Ok. I want to up the speed of my computer, without spending mega money. I've already overclocked my graphics card, and I got a score of 2961 when I ran 3DMark2001. I have a 32 meg Nvidia Gforce 2 Hercules 3D Prophet, 512 meg of ram, and a P3 1000. What can I do to increase speed without spending loads?

Thanks. :)

Well youve overclocked your graphics card, the only other thing I that you could do is your processor. So you need a bigger heatsink/fan combo.

BTW i recently got my paws on a P3 1ghz revision b chip, do you have the b version as well?

have good stuff for fans and stuff so that you dont blow your processor up (like me :D )

'Bout the best I think I'm gonna get.

Bah, Im not even going to see what my matrox G450 gets. Although my mate overclocked his G450.

I would do my processor but im not sure if my heatsink fan is beefy enough.

Im not really a PC gamer, so Im not bothered about my graphics card. Id rather have an extra few mhz on my cpu just to brag about it though :P

Get a new graphics card, that will increase the power of your PC more than any other part.

That's what I was thinking. I saw a Creative GeForce 4 MX420 at PCworld on special offer. Any good?

If you could get into it for under a $100 I would say it's good. It's going to be better than what you currently have. People are going to say to get this card or that, but realistically, take a look at the cards that are in your price range, compare the features, buy it, install it, use it, but never...never....never, ask people what they think about the card you 'just' bought. They will be sure to fame you for not droping $379.99 on the latest and greatest. :D

Happy hunting...

The GF4 MX has a serious flaw....No DX 8. so yes, it will give you much better performance, but if you want to play any games that take advantage (and in time require) Direct X 8, then you will either have to settle for crappier graphics, or not be able to play at all. So if you don't intend on buying a new card next year, i would stay away from the MX.

Here's some driver support info for the MX440

Driver Support:
- Microsoft Direct3D®, DirectDraw® ,DirectVideo® and ActiveX® for Window 95/98/ME®
- Complete Microsoft DirectX 8, DirectX 7, DirectX 6 and DirectX 5 support
- SGI OpenGL ICD for Window 95/98/ME®, WindowNT4® , Windows 2000® and Linux
- Window2000®, Window 95/98/ME®, WindowNT4®, Linux and OS/2

Where did you read that the MX440 didn't support DirectX 8?

Do not get the MX420! You can get a GeForce 3 for the same price and it will be faster. The GF3 supports DirectX 8 right out of the box. You could even get a GeForce 4 Ti4200 for a little bit more money.

The GF4 MX cards are actually not much more powerful than the GF2 line that they are replacing. Think of the GF4 MX as the card between the GF2 and GF3. Save your money for something like a GF3 or 4ti series (should go down as the new generations come out.), or a Radeon 7000-8500. Mghz won't really boost your 3dmark scores all that much btw, as almost all graphics are handled by the graphics card. It's like having 500 HP in a car, but lacking the gear ratio to get it going faster that 90.

the GF 2 you have has about 5.3 GB/second worth of memory bandwidth (which I think is a better way to judge power than polygon output.)
The GF4 MX440 (more powerful than the 420) only has 6.4 GB/second. Not much of an increase, and your shooting lower than that. Skip it and wait. Sorry for the double posting, I was still tryig to find that info when I last posted.

Speaking of Radeon 8500's, they are becoming quite cheap. You can most probably get a Radeon 8500 LE 128MB for under $100. Not bad at all, and the LE i bought overclocks very well (core goes over 300MHz and the mem tops out at 297MHz.)

Huh, interesting... What a POS the GF4/MX series must be for gamers... I've usally stuck with the old 3DFX stuff, then ATI....not much personal dealings with nVidia stuff..... So although the MX440 will support DX 8.0, the support only goes as far as letting the game boot, but lacking all the extra features that you would expect from DirectX 8.0+.

Thanks again for the insight. :D

Well, I like the look of the Geforce 4 TI4200, but I also like the look of the ATI Radeon 8500 LE.

I just don't know. :nervous:

either one is a good choice. the TI4200 should give u better performance. The ATI better image quality. So it's basically down to $$. do you want to save some $$ and get a nice card? Or spend a bit more, and get somthing a bit faster?

I have a Nvidia card right now, but I think you'll be happier with the ATI. It has an excellent image quality (One thing I never thought Nvidia had.)
My next card will probably be an ATI (the 9700 hopefully)
