What in the world separates these two cars? They are both very light rear wheel drive cars. It seems so many people like the AE86, but most people hate the Miata. Why?

The miata even has more power. 170hp vs. 127hp or so. And im sure the miata has a higher top power potential.

Is it just because there is an anime and manga series based on the AE86? That seems very superficial.

I like the AE86 as well, its fun to drive. But i think it oversteers way too much. Just as a car can understeer too much, I think one can oversteer too much. Its very hard to get the car to make grip. If you turn the car too sharp the rear steps out and you find yourself trying to tuck it back in. But if you get it tucked back into place you find yourself understeering into the wall.

You can even compare the Miata to the Shigeno version if you would like.

As someone who has real life experience driving these two cars at/beyond their limits, I can say that I prefer the driving experience of the Miata overall. But the AE86 is very good for its time, and is oodles more practical than the Miata.

No stock Miata has 170hp, except possibly that turbo version I've heard about in Australia.

AE86s had 112hp in the US, Miatas ranged from about 110-115hp in the early years up to a rated 155hp in the current model.

I voted for both. Not really fair to compare them when the Miata is a pure sports car that came out over 5 years later than the Corolla-based, practical AE86.

Myn says neither, it doesn't have a both option...:odd:

oops maybe i should have. you can still vote for both though, but no one will know you mean both.

im sorry cudaman, i guess i meant 160 or 155. in the game i think it says 160hp. and i just made this thread because a lot of people are trash talking the miata saying its worse than a vitz, meanwhile so many people praise the AE86.

I wasn't trying to jump down your throat or anything, I was just saying that the comparison between the two cars isn't really fair when you take into account what they are. You know, apples and oranges and all that stuff. :)

http://www.autoweb.com.au/cms/A_1409/article.html - Bit over 200, actually.

I would concur with your sentiments though - the Miata is a specially designed sports car, the AE86 a sedan based coupe, and there is over 5 years difference in the technology.

no problem, point taken. i think comparing any two cars are comparing apples to oranges, so maybe i am asking which car is faster. i dont know.

AdvanR,I assume you were expecting me to be all over this to,eh?hehe, well,I've already voted, and obviously it was for the AE86 ^_^!the first car I EVER bought (referring to my first data for GT3) was the Miata, and it was lightweight, good top speed, pretty good handling as well...but when I won the red AE86 with my Miata,I thought that the AE86 sucked and looked crappy 0_o,right now,on this day,I STILL can't believe why I judged it like that. Now I think the AE86 rules over that Miata I bought, and it turns better too ^_^,well...if ya wanna get into drifting, then yeah,I'd probably still beat my Miata, but that's just my words =D

Now that's the correct side of the car to drive on.

so you like it better because its a good drifter? fair enough. i think the ae86 is a good drifter too, but prefer the miata for going fast.

i said it was fast for the reason that it has good handling and its light. its lack of power is overcome by this. and if you tune the engine than it all of a sudden becomes more fast.

Well, i like the miata personally, and sitting in one at the motor show sure made me think so...nice interior, very smooth looking, but there is a big gap in the technology...:| But still i think the old Miata i still prefer over the AE86.

Miata. Nicer and I found it easier to get through the same events the the AE86 can enter - easier. I love my 304hp Miata in my garage at the moment.

304 bhp? How'd you get that much out of a Miata? Turbo stage 2?

I found the miata to be a much easier car to start with seeing as how it had more power to begin with. Also could be tuned to more power and handled (in my opinion) better than the AE86. The nice thing about the AE86 is that it is so cheap and you can really hop it up to begin with. Its also the best car to use for the begginer 80's race. It makes it really pretty easy and once you get the RX7 from it you have a heck of a car to play with from there. I have to say that both cars are basically throw aways once you get some cash together. Anyway of the two i would have to say the Miata is the better of the two for racing.
