The BBC and Sky Sports will broadcast Formula 1 in the UK between 2012 and 2018 under a new rights deal.

The BBC has been the exclusive broadcaster of F1 in the UK since 2009 but its contract with Formula One Management was due to expire after the 2013 season.

Sky Sports will show every race, qualifying session and practice live.
BBC Sport will broadcast half the races live, as well as the qualifying and practice sessions from those races. Both companies will broadcast in High Definition.

The BBC will have highlights on TV and mobile for any race it it is not showing live, and all races will be broadcast on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Barbara Slater, director of BBC Sport, said: "We are absolutely delighted that F1 will remain on the BBC.

"The sport has never been more popular with TV audiences at a 10-year high and the BBC has always stated its commitment to the big national sporting moments.

"With this new deal not only have we delivered significant savings but we have also ensured that through our live and extended highlights coverage all the action continues to be available to licence fee payers."

Races shown live on BBC TV will include the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Monaco GP and the concluding race of the season.

Barney Francis, Managing Director of Sky Sports, said: "This is fantastic news for F1 fans and Sky Sports will be the only place to follow every race live and in HD.

"We will give F1 the full Sky Sports treatment with a commitment to each race never seen before on UK television."

Curious to see what people across the pond think, but I think the general reaction will be pretty negative. Seems quite unfortunate.

What does this mean for my TSN broadcast which uses the BBC feed? Go back to Speed/Fox?

[Darth Vader]

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

So what does this mean for races shown in Australia? Do we only get BBC commentating half the races? Because I don't think I could live with the ONE team commentating for anything more than half an hour.

Hopefully it's not like Spain, where it showed the speed coverage for the first half, which was aweful, commercials every 5 minutes.:yuck: This is bad news indeed.

My reaction to Speed's coverage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEk_ZNmH-6E

As awful as Speed is (I'll be the first to admit that), at least now Speed has 75% of the races live (maybe more, I hear they want to re-negotiate with FOX). That will be more than the BBC! :sly:

I remember that now... Why did that happen again? I also seem to remember one of the speed commentators referring to Renault in the most annoying way possible... Rey-Know.

Linked. It pretty much sums up how I feel right now.

That was my reaction when I saw the thread title. I can just see it now in the One HD programming room:

(Top 3 fighting for lead)
Programmer 1: So who's doing the broadcast?
Programmer 2: I don't know it keeps changing.
Programmer 1: We haven't had an ad break for the whole race.
Programmer 2: What do you want me to do?
Programmer 1: Stick an ad break now.
Programmer 2: What with this great battle on.
Programmer 1: Do you want the advertisers to get angry and do you want to get paid?
Programmer 2: Yes (Sticks an ad break)
(3 minuets later)
Programmer 2: Oh no! (discovers that all of the 3 battlers have crashed and now a guy in a middle pack team is leading)

P.S. Why have I never watched The Office?

I imagine TSN must be pretty pissed now as well. Will either have to hire a commentary team of their own or broadcast the Speed coverage, which people can just get by going to Speed TV anyway. Unless they black it out. Which would be a nightmare for me with the Euro rounds as I would have no 🤬 clue which channel to record, or who is gonna black out who. I would have to be up at 4AM for those races in that case.

Bernie you numpty. Quoted as saying F1 will not be on Sky...

🤬...

This is terrible news.

Agreed :(

The only hope we have is that the pay per view service will mean no adverts, it's that way with football and with Sky movies (Both ad-free, at least during action anyway), so let's hope they don't cut the race in bits.

The main problem is that unless the current team works with both the BBC and Sky, we'll get god-awful commentary and analysis for the Sky part of the races. I bet Jonathan Legard is sending his CV in to sky now...

I don't know what people are expecting. The BBC obviously feel that sustaining the full broadcast is unsustainable, and Sky are the people who feel they can make it work. Or do you expect the Beeb to keep wasting money on something they believe is bad for them?

There's no word on how it will be divvied up, but I imagine the broadcast on Sky and the BBC will be identical. I'm guessing Sky are the ones who have purchased the rights, with the BBC fronting up some of the cost in order to be able to keep broadcasting, effectively making them a syndicated station, which would be cheaper. I very much doubt the split broadcast will affect the Australian coverage.

When the coverage is this good and audiences higher than ever, I don't want to see their side of the argument.

