Aspect Ratio Problem

I've got the following problem which irritates me a bit.

Im using a LCD screen with a max resolution of 1280x768, which is widescreen. So I figured i'd play GT3 in 16:9, but for some reasons, the cars just don't look right. They are either too narrow or too high enough.

When im playing in 4:3 it only looks good when I switch my tv mode to Normal, which cause 2 black bars on both sides of the screen. When I set the tv to Full in 4:3 it does fill up the screen, but now the cars are too wide for my idea.

After a bit of math I concluded that my tv isn't really 16:9 but it's 16:10.

4:3 = 1.33333
16:9 = 1.7777778
1280 x 768 = 16:10 = 1.666667

So I figured playing in 16:9 on my tv is closest too 16:10 and because of that, should look the best. But it doesn't for some reason. Playing in 4:3, but with my screen filled up completely, actually looks more real than playing in 16:9. But I don't understand why.

I know this might sound a bit confusing and all, so if nobody understands what im talking about, I'll try to explain it again later in a reply.

My question is, am I the only one experiencing this? I can't really imagine that, since there are loads of tv's with an 16:10 aspect ratio.

ok, i have a theory, but take it with a grain of salt perhaps. I'm no self-proclaimed electronics expert - infact, quite te opposite, i'm a mechanical engineering student.

if you ran your numbers a bit further, or simply looked at them, you would realize that by playing 16:9 on a 16:10 logically should make the graphics seem more cramped horizontally, or stretched vertically.
by doing so you have effectively reduced the ratio of the length to width by 6.25%.
(from 1 - 1.666667/1.777778). ie. if possible, the image would like to be displayed 6.25% wider than it is, for the height it is being displayed at on your monitor.
it cannot, however, so it crams everything into a narrower width, thus making it look silly

edit: perhaps it is more logical to look at this, assuming that the width is constant. then displaying it in 16:9 would leave space at the top and bottom of your 16:10 screen. To fill this void, the image is stretched vertically by an amount given by:
10/9 - 1 = 11%
 
nevermind the screens resolution... what is the screens ASPECT RATIO!? is it an actual widescreen? or 4:3?

i am playing gt3 on my crt with a VGA box and i am using 16:9... to ge the image to display properly i have to manually resize the image on the monitor to squish it down so that its not stretched. hope this makes sense. i dont know if u can do that on an lcd though.

It's just that when im playing at 4:3 and set my tv to "Normal Mode" (which adds the black bars to the side of the screen to create 4:3) the dimensions of the car look as they should. But when I play at 16:9 and set my tv to Full (which fills up the screen completely) It just looks not 100% correct. Im not sure if this happens on every widescreen tv, or just on mine.
 
what is the actual aspect ratio of your TV? the resolution doesnt mean anything because the pixels are NOT SQUARE! so if u go and measure the dimentions of your screen in inches u will see if its 16:9 or not also.. is there a way that you can stretch the tv picture on your TV? so that its squished more? can you add black bars on top and bottom?
 
oh one more thing.. to check if the picture is square .. go into replay mode and turn on the steering gauge ( the one that appears on the left that shows how ur steering) that should look like a perfect circle if it doesnt then u know your settings are off.
 
i'll add in here, that you should try setting your PS2 to display in 16:9 mode, and not the 4:3 mode (in configuration on the PS2 main screen - disk ejected). I'm unsure if you've actually done this or not because you've structured your question very poorly.
It's unclear to me if you're simply changing the display settings of the tv and keeping the same ones on the ps2, or changing them both simultaneously (as you probably should be). Maybe take some time and write out your question clearly, for everyone's benefit, as the two of us that have replied seem to be interpreting your problems differently that you had meant to have them expressed (by my judgement).

Ok.

First of all, you need to set your PS2 to 16:9. THis is done from the main setup menu on your PS2 with no disc in.


Then once you start GT3, you need to go into the GT3 options screen, and select 16:9 from the options menu. GT3 does not have the boot up flag recognition to set itself to 16:9, if the PS2 is set to 16:9. You have to do it manually. Once you set it though, and save, it will always be on.



Once youve dont that, the aspect ratio should be fine on your TV.
If you set the TV to normal 4:3 sidebar mode, the cars will be tall and skinny. And when you set it to full 16:9 mode, it will look proper.

If you dont understand a format (like 16:9 widescreen), dont know how it works, why it works, or how to properly set up your equipment to utilize it, you shouldent own it.

Im willing to bet that your DVD player is still set to 4:3 as well.


Seriously, jsut becuase your TV is widescreen, doesnt mean that everything going into it is automaticly "widescreen".


Im not even going to try to explain "animorphic" to you.
 
Infact, my dvd player is set to 16:9 ;)

When I measure my tv it's 50,4cm wide and 30 high, so that's 16:9.5 :P

Maybe I just went a bit crazy while switching between all the possible modes, happens when you buy a new tv. Seems like 16:9 is looking like it should afterall.
