Jul.1 (GMM) The strong rumour in the days before the British grand prix is that David Coulthard will announce his retirement from formula one this weekend at Silverstone.

The veteran of approaching 250 grands prix, 15 consecutive seasons and 13 wins - and at 37 the oldest active race driver - is out of contract at Red Bull at the end of 2008.

With German youngster Sebastian Vettel expected to claim his seat for next year, it is now strongly speculated that Coulthard, a Scot, will take the opportunity of perhaps his last home race to signal the impending end of his F1 career.

He said recently about the prospect of retirement as a race driver: "When that moment comes, there you go. That's the journey of life. You move on to the next thing.

"There are a lot worse things that can happen to you and you move on to the next challenge," Coulthard added.

It's been fun, crazy Dave!

If I tap my heels three times and repeat "James Allen"...?

:D

Never really been a fan of him in fairness, great to see Vettel in the RBR next year though :D

The rumor is that DC will do F1 coverage for BBC next year.

I must say his review of the monoco gp was rather good.

Crazy Dave comin’ on strong wit’ tha fierce flava o’ Red Bull. Smell like tha reception area at a horse insemination centre. Yea. So we sly on over Monte C side and man, it be wet like da ladeez when Crazy D in da house. Know wha’a mean? Some of dem bloods, they be sayin’ that all Crazy D doin’ in ’08 is gettin’ into a smackdown wit’ some other cats on da track. Yea, well tha D Man he be provin’ them wrong. Cuz this time he don’t get no contact wit’ any other car. No, he hit tha barrier. That show them haters they don’ know shee-it. And if anyone says that I’m clearly going to be sacked by the team at the end of the season I shall kick three colours of **** out of them.

After one of the GPs (Montreal?), his thoughts were quite obvious that he wanted to retire. He has had a fantastic career, one of the few drivers to speak his mind, too.

Slightly similar to Massa and Barrichello, except Rubens is still with us.

Surely Webber's time is nearly up soon too...

I shouldn't think so. He's only 31, and has only finished outside the points twice this season; he's got experience whilst still being - in F1 terms - barely middle-aged.

But surely if I suggest it enough, it will become true!

I think he's a too proud man to say, 'they dont want me, they want a younger driver'. I might be wrong but it seems they want to push Vettel forward before he's taken off them, DC's the bloke to go. Maybe this and his age help the decision for him to retire... if he does.

Happy retirement David Coulthard. ;)
But to be honest, he could at least stay until the end of the season to have the title "second most GP start in career" after Barrichello..... I think he still have it in him to race a little more, maybe even venture into other motorsports. But yeah, if he totally quits racing than its sad to see I guess......

@ Holdenhsvgtsr:

One thing's fo' sho'. RBR will have a good driver lineup next season, Liuzzi to STR Danny? :D

Pleeeeeeeeease STR! I'll be your friend again!
I may even forgive you for Bourdais!

I think that this year is the right one for DC to call it a day. He's been outclassed by Webber this year, and Webber doesn't even seem to be up to his usual mental antics. Just getting on with his job for once.

It's just been confirmed that David Coulthard IS retiring at the end of the season. But he's staying on as a consultant to Red Bull Racing so hopefully we'll see more of him.:) So long Dave, it's been fun!

David Coulthard will bring his 14-year Formula One driving career to a close at the end of the season.

The 37-year-old Scot, who won 13 races, made his announcement on the eve of Sunday's British Grand at Silverstone, which will be his 237th Grand Prix.

Coulthard drove for Williams and McLaren and is now at Red Bull Racing.

"I will remain actively involved in the sport as a consultant to Red Bull Racing focusing on testing and development of the cars," he said.

"I have an open mind if I will compete again in the future, in some other form of motorsport, so I am definitely not hanging up my helmet."

I wanted to wait until someone brought up the possibility of DC racing elsewhere so I didn't look like a :dunce:...he made a visit to Michigan (I think) a few weeks ago for the NASCAR race and he enjoyed it. I wonder if perhaps Red Bull might boot AJ Allmendinger in favor of DC, though that particular situation might be a bit hasty.

Past tense, 2 days from now.

Is DC caught in some kind of time vortex?

Or can the BBC now travel into the future for its reports?????
