Rain, Snow, “Spectator Mode”, Faked GT5 Videos & More

An unfortunate set of circumstances required me to unplug for a few days, and I want to get everyone caught up with the latest batch of news over the past week or so. Frankly, there hasn’t been much going on in the world of Gran Turismo, but all of that is about to change with GamesCom 2010 coming up next week! Several GTPlanet members will be in attendance throughout the event, and we’re going to have more exclusive coverage than ever before – watch for more major announcements on that over the next few days. For now, here’s a quick summary of what you did (or…didn’t) miss:

Rain and Snow “Scenery” in Gran Turismo 5

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbQInXiv2G8

During an interview with G4TV at Comic-Con 2010, a Sony rep raised a few eyebrows with a mention of rain and snow “scenery” in GT5. This obviously isn’t the first time we’ve heard about weather coming to the game, but it is the first time snow’s been mentioned specifically. Regardless, this isn’t really particularly newsworthy, as we’ve had both rainy and snowy “scenery” in previous GT titles (remember Chamonix?). The real question remains: will it be “dynamic” and available on all of our favorite tracks? Nobody knows…yet.

Faked GT5 Video Shows Long Load Times

Popular gaming blog Kotaku made a serious error while attempting to call out apparently long load times seen in a GT5 demo. The original video they posted had clearly been slowed to make it appear the Nurburgring Nordschleife took over 1:30 to get started. It didn’t take long for the rest of the web to catch on to their mistake, and they eventually admitted the error. See the unfortunate fiasco for yourself right here.

More Video of GT5’s Online Spectator Mode

The guys who build the VisionRacer gaming rig shared more video of Gran Turismo 5‘s online “spectator mode” which was seen during the GT Academy 2010 national finals. Thanks to VirtualR for the tip!

1st – It would be great if Kaz learned english, so much less confusion

    2nd – This guy should too…

  2. ElieTheBear

have they mentioned something about skiping songs while drivinge by the controller/wheel like in a real car ?

  3. Spaghettimonster

i was just thinking. can we use custom soundtracks for the stereo in top gear test track replays? xD this is gonna be so much fun.

  4. Ferrari

Lol has anyone seen that Nintendo Wii South Park episode?

I feel like doing that to myself atm till GT5 comes out ><!

  5. BWX

    Awesome!!

It looks like we have to sign in now to leave a comment on the news blog.. Maybe less trolling from TD and the like. Sweet, nice decision.

  6. Riad

i think he gave the release date for killzone 3 instead.. i attended the playstation beta even and i notice most of these sony staff were swaping shifts from different booths.

im guessin this could be why he said feb 2nd next year

  7. Erik

Dynamic snow would be nice, but neither new or very hard to create. Mind you, it would take hours of snowfall to create a volume of snow, so all that would be needed in GT5 is basically to create an overlay texture with snow for different types of ground (grass, tarmac, sand etc) that gets more intense as the snowfall continues and a nice effect of snowflakes falling and dancing over the windshield. What they COULD do that would be pretty darn awesome would be to make it look sweeter than any driving simulator has done before. My new dream scenario would then be night rally, snowfall and high beam headlights. And cockpit view… Mmm…

    1. magic ayrton

Totally agree Erik, after all it’s the “magic” with this series that makes us come back for more… the details are very important for that magic to stay alive and grow stronger. But for me Dynamic Rain and night time is most important followed by the sound effects together with handling.. I took a Ferrari F40 out on the Fuji track in GT5P just now, then I looked at a video.. the car is very very badly represented in the game.. felt real slow.. not sure why though.

    2. Rotorist

@magic ayrton: my friend, F40 in GT5P is slow because it has wrong weight. The correct is 1180kg and I think they have it 1360… So, tune it and give a try to enjoy it properly.

  8. GT_Prologue5

Whew….it thought it meant the dynamic weather and spectator mode videos were fake, good thing I read the article. Big sigh of relief. *SIGH*

  9. Ultimate_Playa

I just heard GT5 is going to be pushed back five months so they can add snowmobile racing. Oh well.

  10. JayKayEm

Why is everyone getting excited about snow. With snow in GT4, it should be expected in a sequel, surely.

Dynamic snow, yes, now that would be cool, original and a new feature. However, chances of that….?

