I've been fighting these darn things for months. I have Ad-Aware and Spybot and they do a pretty good job, but there's still an annoying browser hijacker on IE6 that won't go away. Can I reinstall IE6, perhaps? Should I get another browser? How can I stop it once and for all?
 
One way you can stop it is by using another broser like Firefox / Opera. I dont think you can reinstall IE6, but i will look into it for you. :)
 
Hey, I've just installed Firefox. The warning messages are a bit annoying, but there aren't any pop-ups yet. Which is good.
 
Just though I'd jump in quickly instead of making a new thread, does anyone know how much a problem the WinFixer 2005 pop up is?

It's a oretty persistent pop up (brings up exrta windows even when you click on the cross) and usually occurs after my little sis has been on Neopets with IE.
 
I would disregard that post Flame-returns made. Spy Catcher Express uses ActiveX to do it's scanning, while in-process opens up a nice doorway to some selective spyware for it's sister companies. Tenebril advertises for friends.
 
From what I can see SCE's deep scan detects much more than Spybot and Ad-Aware combined, my only problem is SCE places some very odd things in its suspicious list (my bluetooth dongle for example).
 
You should always have more then 2 or 3 programs to remove adware and malware. Plus have a good virus checker, like AVG. Or even have 2 to be on the safe side.

Always do a check once or twice a week, and keep your firewall, adware and malware removers. And Anti-Virus software updated mate.
 
Its easy, use Mozilla Firefox and Spyware Doctor, you wont have any problems with it again. I have been useing Spyware Doctor for the last year, never had a problem. Firefox, cant say much about it except it pretty much blows IE away.

Talk about overkill. You truly don't need tons of software for spyware removal. It's simply unnecessary. A licensed copy of Pest Patrol will pick up anything you could think of, by Malware, Adware, Keylog-ware standards. I've used every software mentioned in this thread so far, and none have performed as well as eTrust's. So, go ahead, use your 3+ removal programs, waste your resources. :rolleyes:

So let's say a customer brings a computer in, do you know how many times a single program has removed every manifistation of spyware/adware on a computer? Or even two? Never. Not one time. It takes 4+ and manual scanning to completely remove all adware. And yes, I've tried eTrust's program several times.

Two virus scanners is a bit insane, they'll have adverse effects on eachother, just one decent AV should do.

I've used just one for almost 8 months, and have not had negative feedback yet. Seems to work just fine.

For normal upkeep, perhaps, but for removing adware/spyware from a known infected computer, you're going to need more than that.

You mentioned help desk as a profession. I'm a network administrator. I deal with those "known infected computers" for a living, bud. :D

That's wonderful.

Computer repair business. I deal with an average of 2 highly infected computers a day.
 
I will definitely second that. Was at my bud's PC sales store today (MilwaukeePC) and he had an old couple come in and ask what "this" was. "this" was a mouse. :D I almost crapped my pants.
 
Today I tried Windows Antispyware. And its very good. I scanned with Ad-aware and Spybot before I tried Antispyware. They didn't scan much. However, Antispyware detected loads of Adware (Though it failed to remove the browser hijacker in IE) and even gave helpful descriptions of each. Excellent!
 
Today I tried another Anti-spyware utility: Webroot Spysweeper. I downloaded the free-scan version, and its even better than the others. Unfortunately, it won't delete anything unless I pay for subscription. Sigh...

I NEED TO BUY SPYSWEEPER! :banghead:
