Top split A+ NA lobby, last race of the night. Disconnected lap 3 p5 and setting good pace to boot. Last week same thing happened. I've been racing daily and in several league races even earlier today with no issues.

So frustrating. Time spent practicing down the drain. DR loss to boot.

Also, despite what it says on the website, damage in GT1 is HEAVY, as usual.

I've been spending the morning trying out different cars in Free Practice. The BMW M6 -- Sprint and Endurance -- are dominating the ranking boards. Of the cars I've tried, it is definitely among the top in terms of lap times. I've found that the Lexus and AMG '20 cars are similar in pace. Other cars I've tried were the Citreon, Mazda, Suzuki, and Toyota (old GT500). None of them were anywhere close to my best times.

My best time right now is in the AMG, with a 1:45.8 (I think). It was also the last one I tried, so it probably benefited from be getting better at driving the track. Regardless, it isn't great. I'm feeling like I'm going to have to improve my pace considerably if I want to be competitive on Saturday.
 
What do suppose the ideal strategy will be for this last round at Watkins Glen? I’m thinking of using a combination of mediums and softs, especially since the tire wear is the same as the recent round at Monza.

I’ll likely do what I did last time, where I’ll pick between the mediums and softs depending on whether I qualify towards the front or the rear. But that said, there doesn’t seem to be a requirement to use more than one compound. Maybe I could just use softs for the whole thing? I mean, I may as well if I was planning to pit anyway.

There is. See @tankuroded's post from earlier. 'Required Tire Type Change' is set to 'On', which means you need to use at least two of the allowed compounds.

Ah, sounds good. In which case, I think doing something like 9 laps on mediums then the remaining 11 of softs should work, right?

That would satisfy the requirements. I have no idea if the softs will actually last that long, though.
 
My short list of cars for this race is:

In terms of raw pace, the Toyota had the best lap in Free Practice. The big question for me is how the tires hold up in each of the cars. I'm planning to test each of these in a full length race to see how they compare.

I've only done one test race so far, on the Genesis. If that car is at all representative, then running an RS-RM combo could be pretty tight in some cars. The softs only lasted 7 laps in that car with 10% tread left when I pitted. And after 13 laps on the RMs to finish the race, the front left tire was down to 25%.

I'll post detailed results once I've gone through all the cars. Thankfully, tomorrow is a holiday here in Canada, so I'm hoping to have something to share sometime tomorrow.
 
I did some TT laps in the Supra, and after about five did a 43.49. Jumped in the BMW and first lap out did a 43.48; then a couple laps later was in the 43.2s. I can see why the BMW is showing up a lot on the top car lists.

Then for shrimps and giggles, I jumped in the Mustang as I like that car: 44.3. :lol: Man PD killed that thing. I also want to try the Genny as I've been getting along with that car at RBR.

Sad fact of the matter is, I don't think I am going to have time to do any of these on Saturday. Just too much going on, which is a bummer as this was the only round of Nations I really wanted to do. We shall see if anything changes between now and then...

So it will be the AMG or M6 for me in my only NC race 😅 Probably will go with the M6 because I usually do well in it and it drives a bit better (for me at least)

Hopefully the next MC and NC will be better and, above all, longer.

tested 3 cars, and they are pretty even. although personally the Genesis feels the smoothest to drive.

race simulation has about the same results as your test. Soft tyres last about 7 laps.
 
Did some more hot laps, five laps per car:

-The Genesis is not for me here. Best I could managed was a 44.0.

-GT-R might be a dark horse here. 43.6 so still a chunk off the BMW (for me) but if I recall, it is very good on tires. At least it used to be, I've lose track post 1.49.

-Ford GT 18 was also a pleasant drive. 43.9 so not amazing pace, but it was very planted through the bus stop and thru that tricky uphill right hander. Not so sure about running an MR car when tire wear will be a big factor; however, I remember the GT 18 being pretty good on tires for an MR (ie, like the McLaren and not like the Ferrari/Audi/Lambo).
 
I've gone through my short list of cars in full-length custom races with tire wear and fuel consumption. For all of them, I started on RS tires and drove until I felt I couldn't do another lap. Then I ran the rest of the race out on RMs. For most of the cars that was 7 laps on RSs and 13 on RMs. For the Lexus and Toyota, it was only 6 laps -- though I misjudged the Toyota and got caught out on the seventh lap with a spent tire.

The BMW had the best total time. It has great pace and seemed to be least affected by tire wear on its RM stint. I feel like this is the car for me.

For the Lexus, I had a great stint on softs -- fast and consistent lap times -- but it only lasted 6 laps. Performance really fell off for the RMs in the second stint.

The Genesis had some fast laps, but I struggled with consistency. I found it had a tendency to unpredictably understeer off. It was my least favourite of the cars to drive.

I couldn't get the AMG or Toyota to go. I don't know if was fuel weight or what. The Toyota obviously had a problem when I stayed out on softs too long and blew the tire, but even ignoring that, it wasn't doing well.

Going in, I assumed an RS-RM strategy would be the optimal one, but now I'm not so sure. The performance drops off so soon on the softs. I'm wondering if an RM-RH might turn out to be faster overall. I'll have to do some more tests.

Just tried the Hards myself after having the exact same train of thought and it came out slower.