Dont worry, the time taken to program dynamic snow was taken up with 3D silly…. ;-)

  11. Ferrari

Lol relax guys game will come November 2nd
I would believe Polyphony Digital over him, and polyhony were the people who told us it’s coming out Nov 2nd

  12. PUKULUKU

Fat Gunt talk to us when you can master stick shift or when you get your license. or when you know what a v8 400 hp engine feels like

  13. AGNT009

This GamesCom better be the end all to all this drama. What reason would there be to hold anything back after this convention? They obviously want to make a buttload of money off this game. To me it would only hurt the opening week sales if they didnt give a complete solid truthful report about every damn feature in the game. Then we will all be salivating on our keyboards and running out to set a new pre orders gaming record. They wont be adding anything new between now and release date, so just spill all the damn beans already. Kaz, your game isnt a bride trying to save herself for her wedding day. GIVE IT UP AND PUT OUT ALREADY!!

  14. fatgunt's fan

Fat gunt is the bestest driver of them all you dirty peoples cannot touchy him he is bad assy. and you are all poo poo’s hhahahahhaha

please feed us some more we are hungry trolls….

    1. Lukyboi

Everyone just leave fat gunt get back to his shell throwing. Maybe someday he will realize this is a gran turismo fansite

    1. FlareKR

They’ve always been one. I laugh every time I hear someone mention they got news from there; 99% of the time, it’s edited a day latter for stupid mistakes.

    1. Sam__NY

I think he meant to say Brickyard 400, the premiere NASCAR event at Indy. (Unless they include classic Indy cars)

Jordan, the missuse of the comments here must be starting to get on your wick.

Id rather see no comments section than have this rubbish to read and distract from the website.

Would having a link to a “News Thread” on the forums be worth considering. At least it would enable such to be moderated properly and have decent conversations?

ok great! but! I used before (2 min. ago) my PS3 for Gtplanet.net website AND! I hated that “Vision racer” banner on the front of my screen when I entered news! It was so annoying.. I now hate vision racer seat! :) but if serious, the “snow news” were great! Hope it will be dynamic.. in other side, how can it be dynamic!? if its winter, the only thing that could and will happen is start to snow :) that isnt so hard to make :) and I dont need such a thing, I can wach on my window how it starts to snow.. it would be great if there would be a feature at least to swich between them, snow, dry, rain etc. And I think that is how it’s going to be! Sorry for mistakes! My primary language is not english! ;)

    1. Vulcao

Your English is good, I can understand you easily, and my first language isn’t English neither.

Yea that Vision Racer banner blocks our Vision and we can’t read the news :)

As for snow, I’d love seeing it dynamic. I think it adds a lot more to the experience. The game becomes more “alive”.

And no, I can’t see it starting snowing here because there is no snow in my country.

    2. BWX

JORDAN JORDAN JORDAN JORDAN JORDAN JORDAN

Please fix the advert blocking all the news stories…

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

    3. BWX

yeah it’s a problem with the PS3 browser- makes it impossible to read news stories.. and sometimes it covers up links in news stories. I almost always check this site with the PS3, so Jordan – PLEASE try to fix that ad. Thanks!

    4. Jordan

I’ve tried, but the PS3 browser doesn’t seem to like the ad code served by Google and I can’t modify that.

    5. tvensky

interesting, maybe you can try to contact Google and tell about the issue, such a big company need to respond in some way, esspesialy when Google made special youtube for PS3, that means they work together in someway…

PS- The PS3 browser is the worst browser I ever used, slowest, ugly, hard to use, hard to do primitive stuff like – comment, copy text, enter options, etc. It seems that Sony dosnt understand how to make a good soft and internet browser yet..

Sony! you are using Microsoft windows in your office anyway! look at it! very simple and you can do whatever you like, thing like playing music in background shouldnt be a feature it has to be a “must be” for everything everytime :) it makes more people happy, more people – more money! sinmple as that :)

    6. SigmaViper11

go tools on your ps3’s browser. It gets rid of the add and so far thanks to the way the site is configured, it doesn’t seem to affect anything other than annoying advertisements.

  17. mr_bright_side

if fat gunt is so good why doesn’t he lay down some laptimes in the time trials. I’m currently in the top 100 in the daytona time trial. Bet you can’t beat it gunt

  18. DemonBlade

In what has been a fairly quiet week of news, Fat Gunts stupidity has at least given some ‘entertainment’ :) I think he must be either a) 8 years old b) retarded c) a forza fanboy in disguise d) jealous that he cannot afford a PS3 e) all the above. What a tool!

  19. Spaghettimonster

really, i wouldnt trust the guy in the first video to even show me where his head is. his mouth is way too quick. we have seen more of this in the past, unfortunately.

    gamescom! :)

  20. Paulo

Rally + snow yes, anything else + snow is dumb. I can remember playing PGR on the Nurb with snow and that lasted all of 2 min. Im sure PD aren’t going down that road, and if so, God help us all.

