Automatic or Standard

I was just wondering what you guys like to drive better standard or automatic, i just got my first car today and it's a standard, i had about a 2 hour training session with my dad this morning on how to drive it and i think i've already got it :D but i think that driving a standard is more fun, it's more of a challenge :D
 
Standard? Is that what you fullas call it?

Manual, does rule. Except when you have an underpowered car and let the clutch out at idle and stall it.

Anybody over 45 calls it 'standard' rather than 'manual.' Similarly, anybody over 24 calls it 'centigrade' rather than 'celsius' Don't ask me, we learned it as 'celsius.' It's those damn American kids with their inferior educations.

Anyway...

I've got two manual cars and two autos. I don't drive either auto car more than once a week, they're not mine (I just pay for them).
 
also i have a question for you experienced standard driver's out there, i still stall it sometimes when coming out of a complete stop, the way i come out of a complete stop from a stop sign is i let up on the clutch until the car starts to move slightly forward, then i press on the gas while continuing to let up on the clutch, but sometimes when i let up on the clutch and don't press the gas fast enough, it ends up in a stall, is there any other eaiser way to start out from a complete stop? any help is appreciated :D
 
When you stop, put the handbrake on.

When you're about to pull away, let the clutch out and push the gas until the car is pulling against the handbrake, then let the handbrake off when you want to move.

Thats how my instructor does it anyways.

I always give it a little gas while I'm letting the clutch out. Not a lot, though. Slowly bring the revs up while letting out on the clutch, and you shouldn't stall it as much.

Once you get the hang of it you can do it very quickly without even thinking about it.


Now, as for the topic of the thread...

I prefer my 4 speed auto GS300 for daily driving, and the 6 speed manual T/A WS6 for screwing around in.:lol: Daily driver - automatic
Screwing around - manual
 
Just learn where the they actually connect. I was taught how to drive a manual by stopping completely, and letting off the clutch verrry slowly until i got the car rolling without pushing the gas. Once i got the hang of that, just adding gas in there made it infinitely faster.
 
manual for me. never owned an auto in my life (i hate the things) i personaly think you can have have more fun with a manual such as heel & toe and i also feel more in control of the car

Manual seems a lot more fun, even though I've never driven before. It just looks fun throwing it out there like that. :)

Do you guys in the US learn to drive with automatic?

In here if you get your license with automatic that's the only transmission you're allowed to use so no manual boxes for those.

For me automatic is actually a harder one to drive. When braking I panic: "Where's the cluth!?!??" and I already have my hand on the gearstick but it never works.

For more economic drive use the gears to slow you down and jump over gears when accelerating like from 3rd to 5th or so...

I have got so far about 600-700km out of one full tank of fuel (45-50L tank)...
 
how would using gears to slow you down use less fuel? i would think the opposite. if you just pull it into neutral, then you are only idling, rather then being at whatever revs needed for the gear youre in.
 
And with the drive disengaged from the wheels, you lock up whilst braking... Brilliant plan. 0.01p petrol saved, £2000 replair bill from rear-ending the truck in front.

If you let the car free-wheel, or put it in neutral at any time whilst in motion, you WILL fail your driving test.
 
IRL I prefer a manual, straight-drive, stick-shift.
My wife keeps threatening me with 4-doors and an auto for my next car.:(
After all I'm getting older, and having problems with my knees...
Even on my worst day I can still drive the 'Scort.
I have a plan however. I can learn to live with 4-doors. Especially if they happen to be attached to a Subaru Legacy or WRX.:D

But, with her being smarter than me, I'll probably join the ranks of SUV drivers.:eek:
I'm starting to like the looks of the Chevy Trailblazer. And it will seat all the "troops".
 
My dad had 2 autos after he had his left hip done - he could still press the loud pedal, but not the clutch :D

Other than that, it's been manuals all the way... :D

Have a look at the Mazda 6 S if you're serious about a 4-door automatic. By far the best family sedan for sale; I've driven them all (I have no actual life, I go to car dealers and drive sedans).
 
I saw a bright yellow one at church today. Quite a nice ride.
My wife really wants an auto because the kids, who have the coordination to juggle a soccer ball for 100 touches, without it hitting the ground, can't seem to figure out how to modulate clutch and gas.
Like I want them driving my car.:irked:
 
when do you lock the brakes of your car? do you break that hard daily? or do you not have abs? you are have me baffled.

I usually just pull my car out of gear when stopping for a light because if i downshift and blip every gear i look like a dumbass ricer. im not going to be locking my brakes stopping for a light, sorry. Id rather replace my brake pads than my clutch.
 
For all out drag racing Id go with an ATX, just because they will always hit their predetermined shift point. Thatll give you consistency, which is what wins if you know what your doing.

For anything else, MTX is the way to go, I wish I could find a squential tranny for my GST.....:D
 
Lol..it usually depends on the car and the level of tuning..Because for ALL out drag racing...people do go manual..but it's 3-4 speed.....However some also go auto.....And as far as CARS go....An Automatic Twin Turbo Supra is quicker than a Standard (Six Speed)Twin Turbo Supra