I'm using the 2018 Nissan and did 35:58 going 7S/13M, then 36:08 going 10H/10M. I caught the AI in an awkward place after the pit stop on the Hards run and lost a bit of time there, but not 10 seconds worth.

The Hards feel nicer because you actually get to have consistent lap times for a while instead of suffering the massive drop off at the end of each stint running the Softs and Mediums. I can't see it being faster though unless the tyre degradation is so high you completely off a set of Softs and Mediums before the end.
 
I did a couple mock races myself, one with the 18 GTR and one with the Ford GT 18. I think we all know the M6 is going to be good, so need to see what else may be competitive.

I don't know how you're all getting seven laps on the RS in the Nissan, but my LF died half way through lap six. I put RMs on at the end of six and the LF died at the end of lap 19. Those couple laps were brutal. My best lap was a 45.0 and the overall time was a 36:03.

I then tried the Ford GT 18. Although my fastest lap was a 45.4 I was able to get seven laps out of the RS with some white within the LF to spare. Pit on lap seven, got RMs; at the end of 20 laps there was quite a bit of tire life left in the LF. Even though my fastest lap was .400" slower my overall time was ~11 seconds better at a 35:52.

Now in the Ford I didn't push the tires into the red like I did the Nissan because, well, I didn't think I needed to. 11 seconds pace due to better tire wear is substantial.
 
Speaking of time of day, I hadn't actually changed mine when I did my custom races. Those were both on Afternoon...

Just done another at Sunset going 13M/7S (so same as the first attempt but with reversed stints) and somehow improved 11 seconds to a 35:47. Kind of wondering if I was just that much more consistent, or if the combination of changing conditions and using the Mediums first made a difference...

Comments/observations:
  • I switched from the Sprint model to the Endurance one after finding that it was faster for me. I didn't really expect it to make that much of a difference, but it ended up being 8 seconds between the 14RM-6RS (Endurance) and 7RS-13RM (Sprint), which much more than I expected. This, of course, means that we aren't really comparing apples to apples any more. My apologies to science.
  • It's looking like a one-stop RS-RM strategy wins over both the RM-RH and the two-stop RM-RS-RS strategy, at least for me.
  • I'm feeling like I'm on the slow end of the spectrum on this combo. I expect that's probably helping my tires last longer than they would if I was able to get around the track faster.
  • If memory serves, I was using a time/weather setting of Sunset, S08 (equal conditions mode), but I'm not at the console at the moment, so can't check. I'll post a correction later if turns out to be different. [Edit: No correction necessary. Those are the settings.]

Holy schnikes, it's no wonder the BMW is META. Just did a test run with the M6 End edition, 7RS to 13RM. Ran +4/+5 BB to help that LF tire.

Overall time it was over 12 seconds faster (35:40.0) than the Ford GT 18 (35:52.3 (which was 11 seconds faster than the GTR though I think I could do better in that car now that I know what I know)). Not only that but it wasn't until lap 15 (eight full laps on the RMs) where my lap time of 45.7 was slower than the fastest time in the GT 18 (which was lap two while on the RS tires, at a 45.4); fastest lap in the M6 was a 44.6. So it took 15 laps in the M6 to just start being slower than the GT 18 at its fastest. No wonder there was a 12 second difference at the end (~.600" delta, per lap!).

So the M6 is great on a one lap TT/quali lap, and is also great over the whole race distance. I may try the Supra as it was the second fastest TT car for me. But, I don't believe it's very good on tires. At least it wasn't pre 1.49.

Ran the M6 and qualified 7th.

My race was remarkably well behaved and my pace was good and consistent. I ran 13 on mediums and 7 on softs. A lot of the others ran 8 hards and 12 mediums. One of the NPCs did a 6s7s7s but couldn’t make up enough time to compensate for the 4 minute penalty (lol).

When all the strats had played out I was p5 with a world tour finalist in p6 and a medium runner in front of me.

I ran down p4 on lap 18 but got passed by the NPC on lap 19. Lap 20 was tough on very worn rubber and I dropped back to 6th.

Crossed the line in a very satisfying p6 only to see both p4 and p5 had 4 minute pens.

P4 for 286 points and easily my best ever GTWS finish.

Gt2 League, mid DRB ranking. Qualified 5th and decided to start on mediums to see if 2nd stint is on soft or hard. After the start many of the soft starters overtook me. After 10 laps I went for hard, because I think I could not make the soft live long enough. Came back in 6th and was overtaken by some medium runners. Many who went for soft and medium had to pit a second time, so after a few laps I came back up to P6. Caught nearly the 5th in the last lap, but he didn't read the notes (and another one in front of him) so they got 4 min penalty and I became 4th for 92 points.

Thinking about launching a training academy to ensure my legacy lives on. 🤣
 
Ok so today morning, it was bit argy but a fun GTWS race notheless.

Managed to achieve 4th astsrtign from a qualifying 8th place. Lower C lobby 10am slot. I used my Vantage GT3. I always get good consistency with this car.

Had a tense battle with alot of 911 RSR's on thsi track but I prevailed and my outcome was pretty good. Alot of ppl spun out and that helped me gain some postions, the 1st place guy Angel in a 911 RSR was seriusly rapid.

I think i netted 31 points or sumthing and lets see what my overall is now for this Nations championship.
