I've been looking into buying a Capture Card to record some programs off the TV straight into the computer, but I have no clue as to what to get. Are there any cards out there that will let me record off say a VCR or a Sattelite receiver onto my PC and save them as a movie file???? And how good can the quality be??? Are there any cheap cards that have good quality or would I have to fork out some major cash for a good quality card??

Depends.. with a 1.2Ghz+ PC you can get SHVS+ quality saved in Mpeg2 format with a software based card like the Pinnaclesys PCTV Stereo. Cheap as dirt these days. With a 400Mhz+ PC, you can get SVHS+ quality saved in Mpeg2 format with a hardware based card like the Hauppauge WinTV PVR350..

Not so cheap, but the better solution IMHO since the hardware based cards takes all the compression off the CPU..

Note.. Hardware vs. software. Both cards are of course a hardware solution. When saying either HW or SW solution, one's referring to the Mpeg compression - either done by a chip on the card (Hardware) or by the CPU (software)...

Isn't it easier to use a DVD recorder (record stuff from tv) and then change the format (avi, etc....)??? I don't really know if it's mossible but I think it is.

i have this one:

the card itself is very good, but the drivers could be better.
I have used it to record replays from gt4 and last week i started to put all my old videotapes on DVD.
the quality is very good. Even if you watch it on the computer.

I would recommend an external card like this one. You can switch from 1 computer to another faster and as it is mentioned before, your cpu doesn't have to do much. You will still be able to use the pc while the card is recording.

How much did u pay for it?? and im going to use it for the same thing, putting all my old VHS F1 races on DVD, so far I got a DVD Recorder, but I really dont want to throw all my old VHS tapes away as some are in really good quality, anywho, so this one can connect to your PC and transfer the video over so that it can be stored on a PC?????
