GT World Championship - The Write-up

It looks like I’ll face off against the big three: The Nissan R390, The Toyota GT-One and the Mazda 787B. So in accordance with these cars, I’m taking the Zonda Race car in against them.

I configured the Zonda like this:
Stock except for T3 slicks, and the NA stage 1 tune-up. I bought the stage 1, but did not install it as I wanted to run with the pack, not out run the pack.

Grand Valley Speedway

Settings
Springs: 16.4/14.8
Ride height: 55/ 62
Shock Bound: 5/6
Shock Rebound: 7/8
Camber 3.4/1.7
Toe: 0.0/-1.0
Stabilizers: 5/5
Brakes: 19/16
LSD: 8/18/16
Final Drive: 4.300
Auto Setting: Level 37
Down Force: 1.00/1.25
ASM & TCS = 0

Qualified with a 1’45.601. This put me on the pole by 2.454 seconds. Sad that I’m running stock against some of the best cars in the game, and not having a problem slaughtering them,

Pit schedule:
Toyota GT-One: lap 5
Zonda Race car (Me): lap 6
Esperante: lap 7
GT40: lap 8
787B: didn’t pit
R390 GT1: didn’t pit

Results:
787B: + 3.021
R390 GT1 LM car: +13.238
Toyota GT-one: + 28.244
Esperante: + 1’33.384
GT40: 1’41.201

Best Lap: 1’45.114
Total Time: 18’12.743
Average lap: 1’49.274

I should have run my Final drive much higher, as I never hit 6th gear. I lost the lead when I pitted on lap 6, but regained it on lap 9, at the corner after the second hairpin.

Apricot Hill Raceway II

Settings:
Auto Setting: Level 33
Change to Super Slicks.
Left everything else the same
I qualified in second place with a 1’16.622, more than a ½ second off the pole.

Pit Schedule:
Toyota GT-one: 5
Esperante: 7
GT40: 8
The R390 GT1 LM car, 787B and I did not pit.

Best lap: 1’15.901
Total Time: 13’01.689
Average lap: 1’18.169

Special Stage Route 5 II
Ran one qualifying lap and landed on the pole with a 1’18.695. Second place was down by 4.420 seconds.
I turned the Auto Setting down one more notch to level 32, and turned the rear toe to 0.5 then jumped into the race. I had a very good launch this time, but still slipped to 4th at the first corner. I made it back into the lead just after the first left/right/left combo (in the canyon)

Pit Schedule:
Toyota GT-one: lap 7
Esperante: lap 9
GT40: lap 8
The R390 GT1 LM car, 787B and I did not pit.

Trial Mountain
I qualified with a 1’21.702, landing the pole by 1.606 seconds

Pit Schedule:
Toyota GT-one: lap 6
Esperante: lap 8
GT40: lap
The R390 GT1 LM car, the GT40, 787B and I did not pit.

R390 GT1 LM car: + 18.656
787B: + 19.098
Toyota GT-one: + 39.726
GT40: +1’23.384
Esperante: + 1 lap

Best lap: 1’19.540
Total Time: 13’32.706
Average lap: 1’21.271

My tires had a slight tinge of orange to them. I’ve tried running the T3 tires, for a bit better grip, but they seem to wear out in 7 or so laps. I wish there was a T2.5 tire. Possibly, PD could develop a “Slide” tire selector. Much like the Auto Setting Gear. As you adjust the stickiness of the tire, it will cost you more money.

Deep Forest Raceway
I landed the pole by 1.051 seconds with a 1’10.529 qualifying run.

Pit Schedule:
Toyota GT-one: lap 6
Esperante: lap 8
GT40: lap 9
The R390 GT1 LM car, 787B and I did not pit.

Results
787B: + 17.354
R390 GT1 LM car: + 22.894
Toyota GT-one: + 25.784
Esperante: + 1 lap
GT40: + 1 lap

Best lap: 1’08.378
Total Time: 11’49.517
Average lap: 1’10.952

I dropped to second place at the launch, in the midst of the first quadrant, the R390 beat my rear bumper, and side panels, enough for me lose traction and nearly spin. I ended up in last position. I then exacted some retribution by laying him into the wall, and dropping him to fourth place. I regained the lead in the 5th lap.

I am now leading the points race by 24 points.

Test Course
I dropped down force off and lengthened the Auto Set gearing to 36. It was at this point that My Hp began to drop off, and that was the last of my hope of out running the 787B. I was 1.9 seconds down at the midway marker in my qualifying lap. I could keep with the R390 easily, but the 787B simply had more straightaway power. I added in my Stage 1 NA and jumped to nearly 850 hp. I didn’t bother qualifying at this point, so I started from the bottom of the pack. With the additional power, I had to lengthen the Auto Setting out to 40. I also reset the camber to: 2.8/0.0, and the toe at 0.0/0.0.

