GTPlanet, as you may know, we may have what we call the "me too" cars. This is where one company makes something to contend with a better company and sometimes can fall short. So you see, let's take a look at a few. Some say the latest Mercury Maurader (correct spelling?) is nothing more than a hyped-up Crown Victoria. Some may think the Lincoln Blackwood pickup is nothing more but an F-150. And as my parents seen this past weekend, the Lincoln Aviator seems more like an Explorer or Expedition. I didn't want to tick off fans of Ford, but from my past three examples, the rip-offs mentioned are from the Ford Motor Company.

If you think there are cars out there that are rip-offs in one way or another, discuss them here. And here is a hint if you want to continue the conversation... do you think the Pontiac GTO is a rip-off of the Holden Monaro?

Is that anything to do with the fact that they are the same car?

Aren't Ford/Lincoln/Mercury the same damn company? Doesn't Ford own the others?

I can't think of any cars that are ripoff's at the moment, but I can say Mercury Maurader's are effing awesome. I've seen some blown Mercury Maurader's that are crazy. I would love to have one as a daily driver.

I reckon Hyundai's(sp?) are rip-offs, most of the ones I see are just lok-a-likes of other cars. They even have mixtures between cars, there is one that looks like a Jag at the back and a Mercadies at the front. ANyways, I hate them.

WTF? You think Lincoln is ripping off their owners? And you didn't know the Monaro is a GTO? What cave have you been hiding in?

You do not know how much i agree with you, i dislike most Hyundais, they are massive copy-cats(Kia falls into that category too), if i see one more sonata....

Well, at least they're decent cars.

I don't mind the styling to be copied from other cars because it happens a lot nowadays.

Cars like renault, citroen, fiat really do have sometimes radical styling.

Geely Merrie 300.

No, It's a Chinese car. The rest of the body is not all that mercish but the front ... How dare they?

Here's an older one. Still c-class front..

I like the Hyundai Coupe, thats alright.

i actually mind the styling being copied, i wouldnt like to see a merc from a distance, then when it comes up close its a geely merrie. Each manufacture should have its own unique design. i would prefer it if cars had radical styling which was unique, rather than manufacturers copying one another.

Yes, how dare they. The back of the car with the Cclass front looks photochopped, but if this car is real i wouldnt be all that amused.

Looks like someone's riced out Sentra(the older ones, like a '96) that bought a C-class front clip and thought it would be awsome to connect em up.

Ohh yea, the Geely company needs to hire new photo people. The shadow shows the light coming from the back yet there's a sun glare off of the headlight and the tires don't look like they're holding the wieght of the car...

Yes your right GTJugend, damn this site should be banned look at what i found at the bottom, as you said the beauty leopard is here. Beauty is the last word i would use to describe this, were they trying to copy the toyota Paseo.

Still to this day I think the New Accords back end looks like a Benz.

Also there is no way Lincoln rips off Ford, because Lincoln is the luxury divison of Ford. Just like would you say that a Acura NSX ripped off the Honda NSX? No same car, different badges, profits all go to the same place.

Is it just me or do the rear lights look remarkably like a MKIV Supra?

I reckon side windows, rear bumper and scallop in side are supraish as well. It's like the Toyota had a toytown makeover, lol.

 Yeah i agree with you i will have to think about some other cars too.

just for some of the British members, but I have heard that apparently MG/Rover's new small car, the 'CityRover', is just a rip-off of a very popular Indian super mini, the Tata Indica.

Yeah - a 2-wheel drive F150. What a bad idea that was.

And as my parents seen this past weekend, the Lincoln Aviator seems more like an Explorer or Expedition.

It's an Explorer - even though it gets 63 more horsepower from the same engine. (Though it accelerates exactly the same)

You have no idea how sick I am of hearing this. I love the Honda Accord, but let's be truthful here. The back end of my car is styled so much better (and classier) than the Accord's back end that it would send the Accord running for cover. And if people still get them confused, I'll race any Accord with any modifications at any time and still beat it. :)

That's not such a good example - the Honda NSX and Acura NSX literally are the exact same car but with different badges for different markets. A better analogy between, say, the Lincoln Aviator and the Ford Explorer would be the Lexus RX330 and Toyota Highlander - just premium versions of mainstream models.

It is - and as such is the worst car ever made. It's a third-rate Indian car pretending to be an exciting new Rover. The very definition of rip-off.

Still, it's revenge for the Hindustan Ambassador, I guess.

How about the VW Audi Seat Ibiza Beetle TT A3 S3 Leon Golf Polo Fabia for a rip-off? Okay, so they're all the same basic platform and all owned by the same people, but a fancy DSG gearbox doesn't make the difference in price between the identical-but-for-the-body Audi TT V6 (£29k, 3.2V6, 4WD, 247hp, 0-60mph in 6.4) and Golf R32 (£22k, 3.2V6, 4WD, 240hp, 0-60mph in 6.6) - and the Golf will seat four.

I've seen these things in the sheet, they're horendous. It screams targeted buyer is "old couple trying to get notcied by the upper end retirement home".

It's a point I've heard many times, but I don't buy it - the Diamante debuted only fifteen months after the 5-series and was released into a segment that, at the time, had intense competition with other wannabe luxury sedans (Nissan Maxima, Mazda 929). A case could be made to me that Mitsubishi was trying to sort of rip off BMW's front end styling, but not the 5-series in particular.
