Gold in automatic transmisison ?

I drive using auto transmission and the best I can achieve in the license tests is silver. I switched to manual gears and within moments I hit gold. So it got me thinking, is it possible to achieve gold in all the licenses using automatic transmission ? Or do I need to improve my driving skills ? :)

Interesting question, I cannot see it being that big of a factor. In most cases the auto up-shifts at roughly the right range. Most troubles occur with the autos when it either kicks down a gear to early, or not early enough. You can hold the auto in gear by holding the "Up-Shift" button. This allows you to have more freedom over which gear you tackle certain areas with.

Personally, I would try and learn how to use a manual full time as this has benefits including;

More realistic feel to the game
More enjoyable (oddly enough)
More freedom in gear selection to prevent wheelspin, for instance, short shifting (changing up early) to improve traction out of a tight corner can save valuable tenth's of a second (important if you want all gold licence's and also for getting the best out of your time's).

Short shifting can also be used to provide more stability in long corners, as this allows you to carry the same speed through the corner but at a lower rev range, which means less torque tearing at your car.

Hope this helps. :)

I use auto most of the time. Too lazy to use manual, not because I don't know how... (Got a 100% game in GT3 with manual once). But I found the very first licence B1 is almost impossible for me to gold in auto, but I can gold every time in manual. So to answer the question... it depends. :) Some are easy in auto, some are not, but I think it would be more difficult to do all golds in auto.

manual also gives you the ability to go a little into the red range depending on the car. so the short gap in acceleration comes later which sometimes can give you the 0.100 of a second thats just left for gold.

I try all the tests in Automatic first...if I can't get Gold on first 5 tries I switch to manual and get Gold... But most of the time I've gotten Gold on about 3rd try with automatic.

I'm golding all the licenses before I proceed with a single race, just because I want to punish myself, and they won't let me have whips any more. :dopey:

UPDATE: All Gold!!!!!! 4-26

I use the DS2 controller and automatic, but with judicious use of the R1 button when needed.

I have a 100% all-gold GT3 game, same thing: DS2 and auto.

It can be done, but you really have to want to. :banghead:

I buy only stick shift cars in real life, but since 2,3 years ago, I've using AT cars in Gran Turismo games.

I use the DS2 controller, and find it really hard to use the manual. While my younger brother, who uses the GT3 steering wheel says it's so much easier with manual(paddle shift). It's probably different for everybody, but I can see myself with an manual trans, if I had DFP. It's easier to learn/use manual if you have an DFP type wheels IMO.

Chamonix - Peugeot 205 Turbo in the Special Licence was remarkably difficult in auto. After switching to manual, I cut something like 8 seconds off my time.
I would say that you pretty much need to be in manual to get the golds.

All 80 golds with manual and DS2 :) . Always used manual always will, find it gives you far more control than auto, especially during the lap tests as auto can sometimes shift down in the middle of a corner, which can unsettle cars somtimes.

The chamonix and ice ring tests come to mind where using auto could be a disadvantage 'cos you can't shortshift to minimize wheelspin.

I use DFP with paddle-shift for most of Gold, but I find it hard to get Gold by stick-shift. Back to GT3, I AUTO+DS2 for Gold...now, I never AUTO anymore, it's quite BORING....Shifting is big part of enjoyment of driving, especially while overtaking AI car with better exit-cornor speed by keep rev high enough...I don't like Late-Brake + cut-in-line combo overtake. Back to the topic, anyone get ALL GOLD with DFP + Stick shift ???

I got 80 golds and completed all the driving missions using auto and DS2. Never used the Shift-Hold button. R-1 is my throttle.
