Hey all,

Does anyone actually drive with ABS off? Just wondering as I see a lot of people mentioning they drive "with all aids off, except ABS 1".

I do the same myself, however yesterday I decided to give it a go without ABS. I used a 512BB (stock), and ran it around Monza. My initial reaction was "this is undrivable!" (it would spin as soon as I so much as looked at the brakes).

I changed the brake balance (ultimately to 4/1), which made it possible to actually take a corner. Still, saying it's a handful is a gross understatement...

I've also seen some claims that ABS does more than just simulate ABS, but rather acts as some sort of stability management.

So I'm wondering... is ABS off a valid option for some? (talking "normal" setups here, so stock sports/supercars on their standard tires)

Is ABS in-game a realistic representation of ABS in a real car? Assuming the 512BB didn't come with ABS, is this how the car would actually handle?

The ABS in this game is not a very good representation of how a real car's ABS operates.
There is no skitter in the tires or any type of cues that ABS has activated.
The ABS in this game acts as a 100% efficiency driving aid that never fails unless you're in the Jay Leno tank car or something with really powerful brakes.
IRL, the pedal would be kicking back and there would be an audible brake "grind" or tire skitter.
They dropped the ball on ABS implementation, sadly.

This thread has been done before several times. Yea I drive with ABS off if the real-life car didn't have it installed. I actually research which cars had ABS and which ones did not. If you want to experiment with turning it off, make sure you also turn off your brake balancer (make it 0/0 instead of 5/5). This keeps brakes from locking-up too early.

I know this much, if you turn off the ABS for the Nascar challenges under the Special Events your car goes much faster, I don't know why but it is true.

it acctually is pretty realistic because it shows you the hurtful dangers of braking during a corner but in some ways its unrealistic and thats why I still keep mine at 1 lol

I've driven the entire game without ABS. I balance each car to 5/2 braking and they're all perfectly controllable, you just need some skills and a light foot.

Never tried turning the balancer off though, sounds like suicide - will try it later.

Some cars yes, some no.
I find if I don't choose abs for something like a GT500 car I need to be very light and increase the braking zone.

Racing cars I've been turning it off regularly now. Slicks are more forgivable in that respect once you set the bias and pressure right. Some road cars I've been turning it off for fun. I think sometimes it makes the car more "predictable" as the ABS doesn't second guess me. But some cars are really tricky to drive without it....

I keep ABS 1 because I've tried with ABS off and if i even breathe on the brake pedal on my DFP the brakes lockup.

I always try to turn it off, and adjust brake balance. Usually 3/1 or 3/2 for slow cars, 5/2 or 5/3 for faster ones, and 6-10/2-4 for race cars.

It definitely makes it harder, and perhaps slower, but also more fun :) And I use a G27.

In some races brake balance adjustment is unavailable. In a few cases I have given in and set ABS=1. But I always try without first. The AMG SLS challenges I do without ABS, with fixed balance 5/5. Doable but a little harder.