The thing with TV licenses is, their ratings could be zero and they would still get the same amount of money, it makes them not care about the viewer...

It's backwards, Bernie should be paying the TV station to give F1 the exposure it needs.

So the BBC should keep sinking money into a black hole simply because the sport is getting record viewing figures? Sorry, but you need to compare the figures for Formula 1 to the figures for other sports.

I already have Sky Sports, mostly for the football season and I know they don't interupt the matches. Same for the darts & rugby.

I'm more concerned/annoyed about the presentation package, BBC's package right now, is the best it's been since the early days of the ITV coverage. Sky Sports have a lot of little nuances that they have to great right - such as Fleetwood Mac as title track, Brundle's grid-walks, restrained clutter on screen for the race, etc...

I don't get how this sharing will work, either. apparently they'll split coverage when it's duel broadcast but when it's Sky Sports exclusive, BBC will only get highlights. Who & When decide which GP will be exclusive to SS? Will the prestige races be equally split, will there be a block of SS exclusives or alternate coverage?

This also potentially sounds disasterous for SS - The 'Super Sunday' football/soccer matches are usually touted as 'must see' and often feature top 6 or derby matches and are given top priority; if the two companies agree that Sky would show the Brazillian GP, this would directly collide with the 'feature' football match of the weekend.

Sky Sports also show Saturday Midday matches - usually played earlier than the normal 15:00 start for all traditional matches throughout the association as due to broadcasting or police reasons. GP Qualifying will again be bumped off to Sky Sports 2.

Here's another bad omen for Sky Sports aswell, there last opportunity within the Motorsports coverage was with the fated A1GP...

Sky Sports haven't said they're going to change a thing about the broadcast. However, if there are less grid-walks in future, it will be because Brundle has already said that he will be doing less of them.

That will likely be agreed-upon in advance.

A1GP didn't fail because Sky was the broadcaster. A1GP failed because it was compeltely mismanaged.

I imagine most won't willingly pay, what £600? a year for something they get free this year. I sense a decrease in viewers and increase in illegal streaming, at least in the UK. Whether it will be minimal or substantial remains to be seen if these people carry out their current anger or change their minds next year and dump the money anyway.

Curious to see what FOTA say about this, maybe today. Remember Mr. Whitmarsh?

Martin Whitmarsh
It’s crucial to the commercial model of Formula 1 that TV coverage should remain free-to-air, and therefore universally accessible, and therefore widely consumed and enjoyed by large numbers of viewers – and the BBC delivers that in the UK.

Our current contracts require that F1 remain on free-to-air and the teams, through FOTA, are clearly going to safeguard their business interests and the interests of the fans in this regard.

Yup, my interest in F1 was only hanging in barely by a thread anyway, given that by the time next season starts I'm going to have cancelled my full-on Sky subscription, I can't see me making the effort with F1 at all in 2012.

I think the BBC were doing a pretty good job with F1 coverage, far better then ITV we...

<AD BREAK>

..re, but I guess it's difficult for the BBC to compete with SKY's £$£$£$£$

A comment on the Guardian's news story hit the nail on the head;

If I can't watch F1 than I want a discount on my TV licence !!!

There is no way i'm paying a full TV license to see half the races a year when it's the only thing I watch on TV (Being a student, I don't have a TV, I watch online - it's still required though).

With loopholes in the iPlayer terms and conditions, I can still watch the BBC races, just not live, BBC has just lost my license fee for 2012 and 2013.

It won't be the same guys on Sky that will be commentating because BBC will be broadcasting extended highlights so I would imagine that the current commentators will stay with BBC.

Simple solution: Don't watch F1 on Sky. Ratings will suffer and they will have to drop it. Who's with me?!

Apparently Sky have double the ad time that ITV did as well - 15 minutes per hour rather than 7.5 minutes per hour.

Would have preferred BBC to save money by dropping Eddie Jordan than by dropping half the races...

And yes, I could probably watch all the races using the online BBC feed, but this is F1, not porn. I prefer watching F1 on my HD TV rather than a 10.1 inch netbook screen.

I'm hoping that sky will do some special F1 only deal. Dunno if I can afford *the works*.

As it happens, a few sky sports channels can be accessed via subscription on a freeview box. Providing F1 is available on these channels, it may be the best (cheapest) option for those in the uk who want to watch it legally.
