Drivetrain Question

As some of you might know from reading my previous threads I've been successfully formulating a "sport package" that I can put on all street cars to make them a bit more exciting without going overboard and crossing over to the racing side of things such as a putting a racing exhaust or stage 1, 2, and 3 weight reduction on a street car whose aim is not at racing. Although everything has been going smoothly with creating the package, I've run into a bump in the road with the drivetrain upgrades. There are a few different upgrades that I am considering but I want to make sure that they're not on the racing side of things and that they are somewhat commonly done to street cars such as a sport exhaust. These upgrades include the sport or semi-racing flywheel and the single plate or double plate clutch, which ones if any should I include in the "sport package"?

Sport Flywheel and Single-Plate Clutch (I think the twin-plate is a semi-racing modification?). Both components play a role in transmission performance so improving the flywheel will improve vehicle momentum while the clutch can speed up engages and disengages from the engine to the transmission.

That's what I was thinking about doing, do you know if these upgrades are somewhat common?

I would say don't install any drivetrain upgrades. Aside from the LSD and the other thing for AWD cars, drivetrain upgrades make the car shift faster. The cars in GT5 already shift too fast in my opinion.

You're right about that, as like I explained on my first post. Many cars in the game already shift quickly enough, but they are some that suffer from slow shift response (can't point out which one).

I have tuned a few cars in real life and done a lot of meet and race, drags and cruises.
in real life in the UK the majority of people that I met had the following upgrades in order of popularity. This list may help with the tuning packages for the european cars.

Common
Sports exhaust. (normally just the backbox so almost useless)
Lowered suspension (fixed)
Engine remap. (or chip on older cars)
Bigger brakes. (not possible on GT5 and completely inconsequential in game anyway)
Grippy tyres (comfort soft or in extreme cases sports hards)
De catted exhaust (you could put the sports cat on for this)
Sports air filter.
Cosmetic crap like bodykits and wings that you could put as some aero front and back.

Rare
High lift cams (stage 1 engine upgrade)
After market inlet manifolds.
Larger turbos and intercoolers on smaller cc cars.

Quite rare
After market exhaust manifolds
Engine balancing, porting, displacement increase etc. (Stage 2 and 3).
Supercharger.

I thought this might help you with your quest and to answer your original question, I never knew anyone that used a lightened flywheel and very few that put a stronger clutch in unless they were either very rich or very serious about track days.

Wow, thanks for the detailed information man.

It seems like a supercharger isn't that rare but I could be wrong... :odd:

No problem, remember this is only based on my experience of UK tuners. Superchargers are much more likely in countries that prefer larger cc engines.

Superchargers aren't really rare, many newer makes have the option from the factory, or aftermarket they can be purchased off the web for a lot of vehicles. But the downside is, most of the supercharger kits cost about $3,000US, and that's not installed. So most people choose instead to spend that money on wheels & tires, CPU chip, exhaust, intake, injectors/carburetors, suspension mods, or a nitrous system.

As for the rest of Berty's comment, I agree

A lot of people are wary of changing to a lighter flywheel because it can have negative effects on driveability a daily driven car. For realism I wouldn't include them.

I must say berty1979 is spot on. The problem in the UK is that there are many 'boy racers' who think putting a K&N air filter or a loud backbox on the exhaust makes their car go 200mph, and that putting 17 inch rims on a corsa makes it handle better......alot of it isn't done properly.
Saying that, I know a guy who spent ALOT of money on a 1996 Nissan Micra and had it do the 400m drag in 14 seconds....

And if I remember right, in smaller cars with less power, putting a lighter flywheel on actually kills it going up hills and in between shifts when it loses momentum....If somebody could confirm that it would be wonderful.

EDIT: Beaten to it by Peter
