A NEW Chinese car brand with Swedish design and engineering credentials is on the cards for Australia as part of a global roll-out from 2018.

Called Lynk & Co, the sub-brand of Hangzhou-based Zhejiang Geely Holding Group – owner of both Geely Auto and Volvo Car Corporation – apparently will target mainstream western competitors such as Toyota, Hyundai and General Motors.

Using Volvo’s new CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform that will underpin the new-generation Volvo V40 hatch, S40 sedan and XC40 SUV due in the next year or two, the Lynk & Co range is expected to slot between the entry level Geely line-up available in some markets, including China, and premium-segment Volvos available globally.

Years in development, Lynk & Co is due to be formally announced on October 20 according to a flashy but limited teaser website dedicated to the brand that, if images on the site are any guide, appears to be designed to appeal to a hip, connected generation of car buyers – hence the Lynk moniker.

Further details, including a potential car-sharing program, are expected to be spelled out at media events at Geely/Volvo’s joint vehicle development base in Gothenburg, Sweden, within weeks.

Chinese media reports suggest a compact SUV code-named CX11 will be the first Lync & Co vehicle off the Geely production lines. Such a vehicle has been spotted under test on Chinese roads.

However, GoAuto understands three Lynk & Co models based on the CMA platform are being readied for western markets, including Australia where distribution is set to be established by a factory controlled operation.

Geely put a toe in the water in the Australian market via West Australian-based Chinese Automotive Distributers – owned by Perth car dealer John Hughes – which sold the Geely MK light car in WA from 2010 to 2013.

Plans to roll out more models were shelved when the next car in the queue – the EC7 small sedan – scored only three stars in in-house NCAP testing.

At that point, it was decided to wait for Volvo-based models to come on stream to ensure solid safety and environmental credentials.

Geely’s design director Peter Horbury – a former head of design for Volvo and Ford North America – told Britain’s Auto Express in April that Geely was already working on cars due for Europe in 2018.

“The first car will be an SUV and it will be on a platform we have shown before,” he reportedly said.

Most pundits expect Lynk & Co models to employ Volvo’s new 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that will also slot into the V40 and its siblings.

Like Volvo models, top-of-the-range Lynk & Co cars can be expected to get a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain.

It is unclear if Lynk & Co models will have an Aisin-sourced automatic transmission – like the newly launched Volvo S90 – or the Australian-engineered, Chinese-built DSI (Driveline Systems International) unit used in Geely cars in China and export markets, mainly in developing regions such as South America, Africa, Russia and its satellites, and the Middle East.

However, the cars will almost certainly be built in China for both Chinese domestic and export markets to keep costs down.

GoAuto has been told that right-hand-drive variants have been planned from the outset – a concept backed up by Mr Horbury who confirmed that the UK market was in the plans.

In Australia, Lynk & Co will become one of a flock of Chinese brands looking to establish a foothold. These include SAIC Motor’s MG that is about to reveal a three-model range this month.

It's not specifically for the Australian market, it's planned to be a worldwide brand. The article 05XR8 posted is Australia-centric, understandably as it's an Australian website (no surprise, 05XR8 is one of the most provincial posters in this section of the forum), and it gives little specific information about Lynk&Co's plans beyond Australia.

A NEW teaser for the fledgling Chinese-owned car brand Lynk & Co reveals that its first offering will be the “most connected car to date” with the company promising to shake up the automotive industry.

The first offering from Lynk & Co will be revealed on October 20 European time, possibly on social media platform Snapchat, and judging by the teaser, it is set to be a small crossover with unprecedented connectivity.

As previously reported, Lynk & Co is owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, which also owns Chinese automotive giant Geely Auto and Volvo Car Corporation.

It is expected that Lynk & Co will sit between Geely, which is likely to remain a Chinese market only proposition for now, and Volvo, which is pushing further into the premium segment.

Highlighting its focus on connectivity and its blatant desire to attract younger buyers, Lynk & Co used social media shopping site Tictail to release the teaser and reveal a little more about the brand itself.

A short video shows a covered production car, which then morphs into a tablet then a bicycle and followed by a cloud, emphasising that the brand will employ a “share-based business model”.

“With Lynk & Co, we have created something bigger than just a car,” said Lynk & Co chief digital officer David Green. “We have created a digital platform for new thinking, for sharing and for collaboration, where only the imagination and creativity of all the bright minds out there will set the limits for how we can improve the use of cars and the experience of mobility.”

The brand, which is described as a mobility company, says in the release that it aims to change how things have been done in the automotive sector.

“The car industry spins in circles by doing the same things over and over. Rules and conservative values stand in the way of evolution. We know this, because this is where we come from,” the release says.

“Now we have decided to end the game of ‘follow the leader’.

“On October 20 we will launch Lynk & Co – a new car brand that will evolve in the hands of its users and push the limits of the car industry.”