I did have to qualify, as I wasn’t sure I’d be able to make up the time difference starting in last place. Even with the extra 220Hp, the 787B is a formidable opponent. I took the pole by less than 2/10ths of a second.

Pit Schedule:
Nobody pitted in this race.

Results
787B: + 1.179
R390 GT1 LM car: + 1’08.568
Toyota GT-one: + 1’08.577
GT40: + 1’21.137
Esperante: + 1’21.138

Best lap: 1’47.141
Total Time: 18’04.414
Average lap: 1'48.441

My best run was my qualifying run, due to my oil light coming on in the middle of the 2nd lap.

An odd thing happened. I was able to jump out to a 1.1XX second lead at the start, and was then unable to gain any time on the 787B. My laps were all pretty close 1’47.5XX or 1’47.6XX. yet I never gained or lost time to the 787B. I’ll have to watch the replay to check for AI cheating. After reviewing the replay, I found the 787B was not cheating, he was hitting his rev limiter.

As for times, that’s a pretty race between the R390 and GT-One, as well as the GT40 and the Esperante.

I dropped off from 856 hp to 836.

Special Stage Route 11 II
I returned the settings to prior to the Test Course.
Also dropped off the NA Stage 1 Tune-up. I’m now at 638 hp.

In the qualifying I’m running way behind 1st place, but slightly ahead of 3rd place. The GT-one is on the pole by 2.5+ seconds. I figure he’s going to have to pit, so it’s not a big issue. I change the toe on the rear from 0.5 to -1.0. I also know that I can go 17 laps on a set of Super Slicks. So slicks will give me a bit more traction, last just about the right length of time, and give me just enough to get ahead of the R390.

Pit Schedule:
Toyota GT-one: lap 6
Esperante: lap 8
The GT40, R390 GT1 LM car, 787B and I did not pit. My front tires were a light shade of orange, so it was worth it to run those instead of the T2’s.

Results
R390 GT1 LM car: + 4.192
Toyota GT-one: + 11.860
787B: + 22.849
GT40: + 1’22.298
Esperante: + 1’25.957

Best lap: 1’52.512
Total Time: 19’13.155
Average lap: 1’55.316

The R390 was all over me through out the race, at one point dropping me to third place. I wasn’t able to take the lead until the GT-one pitted on lap 6. At that point I was trailing by over 8 seconds. Up until the last lap I was leading the R390 by less than 2 seconds. I stretched my lead out to in the last ½ lap of the race. As you can see by the times, the 787B’s speed worked against it for this race. Even with the GT-one taking a pit, the 787B was still in third place.

At this point I’m 35 points in the lead. I could quit out of the next three races and sweep the series. However, I’ve got no real stake in which car I win so I’m going to run it straight through.

Tokyo Route 246
I jumped on the qualifying, and landed in 4th place with a 1’33.774. Over 4 seconds off the pole. My car set-up is right on, it just seems that the AI has gotten their mysterious “Boost near the end of the series”. The 787B whipped by me like I was standing still. Time to add on the Stage 1 NA and see how that works. I had to lengthen the Auto Gear setting to level 35.

Pit Schedule:
Toyota GT-one: lap 5
Esperante: lap 7
GT40: Lap 9
The R390 GT1 LM car, 787B and I did not pit. My front tires were a light shade of orange, so it was worth it to run those instead of the T2’s.

Results
R390 GT1 LM car: + 0.446
787B: + 13.353
Toyota GT-one: + 19.265
Esperante: + 1 lap
GT40: + 1 lap

Best lap: 1’28.141
Total Time: 15’15.605
Average lap: 1’31.561

I should have run Super Slicks at this circuit. My front tires were red when I crossed the finish line. At the start of lap 8, I was 12 seconds in the lead. I spun it out in the first corner, and had to nurse the last lap on red tires. That accounts for the poor showing. I took the lead at the big sweeping 180, and held it through out the race.

Cote d'Azur
Didn’t touch the settings, other than set TCS = 1
I landed the pole with a 1’31.724. 4.705 seconds up on 2nd place. I’ll remove the NA Stage 1 tune-up because it’s overkill and go back to Super Slicks, as this is a 15 lap race.

Pit Schedule:
Toyota GT-one: lap 8
Esperante: lap 11
GT40: Lap 13
The R390 GT1 LM car, 787B and I did not pit.

Results
787B: + 34.762
Toyota GT-one: + 35.537
R390 GT1 LM car: + 53.790
Esperante: + 1 lap
GT40: + 1 lap

Best lap: 1’31.724
Total Time: 23’53.313
Average lap: 1’35.54

I simple ran away from the pack.

Grand Valley Speedway II
I landed the pole, 5.012 seconds up on 2nd place with a 1’43.848
This is running stock, with Super slicks. I’ve also run my oil down so the Zonda sits at 638hp.

