Any thought on the recent sniper attacks?

Do you have any thoughts on the recent sniper attacks in Maryland and Virginia? I think the person doing this needs to be stopped because taking the life of an innocent person is wrong. I also think that he is a coward. He is taking shots at people from long range and then running away. And when he shot the 13 year old boy, now that was just to much. The boy still has his whole life ahead of him. This experience will leav him emotionally scarred for the rest of his life...or atleast I think he will be...

Err. They aren't going to catch him.

I agree with that...if the targets are truely random...I think it would be good if they did though. I think all this sutff about the white vans and box trucks are a waste of time, if you heard gun shots, wouldn't the first thing you would do is get the hell out of there?

he used a left handed bolt action rifle.. i think its a winchester... i thought they were talking about it on the news... if i recall correctly it was a winchester

How's they find out what exact gun he/she was using?

Did he forget to take it with him/her?

I agree with klos, but only, they wont find him if he stops right now. If he keep going, then they will eventually catch him.

The whole white van thing is a bunch of crap i think. the sniper could very well being using it against the police. The sniper sits and wait till a white van drives by, and fires off a round. people look for the gun man, see a white van leaving and think its the sniper.

How can they tell it was a left handed rifle? Unless left hand guns spin the bullet a different way. I heard on the news that the bullet used was an .223 round, used in common hunting rifles, Colt AR-15, and the civilian version of the M-16A2.

They said something about him only shooting like 150 yards. That tells me one thing...he's a bad shot. Those sniper rifles can kill from a long ways away.

He's a psycho

Err, good reasoning.

How do "they" come up with these asinine figures like he shot from only 150 yards away?

Is there any possible way to calculate this?

left handed firearms only differ in the breech - the bolt is on the left hand side and the bullets are put into the chamber from the left hand side. the muzzle grooves go in the same direction.

Even it it could be determined that it was a left-handed gun, how could the police be sure he/she wasn't ambidextrous and/or trying to fool them [probably very easy]?

I dont want to comment.. Im sure what i say will just get people mad at me, so i better just keep my trap shut.

I'd like to talk to nascarnut.

A 150 yard shot and a kill with one shot on a civilian model rifle is very impressive. Unless he's using a scope. with a scope, it's not too tough. Open sights are another story.

He's had some training, as I don't think one nutcase, can purchase an AR-15, sit in his van and pick off people at 150 yards.

I've watched snipers take a person down with one head shot at 950 yards. That is impressive. But you've also got to figure that they were using a very precise weapon, that they were very intimate with the workings, and operation. could an average joe like you pick up a Sniper rifle and drop someone at 150 yards? Yes, without even trying. Could you pick up a hunting rifle, and drop someone at 150 yards, 8 out of 10 shots? That'd be tough.

This man has not lost sense of reality. He understands his getaway plan, his surroundings, he chooses his targets and he knows when to turn tail and run. He also understnads terror. How many people were too scared to go out? Think about the statistics...5 million+ people, 9 killed. You've got pretty good odds at coming home alive.

Do I think he sick? Yes, absolutely. Do I think he'll be caught? he could get two or three more people, and fade away to obscurity, and then pop up three years from now get three more, and then fade away again.

My fear is that he's wearing a turban, and there are others out there preparing to follow his example. New York City is a prime place. Boston, Miami, Houston, LA...anyplace that has a gas station or a shopping mall close by a freeway entrance, or a major route.

The best we can do is keep our eyes open, and notice everything around us.

They said that the bullets he chose to use are not the most accurate for his gun. He uses bullets that are used by terrorists. The bullets are more likely to do more damage than kill. It hits the bone, bounces off and gets lodged someplace else. Everyone is thinking that he's gonna lie low for a while and when everyone is in a false sense of security, he's gonna make his move.
I seriously hope he doesn't have a turban on, because the muslim community here will be in trouble by stupid rednecks (rednecks are rampant here and in Fredricksburg). That's the last thing I want (me being muslim). I doubt that he'll go out side our area and maryland. It seems like he lives here in this area. He takes shots at planned out locations and he can easily get out in a hurry. My question is, what does he have to prove. What is his point. Or is he completely crazy and he doesn't know what he is doing. There are many questions to be answered, but next to zero clues. The cops need to get moving.

I think he's a complete nutcase. He's coward...its not hard to sit someplace in the woods and just pick people off. If he shot people from close range maybe 5 ft away he wouldn't be such a coward...but either way I wouldn't be impressed. People getting shot happens more often than people would like think it does. At my parents store in DC, within a 5 mile radius, atleast 6 people have been killed in the last 6 months. I hear gunshots very often at night when I'm there with my parents, but its not scary because I have gotten used to hearing them. That part kind of scares me, the fact that I'm around that kind of stuff all the time and are not even bothered by it anymore...

To Der Alta:

I was just saying that with a sniper rifle and a scope, at 150 yards, it wouldn't be too hard considering the accuracy of those rifles.

Not trying to start a war here. :)

This guy is completely insane, and knows exactly what he's doing - which is a good deal worse, as he's pretty much controlling the game. I think the white van may have been a ploy to knock the cops off the scent.

There's really not a lot the police can do - the only time this guy's vulnerable is when he's making a shot, and he knows it - he's covering his tracks very effectively. They need to catch a bit of a break, like him having an accident or running a red light on the way back from making a shot.