Little is known about the brand’s first car, but it is likely to be underpinned by Volvo’s all-new CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform that will also for the bases of a number of new Volvo models, including the next-generation V40 hatchback and the mooted XC40 crossover.

The platform is also confirmed to be used for future Geely products.

Lynk & Co says the new model will be built on an open digital platform and feature “collaborations with several world-leading tech companies”.

Lynk & Co senior vice president Alain Visser, who is also senior vice president marketing, sales, services and PR at Geely Auto, said it was time for the automotive sector to be shaken up.

“In the car industry, for a century we have been so preoccupied by refining our product and production processes that we really haven’t looked beyond the trees and asked ourselves whether this is really the answer to people’s needs,” he said.

“To a large extent we have ignored the difference between the car as a mechanical product and the comprehensive experience.

“Time has changed. We live in the connected world and in that world, the heart of a car is not the engine. It’s the connectivity.”

As reported, Lynk & Co is on the cards for an Australian rollout in about 2018 with right-hand-drive production planned from the beginning.

The first car under the new brand is an SUV called the 01, which will be followed by 02, 03 and so forth. The car and the brand launch at an event in Berlin Thursday, but Geely chose to focus on how the new brand will be different from other car brands (though it does share some similarities with Tesla).

Another important feature of Lynk & Co cars is sharing. The owner will be able to share a "digital lock" that gives access to the car with family, coworkers and friends, and set a "share" time when they can use the car.

So what about the car itself? Geely says all Lynk & Co cars will be "electrified," which likely means "hybrid," and very fuel-efficient, but that's pretty much all we know about the 01's engine. The company also claims the cars will be very safe; the 01 will sport safety technologies like Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Autonomous Emergency Brake (AEB) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), to name a few. The car is based on Geely's new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which it will share with upcoming Volvo and Geely cars.

Design-wise, it's a handsome crossover that perhaps has more in common with the Porsche Cayenne than the Volvo SUVs. It's got more techy details than most cars in the segment; head of Lynk & Co design Andreas Nilsson says it was designed to appeal to "extremely tech-savvy" users, whose smartphone is an "integral part of their lives."

Inside, taking a cue from Tesla, the dashboard is dominated by a large touchscreen. It's techy and handsome, but entirely in line with the modern, luxury cars of today.

The Lynk & Co 01 will first become available in China in 2017, followed by a launch in Europe and the U.S. There's no word on the price, but Geely claims that — thanks to its distribution model that doesn't need traditional car dealerships — the 01 will be very competitively priced.
 
The 01 looks like a Juke and a Cayenne got it on and one smoked while pregnant.:yuck:

The 02 on the other hand looks pretty good.
 
They kept it simple. Old school air vents, minimal buttons on the dash(ironically un-Porsche like), up to date wheels and the color detailing of the front to back sash. It'll attract the right buyers for sure.
 
The 01 looks like a Ferrari 612 mated with a Kia Sportage!

The O2 looks like a Fisker Karma with a body kit.
 
I just came back from a walk to the grocery store. Kia Sportages, CX-5s, RAV4, Jeep Compass, CX-3, Foresters, Holden Captiva, Nissan X-Trails. Those were the most seen of the CUVs(Hyundai, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Ford owners must still be asleep).

If the 01 is priced right(and maybe if unforeseen recalls can be kept to a minimum) I see no reason it won't have a following.

Colour choices should be interesting. The new Suzuki Vitara Turbo is doing the MINI & Land Rover different colour roof thing. If this interior is anything to go by, should be pretty slick indeed.

It's certainly an interesting approach. Car-sharing programs are big here; I don't know if this would offer an appealing stand-in for them, or not.

Shame the company name sounds like some sort of mid-range, strip-mall men's accessory store.

It's almost like Aldi selling cars.
 
If this works out with the millenials, then I expect to see the Waldorf and Statler model aimed at the grouchy older gentleman.
 
Where's the "Kill it with fire" gif when you need it? :ill: The 02 is okay, but my God the mating pair for that 01 would be a horrid sight to watch. :crazy:
 
This is a car site, so some of you might want to know that the Lynk 01 we saw at the launch packed Volvo's as-yet-unannounced 180-hp three-cylinder turbo and an electric motor for a combined output of 220 horsepower. It also had a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox and a four-link rear suspension, while future Lynks will employ twist-beam systems as well. That's some pretty advanced stuff, though Geely doesn't think its intended customers—young, stylish people who don't have a lot to spend—will care about chassis details.

Maybe disinterested shoppers will buy $30 shaving cream and pick up a copy of Men's Journal of Social Inadequacy.
 
It looks part Cayenne(lights), Golf(grill, front bumper), Jetta(silhouette), Audi(rear). Overall, not bad for breaking into the industry.
