Hey im 14 and got my first car(1995-1997 dodge avenger coupe with a manual 5 speed transmission)... the catch is it needs a new stock 2.0 liter straight four engine so im saving up to around 500 dollars to rebuild it (not my first rebuild... built a 427 corvette engine for my dads 1968 corvette), but seeing as i have an Asus transformer tablet i also want a keyboard dock which is around 110 plus shipping and will boost battery life to around 16 hours what do you guys think, i really want to rebuild the engine but its 500 DOLLARS!!

Ps: i already have 98 dollars cash, i know not that much but for not having a job at the moment thats quite a bit for me haha

You are 14 and own a car??

Are you allowed to drive it?
Apparently you don't have a job?
How will you pay for fuel, tyres, maintenance, insurance?

I would say they are slightly more important questions to answer before spending money you don't have on an engine rebuild of a car you might not be able to drive, let alone afford to keep running.

No i am not allowed to drive it, my dad had a car before he could drive it my mom did as well, at the moment i dont have the pink slip but its 100% paid off, as my mother drove it before the engine seized and needed fixed at the time she could not afford to fix it and has a new car, so all i have to do to get the pink slip is to prove that i will follow through with the rebuild, and i CANT get a job where i live there are no jobs hiring 14 year olds, currently im earning money via grade cards, been looking for a job for over a year, just no one hiring my parents agreed that if i keep my grades up when im 15.5-18 i may sign up with their insurance, and they will cover tires as well as emergency fixes to suspension, body, frame, ect.

Yea. I'd get some money from a job.

I gotta sweet deal in the local "prestige" garage. Sitting around all day looking at gtrs and ferraris, the important thing is to get a job you enjoy.

Anyway. There are better engines for this car. I gotta guy in rural England (I.e. most of it) who fitted a 1000bhp Hennessy tuned v8 from their Camaro into his fibreglass racer, when he was searching he found a 400bhp 3litre v6 Audi unit from the rs3 for £200. He also bought that and put it into his Mini. P.s he owns a scrapyard/bodyshop/tuning garage. That's where and why he gets this stuff.

For a first car im not looking for 1000 bhp, however i will end up putting a turbo in it as well as much better brakes (high performance brakes and disks like on my dads 2001 lincoln ls)

Yes. Look I'm not saying poooooooooweeeeeeeeer! I'm saying yo can get better for the same price.

True but remember put a new driver (even in 1 year and i will be a. Dumba** with power in the engine, i knowi will, no escaping it haha, better to keep stock 186 or so

And you're complaining now about needing 500 bucks for a new motor? Whaddya think the rest of that is gonna cost??!??!?

The Opinions/Current Events are not for such weighty decisions such as this thread topic...Moved to Cars in General.

Also, please do not use ambiguous thread titles. Almost every thread is pretty much a "question".

EVENTUALLY i will spend 700 dollars for a new set of preformance brakes and disks AND EVENTUALLY put in a 2000+ dollar turbocharger

Yes if i want to do that i will have to haha, probably will keep this car stock but im looking WAY into the future, by the time i get there i will probably have a new car, and a house, and a collage education

So, you are going to stick a bunch of photos together, and call it education?

Will that make enough money for all your plans?

:P

GRAMMAR NAZI!! Haha thanks for pointing that out, and... maybe it will haha

Although no company in America will hire you at your age, you should look really hard into doing little things in the neighborhood, ie. mow the lawn/landscaping for others or babysit, if you haven't already. Neither of those are glamorous or even steady jobs, but at least it's a little bit of money, and you'll get the satisfaction of having earned the money for your car.

As others have mentioned, cars are expensive to own and maintain. When you do start driving, be sure to have a rainy day fund for repairing the car well established before you even start thinking about mods. You'll have a lot better motoring experience that way.

I'm glad you got a mid-90s Dodge Avenger as a first car. Front wheel drive, slow, not too powerful and kind of rubbish. Perfect first car. 👍

I think you don't need the keyboard dock but you do need a new engine if you want the car to run. You'll get much more enjoyment and definitely more use from a car that runs and a tablet that works as opposed to a car that doesn't run and a tablet that works a bit better, unless the tablet is your only computer and you want to write essays on it or something maybe I suppose.

You're 14. Spend what little money you have on stuff that makes a difference now, not on a car that you can't legally drive for at least two years, and even then probably won't be running or insurable.

As others have said, do odd jobs around your neighbourhood. Get yourself known as trustworthy and reliable. This will help when you're looking for holiday/weekend jobs when you're 16 and you're expecting people to allow you to handle their money.

Dreams are good, but don't sacrifice the present for a promise of the future.

Precisely, now the trouble is my brother also wants the car and hes 16, no job, cant handle a wrench, nor can he save money, but i still have to try to get as much cash around as quickly as possible, if i want to get the car and not him

Although for a perfect car i would rather have my dads old 69 c10 pickup, yes its a little powerful, but it's built like a tank, if i got in an accident with that me and the truck could walk... or drive a way

Don't get the Keyboard Dock thing. I was 14 not too long ago, and I made some purchases that I wish I hadnt made. Eventually, that tablet will get old, and that $110 won't have been well spent.

Also, rather than dropping $500 on the car which is most easily available, try getting a job and then looking for a proper car that you actually want.

See, just because something's built like a tank doesn't mean it's incredibly safe. If you got into an accident with that you're probably (don't know about the safety of this particular car) less likely to walk away than in the Dodge Avenger. It's mid-90s safety technology vs late 60s. Guess which is better.

Depends entirely on what you hit and how you hit it.

C10 vs tree will be a worse result than Avenger vs tree. Avenger vs other car will be a worse result than C10 vs other car right up to the point at which the truck's steering column spears you.

Yeah that's really the only part of it i DON'T like that and the fact it doesnt have safety glass, just sheet glass I believe, also the truck has HORRIBLE gas mileage, 14mpg street and 25mpg on the highway

25 miles per gallon in a 1960s Chevy Truck? Sorcery. :sly:
Our Mini barely gets 30 mpg, and that's a lightweight 4-cylinder car.
The Lexus gets just under 20 with city driving.
But seriously, that's probably a bit optimistic.

I know it it sounds crazy, my dad had to drive it about 30 miles to fort wayne for 3 to 4 weeks(where he works) when we had his 2001 lincoln ls on jacks because his left rear brake locked up, but going 60 in top gear(4th) is just above idle in the truck haha we were going around town foot off the gas in 4th gear going a steady 40 lol no gas at all pure idle.

Our 68 corvette, gets about 20-25 mpg on the high way but just like the truck my dad has the transmission tuned for max speed at minimum rpm as in at idle what is its top speed? Say 37 in 5th gear on out vette, so his goal is to get it to 47 (or so) so you keep the rpm as low as possible going 65(thats the speed of the highway)
