I have been getting a very annoying error in Bittorrent lately, I have been trying to get a distro of Linux or FreeBSD, however about halfway through, I get the message...
BitTorrent
"5.5-RELEASE-alpha-all" : data corrupted on disk - maybe you have two copies running?
Or similar, substituting "5.5-RELEASE-alpha-all" with the Distro at the time.

I have checked the running processes, and there is only 1 bittorent.exe process running, I have tried rebooting, I have tried everything I can think of. I am running WinXP Home SP2, and using Bittorrent 4.4.1. Does anyone have any ideas.

Disclaimer - The distribution packs that I am trying to download, are free packs, from the website of the developers, given as a free .torrent file, and free to download and use as a personal user.

How 'bout a different program?

Also checking on version numbers, 4.4.1 is for Macs, 4.20.9 is the current Windows version.

What other prgram would you suggest? Also, the current one is currently unavailable at the moment, I get the connection timed out blah blah blah crap.

How many different torrents have you tried downloading? Does it happen to every single one?

I have tried a few, and yes, it happens on every one

*checks*

I have tried 5

I am now using Azures, and 54.0%, no errors yet!

-edit-

Got the sucker, thats people, although, there was slight disagreement in terms of size...

Ok, Imagine a Jigsaw puzzle. Right, In BT it would be the file.

Well its made of a number of peices, One file could be made up of 10 peices, or 10000 peices, it just depends on the torrent. Which In BT would be the data you are downloading from the other seeders. Now imagine if one of those peices is well in a diffrent shape, and it wont fit, you would have an incomplete puzzle. With BT you would just redownload the peice, thus enabling you to have the complete file.

(i hope that wasnt too confusing)

In your case you just got a few bad peices and had to redownload them, nothing wrong there.

Yep, the hash check failed on some pieces. It's not uncommon to download more data than the actual size.

I'm not sure if Azureus does it, but some programs have the option to kick/ban clients who send you bad data.

Thanks for that, I had figured it out not long afterwards, but I wanted to see if there were any other causes. Basically what was happening, was my router was mangling a piece of one file, because the IP string just happened to match a string in the actual file, so a simple overnight shutdown of the connection, with the inherant IP change, fixed the problem. Thanks for your help guys, much appreciated. 👍