  21. CamAndtom

    @ Andrew
Really Andrew? Really? You don’t think they would have TIME to implement something as simple as snow (compared to the other extremely complicated things in the game)? They’ve been at this for a solid 6 years. I think they could probably handle a little white weather :-)

  22. G

Wooo the snow and ice rally tracks seem to be in GT5 too, I love them on the PSP high walls of snow sliding sideways setting up your turn a good 50 metres of so away from it NICE!

  23. Owen

I wouldn’t trust a word from that man.

I think we will get some rain on a couple of tracks, and maybe a couple of snow rally tracks too. Same goes with night racing, it’s only on selected tracks.

    1. P37Mac

Sorry if i caused any offence to you magicayrton. Just having a bit of fun, not sure if that means I’m a failure lol I’ll take that in good humour!

  24. SigmaViper11

I hope they reveal license test info @ gamescon. Wasn’t too thrilled having rally license incorprated with the other licenses. Maybe they’ll include drifting in some license tests. I think it’d be coo if they expanded license tests to tuning as well since GT can be a bit ambiguous when it comes to their menus in accordance with adjustment. Just my opinion. As for rain & snow, I can see rain being available on all tracks. Snow on the other hand seems more like a rally thing. I dont see an Audi R10 going down the Sarthe in ice and snow ending to well.

    1. Didier

Yes snow i doe hope its only for rally , i am gone have Problems inuf whit the rain
+ the driving tests , i say the moor the better , always a lot of fun

    2. SigmaViper11

They should cater some of the higher license tests to the new systems, like driving in rain or (in the event they include it) keeping stable during a blow out and nursing it back to the pits. Didn’t GT2 have an International C license? That would be a good place to put it should they bring it back.

    3. Didier

+ it wood be nice to have dificulty setting for engen tempretjer end your stait of oil
during the race . but we cant have it all .
      C license in GT2 ? i dont remember

hope to see jou on the track the 5 t Nov .

    4. SigmaViper11

Apparently there was an International-C License in GT2. Getting all gold would grant you a race spec Mitsubishi 3000 GT. I miss the racing modification.

    1. Fat Gunt

BoBo you mofo you better pray we never meet cos if we did, I’d go jackie chan on your ass boy. That’s right, jackie chan. I’d beat your little ass until you begged me to stop. Then I’d beat you again, and again and again and again, then I’d stop to play some GT5, then I’d BEAT YOU AGAIN.

    2. Strikey182

Wow, Fat Gunt. You really are pathetic! Claiming you can beat someone up who you have never met on the internet is probably the most retarded thing you can do. I assume you are about 10?

    3. Shutup

OKK… when you claim to be a “good driver” what game are you playing? coz the game not out. So it either 1. your pretty daft to prejudge someone you dont know on a game that isnt out yet or 2. your on the wrong website.

    4. Fat Gunt

It doesn’t matter what racing sim it is. It’s not about being good at a game, it’s about good at racing. Which I am. And you are not. Any game in the GT series? I’ll own your ass until you can’t get owned anymore. Heck, it could be mario karts for all I care. Racing is racing. A good racer is a good racer. I am that

    5. BoBo

OK i beleive you as you keep on crying about it on the site.

BUT doesnt mean other people cant drive in a game to an extent that you are describing.

(on topic) snow would be good for rally races but for any others even r3 tyres would be hard to race with!

  25. DemonBlade

Amazon uk have this morning changed the release date of the standard version from 02/11/2010 to 26/11/2010. This is the same date as play.com! Was in Game last Sunday preordering my signature edition and the guy said it will be a simultaneous worldwide release on 02/11/2010 and will be confirmed at Gamescom next week. Only a few days to wait and see huh!

  26. SigmaViper11

what did he mean by “cars will be unlocked as you progress through the game”? Does he mean reward cars or are they planning on restricting the normal by what you want whenever you get the money? Then again this is old, but still.

    1. Didier

In GT 1, 2,3 end 4 ther weur Championchips 1, 2,3 races . wen et the end you
finich furst you unluck a car + you can do dat Championchips moor then wons
to get so extera cash en sell the unluckt cars . i hope its in GT 5 to

      sorry for my englich

    2. SigmaViper11

yea, thats what I remember. I hope it stays like that. Its nice like that. Plus I think games that lock normally purchaseable cars generally suck and are rather unrealistic. I hope PD & Kaz keep the GT tradition.

