1080p is more than double the pixels so obviously that.

Yes, but isn't it possible that 4K (8 million pixels) downsampled to a 720p image could possibly look a little bit better than an 1080p image?

Depends on screen size. 720p is crap even with pro supersampling, and you dont need supersampling in sub 43" 1080p. That said i dont see reason using 720p in 2018.. If budged forces to crappy 720p tv forget buying ps4 and just buy a prober tv.

Then.. If you have plans for tv update later, then you really should use the few bucks to PS4 Pro and use old tv..

I play on a 720... and played on a 1080 on a friend of mine last week. And what a difference! Looks ands feels so much better. My LG 720 seems to have a bit of lag. Only if it's like 0.1 sec or less, i can feel it. On the 1080 of that friend it felt so direct and precies! Gotta have one!

Lag is the #1 spec of gaming tv. Ranges everywhere between 8-130ms. Even some midrange 4k might have over 100ms hdmi input lag. Sub 40ms is acceptable sub 20ms is good.

I think 4k will always look better downsampled to 1080p than 720p, simply because it is an exact multiple of 1080p. The poll has no options for a PS4 Pro running in 1080p DS'd to 720p, or running in 4k & DS'd to 1080p or 720p. All of which would produce differing results. If the PS4 Pro was running at 4k & was downsampled to 720p, there would be less aliasing compared to a standard PS4 running at 1080p on a 1080p TV. Whether it would look any better or not would be subjective, & down to many more factors than just aliasing.

EDIT: Also, I have a 10 year old budget 720p TV & am really happy with it. It has a great looking picture, & I've never noticed any problems with lag (if there is any it's not discernible). I've used my PS3 & PS4 on it without any problems for several years now.

Here is a novel idea. Don't spend any money yet.

At this late stage of the product cycles save for a 4K TV and wait for the PS5 to drop. It is supposed(?) to be backwards compatible with PS4 games.

Once you have played GT Sport on a PS4 Pro with a 4K TV you wont want anything else.

PS I did not answer the survey as there were insufficient options. I wouldn't do either because you did not say what you had now.

Depends if you want to favor smoothness or pretty graphics.

That said it's more applicable to PC gaming but consoles are also do that to some extent.

I'd go for the PS4 Pro, personally, and then upgrade the TV at a later date.

With regards to the OP's question, standard PS4 on a 1080p screen will almost always look better - with the exception of some REALLY shoddy 1080p TVs...

If I had a standard PS4 that was working trouble free without question I would at least upgrade the TV to a 1080p and better yet to a 4k.

The pro model ps4 I think will add absolutely nothing to the 720p graphics wise while upgrading to a better tv will add greatly to the image quality over what you have now if you buy a quality tv.

Most everything advantage wise the pro offers over the standard PS4 to my understanding is related to graphics and better frame rates at the higher demands that the 4k require along with lighting differences of the HDR which again is only available on the 4K TV.

Lighting hdr and contrast enhancement s. Not really worried when the increased frame rate makes the game feel better to play.
I don't like playing in uhd, the textures suck and so does the frame rate

4K for sure. A good one can upscale 1080p content to look way better.
Agree.. love how they have the option to favour fps or quality, done games are better with fps n some others with quality.. GTs definitely better on fps week for me anyways
