So my sis wants a new car since she's selling the Acura.
She's set her soul on a M3 Convertible...good for her, I say...

Later today, she suddenly brings up this idea...."how about another car?" Another car!? This is the car she wants to split 50/"50" (meaning she gets it after spliting the cost.)
This is what she wants....
be prepared....

Either a E36 M3 Sedan or coupe.
I told her to get the sedan if she really wants to waste her money *hit* since she's got the conv. and I've got a coupe, so a sedan would be nice for family and friends.
She also wondered about the E39 M5 which I said is too much....*hit*.
Now to let you know...she has no clue about cars, and doesn't know what what E39 or E36 means....( )

So she's looking at
Either E36 M3 coupe or sedan
And (wishing) a E39 M5.

Note: Please don't ask why she wants a 3rd car. I don't know why, her b/f doesn't know why, she probably doesn't even know why. Just know I don't support the idea at all.

Man, life is hard, isn't it? :)

Seriously... giving her any of those cars without at least a proper advanced driving course is the epitome of stupidy.

Not to diss on your sis’ (bada-bam!), but she sounds like she’s got more money than sense. Tell her to get a Lexus GS or something like that – sporty enough (I’m assuming from your description that she’s not a 10/10ths kind of driver), while still having all the life-saving goodies (traction control and stabile-whatever and pre-braking-un-crashing-stuff and yada yada).

Yesterday I got stuck behind some b**** in her beamer yapping on her damn cell phone – hey girly, if you have a BMW, don’t clog up the fast lane at 60 mph!

An M3 isn't exactly a hardcore sports car, at least not to the point that your average driver is going to get in trouble with it.

no it's called..

Women drivers + nice cars don't mix..

Not your sister..

Give a woman a ferrari..

Pretty soon it'll be on 20 inch rims...
with fuzzy dice..

and then totalled..

and a woman behind the wheel of a m3 is a very very scary thing..
i'm sorry..
but i've been in the passenger seat of E46's driven by women enough to realize this..

Give a woman "lane change/passing power" and they're going to use it whenever they can..

because they are "INDEPENDANT" which means everything they do they feel is for the sake of women around the world..so they have to do it as best as possible....

-.-;;

I've seen quite a few M3 and 911 that got in the wrong hands and ended up in a very bad way.

Rwd car with that much power + low profile tyres + rain + novice driver = recipe for disaster.

Get her a an Audi TT or something...

I dunno, I see high powered RWD cars out all the time, and they aren't sliding and crashing into stuff constantly. I'm guessing that the majority of the drivers aren't pro race car drivers either.

If you spin an M3 the problem isn't the M3, it's that you were driving like an idiot. You could give my mom an M3, hell, you could give her a Viper, in the rain, and she could drive it around without trouble. You don't have to have incredible driving skills to drive a high powered RWD car, you just have to not drive like an idiot.

To spin a car like that, all you have to do is to lift off the throttle while the rear end is losing traction during a turn or an emegency manoeuver. A lot of people will have that reflex, not because they are idiots, but because they're inexperienced.

Electronic nannies greatly reduce risks for such mishaps, but they just were not as good as they currently are in the E36. There's a very good reason we don't see these out during the winter around here.

You would have to be going extremely fast around a corner to have the car oversteer just from lifting the throttle.

This is a mass produced BMW we are talking about here, they are very regularly sold to drivers who don't know a thing about driving fast, and most of them will never have a problem with them, because the most they are going to do is a full throttle run up to 60mph on a straight road.

I tend to agree with this. My aunt is a school secretary and she drives her husband's SRT10 to work almost every day (the shame of it! A Viper being made to commute  ) without any problems. I've seen a lot of accidents in cars with much MUCH less power than a Viper because the driver was a kid/jackass and just didn't realize what happens when you hammer a car. How much less power? Try "under 200 hp" in a FRONT WHEEL DRIVE. It's real easy. I've seen what happens when you give kids the keys to a 170hp Corolla... it's not pretty.

That said, I think the older M3s should be tractable enough if your sister drives like a granny... if she has even a hint of testosterone in her blood, though, another kind of car might be more prudent.

YeaH... Joke pictures. But 100% of the internet VIDEOS I've seen of cars being trashed are with MEN drivers. Oh... how about the Mustang Cobra going out of control on a straight road... or the MR2 that torque steers (!!!!) into a parking lot from a standing start... or the superbike into a tree (from a standing start)...

I see a lot of bad driving from careless women drivers, but a lot of accidents by MEN drivers who think they're pretty hot and should know better. That includes me, but I plead not guilty due to alcohol consumption.

joke pictures?

sorry..but the first one i took with my cell phone..