  27. Mr Latte

Not a very convincing interview or representative.

What Ive noticed on a few of the videos from more recent builds/videos shown is the removal of the “Weather Cloud/Temp” still visible on the “GT Academy” posted above.

So if anyhing this news report has one guy saying variours weather including snow wi be in the game and the point I raise that the “weather icon” has been missing for some time on demos presented this year.

  28. Big Ron

I think, snow will only play a role on rally tracks. Nobody will see snow at Daytona Speedway or Indianapolis.

There were snow rally tracks in GT4, too.

  29. freakyclown

anyone else hear him talk about performance parts that you can “unlock” along with cars to “unlock” too?

    1. SigmaViper11

I seen them run a wet race. One of the more humiliating losses of Marcus Ambrose’s NASCAR career. But he did prove they are surprisingly capable race cars in the rain. Think the race was in the northern US or Canada. I know its a track F1 has run.

    1. Erik

Snow on Nür, at night, in cockpit, with high beams…
If that’s coming true I’m gonna need to get a better TV.

  30. Australian Stig

Yeah, I’m not going to believe anything from that first video – he just sounded like a salesman making it up as he went along.

  31. Falango

    Rain and snow……..22 “Scenery”…….70 tracks………..
This guy is stumbling, and his lips are quivering. Sorry, but I can’t really believe this guy in terms of the snow and rain “scenery” if this refers to rain or snow on some of the tracks we may not expect it on.

  32. Dave-o

who cares about snow. dynamic rain is all you need to affect grip levels and change pit stop stategies. Snow would just be eye candy and not necessary

  33. Andrew

Snow scenery is probably going to be only the snow rally stages. I doubt PD would have the time to build an engine to accumulate snow on the sides of the road as you race.

    1. SigmaViper11

black ice would be an awesome though scary and annoying bonus if they did implement snow across all or most tracks.

    1. the stig

he said rain and snow affects a cars performance!
how can you imagine this in photomode?
      stop talking nonsence

  34. wakkaoaka

clearly its a mistake :p he meant to say November 2nd. Unless it’s been out since february 2nd 2010 xD

  35. Soulfighter

He also said “…of this year” which is obviously a mistake. …unless that interview was shot in January 2011.

    1. OmnipotenceZERO

“was shot in january 2011”??? u live in da future or what…u meant January 2010…rite? lol everyones makin mistakes

    1. Tim

Thats exactly what i was thinking , and also i dont know if its me but there were a few intresting glitches in his words aswell since we have been told 1000 cars but yet he said 950.

Gamescon will hopefully finally give the EU date which according to everyone is looking like the 5th as it is a friday and new games tend to come out on a friday.

    1. Häka Mikanen

GT5 being a simulator, does it really make sense to have snow available at locations which never normally have snow?

    2. tyl0r_r

      @Elie

nothing’s preventing somebody from taking a Nascar and driving it on a non Nascar track in real life. If the car owners and track owners are cool with it it’d be fine.

it doesn’t snow like that at Daytona, ever, because that is nature and nobody can change it.

      two things are quite different.

    3. Peterjford

      @tyl0r_r
There are these machines that can make snow. They use them all the time around LA, where it never snows. So, yes it is possible to have snow at Daytona… man made snow, but snow.

    4. magic ayrton

The feature could be turned on or off.. so why not have it on every track… deep forest in the snow.. could do some serious drifting in a suitably four wheel drive car.

    1. ICEMAN_ZIDANE

what snow ? omg I really can’t find any words for this feature
Snow on Rally tracks would be awesome but on race tracks it would be a very bad idea

I think we understood anything wrong because i don’t think that GT make snow on normal race tracks (that would be something like ridge racer XD )
In real life there is no snow race (that means in GT5 we will have not snow on race tracks
In real life there is snow in Rally races that means in GT5 we will have snow in Rally races ….XD

    2. ICEMAN_ZIDANE

and maybe this is a old video because he said more then 900 cars (PD officially said +1000 cars) and he said febuary 2nd this year …

    3. FlareKR

The title scared me a bit; I thought the rain snow and spectator mode were all faked. Last time I had that scare was about the Citroen GT canceled reading it as “GT Canceled”. Good finds Jordan, and sorry for your loss.

    4. caasimun

GTPSP>> the rims move in sync with the rpm of the car…i just found that out after watching over 38 replays.

    5. caasimun

btw wats the need of having snow in a place where there has never been snow…or like have rain in…….nvm
