The Lancer is so much easier to drive on CS tires. I'm guessing the suspension is too soft for SM.

Had to stop and get rest, but if anyone wants to practice later, just post in here and I'll try to open another room.

That goes for a lot of the road cars. Stock tires are usually the ones that feel the best, are more realistic and easier to drive.

EDIT: The thread has reached 5000 pages. Quite the milestone. Off to another 5000 !

I wonder why we're complicating things with road cars. Why not race them on stock tires ? Especially as we race those cars in their stock form. High grip doesn't mean easier to drive, quite the contrary in most cases.

I thought maybe it was for ease of use and accessibility but let's be honest, most of the time going up a tire compound or two makes a stock car so much more twitchy and harder to drive.

Personally, I'd switch to racing road cars on their stock tire that would simplify everything. We rarely had good close racing with weird and twitchy handling road cars on slicks anyway. Furthermore, going by HP alone can be misleading. Case in point, the two Lexus V8 coupes, the LC and the RC F with 470 hp will move from SM with the current formula to SS and they were already a tire compound too high. Other case, the 68 Charger we raced last week would be on SS tires now which will make it even harder to drive because the suspension cannot take that much grip from the tires.

With that said, I'll open a practice lobby around 7:00 PM tonight, everyone welcome.

Hopping on the tyre feedback bandwagon here because I tend to agree with @Worst_Driver. I genuinely believe that we're making it harder for beginners/amateur drivers by moving up tyre compounds.

I don't think this is the case for racecars though. Some of the GT3s are genuinely harder on RH than RM/RS. Without downforce though, sticky tyres on stock suspension doesn't provide a fun drive. Nor does it provide a good platform for learning lines and technique.

Good racing last night as usual, pretty good sized grid as well up to 9 drivers.

We were also discussing the new tire formula in the chat and seems like there's a willingness to try stock tires instead of going with the new proposal. To be honest, I thought those discussions were in the past with the most recent change which was not perfect but seemed to OK with most people. Now that the BOD is open to try something new, why not try stock tires and if people aren't satisfied we go back to the current one as simple as that. The new proposal is a step back and won't make the league more accessible, if anything it will make multiple cars harder to drive. Go try a Charger Hellcat on RH tires instead of the stock SH tires and tell me that it's easier to drive. Sure RH tires require a little bit less throttle control but it handles like crap and is twitchy as hell.

I think feedback from the people that race regularly should be taken into account. @Kgffy @A_Higher_Place @Buffalo_DRD @Nicktune

Perfect example was combo 1 this weekend. The car became very difficult to drive once the tires were upgraded from SH to SM and immediately received a large number of votes. Heck, the tires could have been downgraded to CS and still be much easier to drive compared to SM.

Edit: I'm all for KISS and go with stock tires vs a complex formula that would make some cars worse.

I am a bit stumped on where this change is coming from. Can't recall any comments or discussions being made since the current tire regulations were adopted. The only thing I can think of is the new 'proposed' version is Horsepower based instead of Performance Point based. This would certainly make some behind the scenes actions easier since PD like to tweak PP values every update. But a change like this should more closely reflect the current tire regulations. Putting road cars on Racing Tires too soon is what brought about the big discussion previously and led to the current regulations everyone seemed to be okay with.

The idea of running cars on the stock tires is the typical response I would expect from Division 1 drivers. I'd be surprised if the majority of lower division drivers agree with that. I do like the addition of Comfort Medium and Comfort Soft tires to the formula, not too happy to see the rush to get into the Racing tires though. I would think waiting until 700ish Hp to get into Racing Hard tires would be a better choice. There a simply too many road cars in the 500 Hp range that belong on Sport tires.
 
Over the last several months I've seen more than a few posts regarding how such and such car would be better on such and such tires. The current reg puts every road car on sport tires. That's 286 cars, on 3 types of tires.

@JamCar0ne is correct with his thinking that HP was chosen as the metric to use so we wouldn't be subjected to PD's penchant for changing PP update to update. While those changes may not always result in a tire change for any particular car, I've seen changes of over 30pp.

This will not change the current tire regulation model of any Gr.x, VGT and some select "Other" cars.

The proposed tire reg was intended as a starting point to try out and tweak over the course of the December season. We could just as easily use the below chart. It puts the largest chunk of the road cars on SH tires. The overall goal here is to approach some sort of balance between accessibility and realism. Putting a 30HP car on SHs is nowhere near that balance. Putting an 850HP car on SS is a little closer, since according to a recent study SS and above have friction coefficients made of magic fairy dust and stick to your ribs cheese.

Weirdly enough, I noticed the past few years that D2 votes out the slowest combo and replace it mostly with faster cars, both road cars and racecars, which I don't understand why as they are harder to drive fast and also to race close with one another because everything happens so much faster you risk more collisions and missed brake points before corners.

As for numbers, here's what I would go with if not going with stock tires.

SMs for anything over 500HP. That pretty much throws the accessiblity/realism balance into the south pacific. No the spreads do not have to be equal. They are currently for simplicity's sake.

500 hp cars aren't accessible to begin with. We could allow TCS and stability control in D2 or even in D1 to compensate instead of using unrealistic tires that mostly ruin the handling.
 
Just throwing a spanner into the mix here but... wasn't all of @Marcus Garvey 's testing completed literally right before the update that added Michelin tyre branding to all tyres? Are SS tyres still fake fairy dust post physic update?

Therefore the entire combo has been dropped from next week's line-up. Since @arethosetacos wins Prize A, they get to choose an entirely new car and track combo to replace it.

The round that received the second most elimination votes was:
Round 1 - Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII MR GSR '04 (SM) at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit - S02 Early Morning (9 laps)
This means either the car or the track will be replaced for next week's line-up. Since @A_Higher_Place gets Prize B, they have the option to freeze the car or the track, or they can give that option to the Prize C winner. If they give the freeze away, then they get to decide what car or track replaces the part of the combo that is left unfrozen by the Prize C winner.

Prize C goes to @JamCar0ne so they get whichever option the Prize B winner does not select.

Preliminary prize winners, please don't announce your prize selection until all incident reports have been filed and it has been confirmed that you don't have any penalties. It's also recommended that you review the SNAIL combo history and other data on our car and track history so that you can get an idea how many times we've raced each car and track. Please remember that originality is always appreciated, so picking cars and tracks that we've never raced is a plus (but not required). What's more important is that you thoroughly test any combo that you are considering before making it your official selection. For example, any car you select must not hit its rev limiter at any point during a race (even in the draft).

IMPORTANT: When posting your Prize A or Prize B selection, please list the complete in-game name of the car and/or track you are selecting. For example, if you want to choose the Integra Type R as your car selection, post "Honda Integra Type R (DC2) '98". If you want to select Monza for your track, post "Autodromo Nazionale Monza". Being specific helps us to update the lineup accurately and also helps avoid any confusion among the drivers. Also, please be sure to list the HP and Weight (LBS) of any car you select. For track selections, include the Preset Weather and the Time of the Day (e.g: S01 Afternoon) or else it will be left to default. Available settings can be found under Time/Weather Settings, when creating an online Lobby, after selecting your track.