I had another pic of a nice new cayenne on it's side...
woman driver..

there's a durango in my schools lot driven by a woman with the bumper pushed in..

the funny thing is..

the video's are all of people trying to race..or do something stupid..

the women do it durring daily driving..

while say......talking on the phone

or are harried..and are putting makeup on on their way to work....

If you sister buys a BMW tell her to get a 3 series clubsport or a Z3.

There's no need to worry about her driving...its the choose that's the problem since my sis' learned to drive on the same old 944 Turbo S I learned on.

She's deciding between at least each of the 3 E36 M3s now, but I know we'll be getting one....

Although I do NOT want to support the E39 M5....I'm gonna try and find a good deal on it... :indiff:

All of this 'women shouldn't drive nice / sporty cars' is BS...I've seen more accidents with sports cars and the drivers are male between 17-25 than anything. I've a friend who is a two truck driver ( if you call him that though, he'll freak out...he is a 'auto recovery unit' ) anyway, he gets alot of business from young guys not engaging their e-brake enough and not leaving their cars in gear and rolleing somewhere they shouldn't ( ditches, guard rails, other cars ) But by the sounds of things, an its not that a women shouldn't have a nice sports car, but that an inexperienced driver shouldn't have a sports car..whether male or female.

What kind of trouble, if any, your average driver will find in a E36 M3 largely depends on how far they'll go with it.

A sensible person who is not inclined to drive anywhere near the limits of the car will probably find it's not much different from a 325, except the clutch is stiff, the ride is choppy and the seats are uncomfortable. But it's got "some pickup".

Your average hormone addled teenager with more ego than skill could very well find a lot of trouble. That's because the car is easy to drive fast and builds a lot of confidence. It covers mistakes without even letting you know you're making them. It flatters you and makes you think you're Nick Heidfeld or Jorg Muller. That is, until you think you can repeal the laws of physics. Then it will bite you.

A number of years ago, I read the 1995 M3 was one of the "most wrecked" cars in it's model intro year. There is a reason for that, me thinks.

As for lift throttle oversteer.. it can happen. Even with R-comps on the car. But you'd almost have to purposely invoke it. More likely the mistake will be terminal high-speed understeer.

McLaren F1GTR, if your sister wants an M3, I strongly suggest a coupe or sedan, but not the vert. They're decent cars, but with the weight penalty and body flex doesn't really live up to the M3 driving experience. Think of them as 332iCs.

Honestly, I think an E46 325CiC is her best bet. But I don't think an M3 is out of the question if she is willing to respect the car and understand it's limits.

As for a 3rd car, why not an early Boxster? (since she has her heart set on a vert of some kind)

Get her a audi model with quattro unless shes trying to commit suicide. Woman have lead foot and well e36 mr and rain on roads equaled a tottaled bimma. Plus E36 M3's arent even that spectacular I can just about tell them apart from sport e36's.

I drove an E36 M3 for 6 years in one of the rainiest climates in North America and never once did I have a problem with wet traction.

I don't know why some of you people seem to think M3s have a problem with rain. They are no more or less likely to be problematic in the wet as any other FR performance car.

Tire choice is the determining factor in wet performance. Early M3s used the Pilot MXX3 for an OE tire and it wasn't all that good in the wet. Later cars used the Pilot Sport, which had much better wet handling... even though it was an inferior tire in many other regards.

As for women drivers... well let's just say some of you guys need to come out of the dark ages.

What im saying is that for the average male they wont have any trouble at all but we are talking about a female here and they have lead for a right foot.

In my experience, both young men AND women have lead foots. The common theme is age, inexperience and a sense of immortality, not sex.

And my wife would smoke 95% of you boys in an M3

Why on earth do you recommend an Audi to EVERYONE? Stop it!

McLaren, I figure, if your sister can drive the M3, and she can drive a car like that, why worry about it? Granted, there's no sense in her buying it, but she's a woman, common sense usually doesn't figure into buying cars.

I suggest a jet fighter!

You can't slip on a wet road 30,000 feet above it.

Hiya! :D :O  Meow! (='.'=)

McLaren, I think I am going to have to give you a little warning about your sister! Based from myself and other girlfriends....girls have this tendency to keep their eyes and hearts on something they like until something better comes. :O

I have a feeling she is going to get that convertable since it gives out that "whoooo" feeling when you let the top off! If you don't want her to get that, you have to somehow get her to like the coupe or sedan. Your sister right now might thinking and dreaming about the convertable.

See..

prime example..

Girls like the road..

Then the cool new escalade going the other direction..

then the "hot pedestrian"
Followed by the new beauty shop opening up across the way.....then BAM

You forgot to look at that ugly traffic light..

Christ, people, everyone here (and on AutoWeek as well) always tells people "you can't handle a fancy car, you're only going to wreck it". I'm sure that of course all of you would be able to drive these cars perfectly capably, and if not, you certainly would decline one if one were offered to you.

(shakes head)