Pit Schedule:
Toyota GT-one: lap 5
Esperante: lap 7
GT40: lap 8
The R390 GT1 LM car, 787B and I did not pit.

Results
R390 GT1 LM car: + 38.033
787B: + 49.699
Toyota GT-one: + 58.690
Esperante: + 1 lap
GT40: + 1 lap

Best lap: 1’43.848 (qualifying lap)
Total Time: 18’01.208
Average lap: 1’48.121

Results of the Series
Me: 100 points
R390 GT1 LM car: 49 points
787B: 49 points
Toyota GT-one: 32 points
Esperante: 16 points
GT40: 14 points

I walk away with a 250,000 and a jaguar XJ220.

Thoughts
This was not an all together tough race series. The Zonda Race car is a hidden gem in the game that does not get enough credit. As I showed in this series, it can hold it’s own with the big three. Even running stock, it’s a formidable car.

So I rack up 350,000 (35,000 per race) and 250,000 for the series. 600,000cr haul + the Jaguar Race car. Went to the oil change shop, 638hp before, 670hp after.

I Gotta say Der Alta I like your write-ups. When you first started these write-up things I thought you were crazy but im realy liking them now good job.

Eventually, I'm going to post the compendium in it's entirety here on GTplanet.

These write-ups for every race in the game from 0% to 100%

Glad to know you appreciate them. I've been a bit lax lately, doing some OLR, and the series races are the long ones (10+ laps, and 10 races...).

But I've only got 3 race series left to hit 100%. Polyphony Digital, Dream car, and Formula one series. I've got the RX-7 LM for the Dream Car championship and an F094/S for the Formula one series. I've no idea what to use for the PD series.

ANy suggestions that would keep it competitive?

thanks again,
AO

Im wondering do you type these up just from your brain to GTP, or do you type it into a word processor/text editor first?

Y2Tuscan:

I've got a laptop that sits next to me while I race. I take notes before/buring/after the race, and type it up immediately.

Currently the compendium stands at 145 pages, and a 1.5 meg MSword document. Which will turn into the Posted Compendium here on GTplanet. A very rudimentary preview is available on a geocities website: Compendium. Which I just realized, I have to update.

I'd be overjoyed if my memory was that good.

Yeah I was thinking "how does he remember all those settings and exact laptimes" I also had a vision of someone scribbling all this stuff on a small notepad.

At the moment ive been thinking of doing some car comparisons and reviews myself. But I havent picked up GT3 for a few months now.

Jump in and by all means give it a run. I was quite frustrated a few months ago (found out the AI cheat), and almost gave up. As an interesting thread look up the Axis vs. Allies thread in the Spot race forum.

It's an interesting theory that DolbyTone and Gil developed. It's somewhat of a not so serious OLR thread.

The compendium developed from my last game save as I got ready to run the Formula one series. I spent weeks looking around the web and the forums to find info on what car I needed, and how tough the competition was.
Not a scrap of info that I could use. There was plenty of "I beat the Trial Mtn with an R390/Gt-one/Viper..." but there was nothing that said "I beat it with a Lancer Evo and here's how..."

So I wrote out the notes for my Formula one race, and it all took off from there. I restarted (3rd time) and took notes from that point on. Often spending an hour or more, getting the bare minimum car to beat a given race. For instance, a stock NSX with only a new muffler to beat the Beginner GT championship. Or a Stock RX-7 LM car on Cote D'Azur Enduro (facing off against the R390). An additional note, is that I'm not the fastest guy (by far) on these tracks, so anyone can do what I've done.

So hopefully in the future, a racer can take a look through it, and figure well...if he could be it with this car, maybe I could do it with this other one.

Can we make a :mad note scribbling smilie: ?

The car comparisons would be a great addition. I ran the SSR11 in a Stock Pagani Race car on Super slicks, and was 3/4 of a lap ahead of the GT-one. It's those hidden gems that make GT3 so much fun. For instance, the 150,000cr challenges have shown that the best bang for the buck is a Corvette Z06.

I remember you having a big thread on the AI cheating (or was that neon duke?) but this Axis vs Allies thread is actually quite simmilar to what I was going to do (well apart from the WW2 theme) because after I 100% gt3 I started buying random cars 2 cars I bought were the Tickford Falcon and the Lister Storm, basically I went round several tracks and set some laptimes with different settings and tunings (mind you I never tried different tyres) to see which was the fastest out of the two cars.

There was plenty of "I beat the Trial Mtn with an R390/Gt-one/Viper..." but there was nothing that said "I beat it with a Lancer Evo and here's how..."

I understand, I have always been good at judging the competition of AI races so, I can get the most challenge out of the game.

Or a Stock RX-7 LM car on Cote D'Azur Enduro.

Hehe I did that one in the calsonic skyline with a spec 1 or 2 turbo (600/700bhp)
