After a few days of working out what fits best, here's a set of guidelines for titling your thread properly:

Road Cars
Single generation with no major changes and no differences in specification: [Make] [Model] [Year]
Example: [Koenigsegg] [ONE:1] [2014] = Koenigsegg ONE:1 2014

Single generation with no major changes but different specifications: [Make] [Model] [Specific Trim] [Specific Engine, if applicable] [Year]
Example: [Bugatti] [Veyron] [Bleu Centenaire] [2009] = Bugatti Veyron Bleu Centenaire 2009

Multiple generations of single specification cars: [Make] [Model] [[Generation] or [(Generation)] [Year]
Example: [Volkswagen] [Golf] [(Mk2)] [GTi 16v] [1986] = Volkswagen Golf (Mk2) GTI 16V 1986
Example: [Vauxhall] [Corsa] [D] [VXR] [2007] = Vauxhall Corsa D VXR 2007

Multiple generations with different specifications: [Make] [Model] [Generation] [Specific Trim/Specific Engine] [Year]

In all cases [Year] must be a four digit year and the first year of production or competition unless a specific year of production or competition is required.

If the car is already in the Gran Turismo series and your suggestion is to enhance it to Premium standard, please put "[Premium]" prior to the model year.

There may be exceptions and things I haven't thought of yet. Please feel free to PM me if you need advising on appropriate titling.

Special note regarding Mercedes and BMW...

Mercedes is a little awkward, both on branding and model names, while BMW joins it on the naughty step for model names. In order to get the threads indexed in a more reasonable fashion, please be aware of the following:

Mercedes cars pre-1926 should have the manufacturer name "Mercedes".
Mercedes cars from 1926-2014 should have the manufacturer name "Mercedes-Benz"
Mercedes cars post-2014 should have the manufacturer name "Mercedes-Benz", "Mercedes-AMG" or "Mercedes-Maybach", depending on the product. Take particular care with model lines in the Mercedes-Benz range that have an AMG variant, as these are branded as Mercedes-AMG from 2015 and on.

Both Mercedes and BMW refer to their model lines separately from the individual specifications. The Mercedes-Benz A250 is, for instance, an A-Class, while the BMW 330d is a 3-Series. Please also be aware of this when giving your Suggestion thread a title:

Mercedes-Benz A250 --> Mercedes-Benz A-Class A250
BMW 330d --> BMW 3-Series 330d

This will not be required for BMW's halo M models and the newest Mercedes-AMG cars.

You should also include the generation after the model name but before the specification:

Mercedes-Benz A-Class (W168) A180 1998
Mercedes-Benz A-Class (W169) A200 2005
Mercedes-Benz A-Class (W176) A250 2015
BMW 3-Series (E21) 320 1976
BMW 3-Series (E30) 320i 1986

Again, this is not applicable to BMW's halo M models or the newest Mercedes-AMG cars.

While there may be temptation to amend the generation identifier for specific body types (E90, E91, E92, E93) where applicable, please leave it at its most basic and refer to the body type after the specification:

BMW 3-Series (F30) 320i Saloon 2013
BMW 3-Series (F30) 320i Estate 2013

If you have already made a Mercedes or BMW thread, please check to make sure that it is appropriate to this new format, but don't panic about it as I'll be heading in to change them anyway. Please be mindful of the new format when creating new threads though, as it will help with the indexing of thread titles - grouping cars of the same generation together, rather than cars with the same designation but separated by 40 years...

Of course I've no idea what I'm going to do with Porsche and its decision to start counting backwards all of a sudden...

So - taking suggestions on how to deal with the following:

Porsche:
The 911 generations are 911, 964, 993, 996, 997 and 991. Worse, the 911 Turbo was called 930, right in the middle of the rest of the 911 range. This means that the cars would be indexed out of date order:

Porsche 911 (911) 1963
Porsche 911 (911) 1988
Porsche 911 (930) 1975
Porsche 911 (964) 1989
Porsche 911 (991) 2012
Porsche 911 (993) 1994
Porsche 911 (996) 1999
Porsche 911 (997) 2005

I'd probably fix the regular generation numbers by preceding them with the Mk number. So (Mk1, 911), (Mk2, 964), (Mk3, 993) and so on. Fixing the 930 Turbo... No idea. Maybe "Porsche 911 (911) 930 Turbo"? Or, since the car wasn't actually sold with the 930 designation in the model name (911 Turbo in the UK, 911 Turbo Carrera in the USA), drop the "930" altogether?


Cars with the same name but different cars sold in different territories:
There's an annoying fleet of these. The Ford Escort was sold in the USA as a completely different car than the European Ford Escort and had its own generational designations. This would lead to very wonky indexing:

(the 2014 one is the new Chinese rebrand of the Ford Focus. No, really)

Simply putting a territory after the Mk number won't fix anything. Putting it before it would group the models together better but it doesn't seem entirely satisfactory...

Yeah it's helpful, but I think it's going to be more difficult to suggest cars if we don't can find the generation the right generation code. If the "MK" is enough it's OK but sometime it's hard enough to know which generation the car is from.

But how in earth do I find the class or series/level for a racing car if it doesn't are in the information of the car? I have a race car that I would like to suggest but can't find either series/level or class when searching information about it, so i don't dare to suggest it

This isn't the place to discuss this and indeed all of the posts bar the guidelines posts #1 and #2 will be deleted and the thread locked again once a satisfactory system is in place.

However, it's easy to find the generation of any car model. Wikipedia.

Ford Escort in the USA never went by a Mk1, Mk2, Mk3 generational designation. First generation is on the CE14 platform, second and third generation is CT120. That probably doesn't help fix any sorting issues though.

It didn't have any official Mk designations anywhere - and if you look at the Ford Fiesta's Wikipedia page you can see just how confusing that is when the "Mk5" could mean the Mk4 facelift (itself only a Mk3 facelift) or the Mk6, depending on who you ask.

I'm looking to avoid platform names in general. Sometimes it's useful as it's in very commonplace use, but most of the time it isn't - and then sometimes you get platform codes that are wildly out of order for no good reason. Of course this doesn't get remedied when you use Mk numbers and there's 10 different generations...


In other news, I'm bored of losing perfectly good suggestions through some members' reticence to do any research or get their thread titles sorted no sooner than the third time of asking.

The simplest solution is to reassign their threads to someone else and the simplest solution to that is to assign it to a member of staff. Except we'll be accused of fishing for likes.

So in future, any threads which would merit locking or deletion for reasons other than duplication or multiplicity will be reassigned to @Suggestinator

I think this isn't the place to post this but whatever. Can we have some guidelines on pictures? I'm tired of people posting base models with sport editions of cars. It's also annoying when someone posts photos of a two door version of a car with 4 door versions in the same post. Make up your mind.
