear wall into ghost cars for time trials for us to beat or try to lol
