Driving with a controller sucks!

Says the person who goes around blaming a Stratos for it's twitchy handling character :D but yea, it does take some time to adapt to a controller. I've been using one since GT5 came out, and I can just about match a poor-average wheel user. How does driving with a wheel feel like? Like driving a real car?

Well ive now tamed the mighty stratos and i found out its great :)

I have a few buddies that use controllers and kick butt......but for me it's all about the experience and using a wheel makes the game that much better.

As for me using a controller, I do it, but only when in the menus, that is where the controller shines:lol:

I've been driving with a wheel since day one. When I bought my PS3 back in 2008, I ordered a G25 at the same time. I'm now using a G27 and I'm just waiting for for an official release date from Thrustmaster for the H-pattern shifter and I'll be ordering a T500RS.

I don't just play GT5. I play other PS3 based racing games and I also play PC based racing sims. I'm looking for the most realistic experience possible. And to me, using a wheel is an essential part in that experience. The few times I tried driving with the DS3, I was completely hopeless. I could barely control the car, let alone set any competitive times. But that said, I don't really play any other games outside of racing sims so I have almost no experience with the DS3. For me it's basically a device to turn on or shut off the PS3 and navigate the XMB. It's a foreign object that still doesn't feel quite natural in my hands.

Owning a wheel, especially a mid or upper range wheel is not cheap. And for many people on this site, who are still students, or struggling in a bad economy or for whatever reason, don't have the financial means to buy one, I understand and sympathize. I was there once too. But I can't quite understand why people wouldn't WANT to use a wheel with a driving game, if they could. In my opinion, it's the single most important step in bringing a game like GT5 away from gaming and that much closer to a sim racing experience.

Real cars have real steering wheels. (Not DS3s) :)

Driving with a wheel is essential for me too. But to be honest, i've realised now that the only game which actually responds correctly to my steering inputs is F1 2010. I don't get why no other racing game on the PS3 seems to correctly simulate this. Case in point; doing a licence test in GT5 yesterday I had to take the Schumacher S in an M5. Applying the normal amount of steering and it just understeered wide, so I lifted but then I simply couldn't beat the golden lap time, till I realised that if I just cranked a lot more steering lock I oculd muscle the car through the chicane flat. Why does say, a 45% steering input with my G25 result in maybe only a 30% steering input in the game? Surely in this day and age this should not be a problem. SCC and F1:CE were the same to varying degrees - F1 2010 on the other hand does what you command it to with the wheel, probably why i'm relatively fast at it compared with GT5 and SCC which I was always very average at.

Part of the reason I wouldn't get one even if I had the money.

i don´t have the wheel because too things :

1st space

2st wife :-)

it´s a question of time , i always play on a ds3 and i think is fine .

Pfft, personal preference. My laptimes with a wheel Vs a controller are only tenths, if not hundredths, of a second apart. A friend and I spent a long time on GT4 trading laps alternately using a controller and a wheel. Net result, very little to no difference in our times.

Currently I'm relying on a pair of manky SixAxis controllers, but they need replacing. Any small steering correction I make to the left causes the mushroom to stick. Makes life tedious. I'll replace both of them with DS3 type controllers, but maybe I'll get myself a wheel in the near future. We're moving house soon and the Wife and I are keen to have a room to accommodate our gaming habits...
