Testing information: This test is performed on the Hong Kong city course in it's "normal" direction. The test cars were purchased and the only modifications before first practice were an oil change and tire change. All cars came stock with Racing:Super-Hard (R1) which I replace with Racing:Medium (R3), a standard race tire for me. Minor changes were done between practices, mainly adjustment of the Auto-Level on the transmission, Brakes, and a few standard suspension tweaks. No major changes and not all cars are set the same. All cars ran 3 practices and 1 Family Cup race.
Cars Tested: Looking at the cars with the (JGTC) designation, I noticed a smaller sub-class of cars. Maybe it's a different group that runs with the Supra's, NSX's, and others, that I'm not sure of. At 500,000 credits compared to 1,350,000 and with less HP, I'd think this is the case. Whatever they are, there are six of these cars.
1. ASL Arta Garaiya (JGTC) '03
2. RE Amemiya Asparadrink RX-7 (JGTC) '04
3. Cusco Advan Subaru Impreza (JGTC) '03
4. Toyota Wedssport Celica (JGTC) '03
5. Toyota Superautobacs Apex MR-S (JGTC) '00
6. Nissan C-West Razo Silvia (JGTC) '01
All cars priced at 500,000 credits. All cars listed in showroom at 295HP, which is not the case. All stock options are the same and purchasable upgrades are as well with one exception, the RX-7. With an oil change (50) and R3 tires (23,000), each car's total cost as tested comes to 523,050 credits (NA). Let's look at the real numbers after purchase. HP is listed differently according to where you look. Just to stick to a standard, I'm going to look at two numbers, the garage listing (GL) and the garage viewing (GV). The listing is when you've first entered your garage and you're looking at your cars as a "list" and the viewing is when you've selected a car from this list and are "viewing" it like in the showroom.
Pre-Oil Change
GL(GV)
1. Garaiya 323(319)
2. RX-7 324(319)
3. Impreza 316(312)
4. Celica 311(307)
5. MR-S 305(301)
6. Silvia 301(297)
Post-Oil Change
GL(GV)
1.Garaiya 340(335)
2. RX-7 340(335)
3. Impreza 332(327)
4. Celica 327(322)
5. MR-S 320(316)
6. Silvia 316(312)
The equality these cars shared in the showroom pretty much stayed in the showroom. This "equality" is even further distorted when you look at the weights. At 1150kg, the Silvia tops the list. Drop down to 1125kg and you'll find a pair, the Garaiya and the MR-S. Both of these are MR drivetrains, all others are FR, just another difference. Weighing in at 1100kg is another pair, the RX-7 and the Impreza. Finally, the Celica weighs in 1050kg, the lightest of the bunch. Let's look at P\W Ratios now:
1. Celica --3.216
2. RX-7 --3.234
3. Garaiya --3.313
4. Impreza --3.316
5. MR-S --3.513
6. Silvia --3.635
These numbers were taken after the oil change.
Now that we have that information out of the way, let's look at future upgrades. The only upgrades available to all cars are Stage 3 and Stage 4 Turbo, a roll-cage stiffening, NOS, and tires. The RX-7 has an NA Stage 3 upgrade also available. Using the post-oil change numbers, this is what those turbo upgrades will give you:
1. Garaiya-- Stage 3- 340hp --> 445hp -- Stage 4- 340hp --> 511hp
2. RX-7 -- Stage 3- 340hp --> 471hp -- Stage 4- 340hp --> 654hp
3. Impreza-- Stage 3- 332hp --> 447hp -- Stage 4- 332hp --> 609hp
4. Celica -- Stage 3- 327hp --> 446hp -- Stage 4- 327hp --> 622hp
5. MR-S -- Stage 3- 320hp --> 400hp -- Stage 4- 320hp --> 519hp
6. Silvia -- Stage 3- 316hp --> 429hp -- Stage 4- 316hp --> 600hp
**The Stage 3 NA Tuning for the RX-7 takes it from 340hp-->442hp.
We're now a long way from seeing six cars in showrooms all listed at 295hp and all costing the same.
Let's see what they'll do on the track.
Hong Kong, normal, three 5-Lap practices. First run stock, 2nd and 3rd practices with minor adjustments.
Hong Kong, normal, Family Cup. For the family cup, I changed the difficulty of the races with each car, from Difficulty 2-7, but I don't believe the other cars ever really factored in much on the times ran.
Practice\Family Cup
1. Garaiya-- 1'22.494\ 2'59.488
2. RX-7-- 1'23.187\ 2'56.525
3. Impreza-- 1'22.886\ 2'57.310
4. Celica-- 1'22.370\ 2'56.621
5. MR-S-- 1'24.150\ 3'01.640
6. Silvia-- 1'25.489\ 3'05.409
The order I ran the cars is the reverse of this list, the Silvia first and the Garaiya last. Running against a "ghost" affected each car differently. Some cars seemed to always be ahead of the ghost and some seemed to be fighting it the entire time. The RX-7 in particular could have had a better time if I hadn't had problems with the ghost. Not an excuse, just giving you the information. I enjoyed driving all the cars and my plan is to take this test further at some point by running the Hong Kong race in the All Japan series against the big boys of the JGTC. It may take a Stage 3 Turbo HP upgrade and some more detailed tuning for me to actually be able to run with those guys, but that's another test. I'll wrap this up by saying that I enjoyed driving all of these cars and that anyone who likes the JGTC cars should have some fun with any of them.
