Sony Computer Entertainment has started production on the previously announced 65nm CELL processor. All PlayStation 3 units so far have a 90nm processor inside, but this will change soon. As it seems Sony has started the massproduction of the 65nm processor, and this will have a few advantages.

First of all, this will mean a price cut for Sony on every PlayStation 3 sold. This is because the 65nm CELL processor is cheaper than the 90nm processor.

And second, this means a heatreduction for the PlayStation 3.

Also this 'new' processor is not only for the PlayStation 3, it's will also be used for more Sony or Toshiba products.

Whether this new 65nm processor will be in all PlayStation 3 units at the European launch is unknown. We expect Sony to announce this in the coming months. Don't expect a price drop though, because Sony will still lose a lot of money with this 'new' processor.

Fixed :)

No price cut. reduced production cost doesnt instantly mean price cut. Intel is working on 45nm as we speak.

65mn Cell, 65nm RSX, 100% fully emulated ps1/ps2 games eliminating the EE/GS chip and lower ram costs then we can see a price drop that doesn't hurt Sony's pockets.

And the 65nm one goes faster than the 90 or no?
No.

The only difference will be cost and heat output. The heat output is too small a difference, however, to really make a large fuss about, especially with the engineering that Sony has employed with the PS3.

But, this only means that it will cost Sony less to make the PS3, not that we will see a price cut. It's definately possible that Sony will package a game with the PS3, but don't expect it to be an awesome one. I'd expect Sony to offer up a PS3 package in the coming holiday season that comes either with pre-loaded full games on the HDD (from the PLaystation Store) or some sort of goodies (headset / remote / movie).

In fact, I'd see it completely possible that Sony offers up a PS3 packaged with Spiderman 3 on Blu-Ray a month before it hits standard DVD.

But I don't expect to see a Price drop before this time next year. This time next year, however, Sony will likely have figured out how to emulate PS1/PS2 games via PS3 hardware, and the EE/GS will be removed, as well as the 65nm Cell and RSX. The next step in cost reduction will be the Blu-Ray drive, and Sony will absolutely HAVE to get those diodes down in cost, if they do, then we can definately expect a $100 price drop.
