GTPlanet.net Virtual Stock Exchange Competition!

oh, and im praying a few of these big bucks stocks dont implode on me. i think i accidentally bought a bunch of shares at the stock's peak price. <_<. problem is.....the stock quotes that i use as a buying reference are TOTALLY different from the actual performance of the shares that i buy.

is it another glitch?

[n00b question] What exactly is equity?[/n00b question]

And also, is the gain/loss display in the portfolio the gain/loss for the day, or is it compared to when you purchased the stock?

Equity in this case (but not the exact definition) is the combined value of all of the stocks you own, plus all of the cash you have left in your account.

In real life equity has several meanings in economics. Equity can mean "fairness" in relation to the economy. Equity can also mean the ownership interest in a company (usually stocks etc.). Equity can also be the difference between the fair market value of property and the amount still owed on its mortgage. (i.e. home equity loan).

For the purpose of this competition, equity is the first definition I gave. Also, the gain/loss listed in the portfolio is compared to when you first purchase the stock. It includes the commissions -- so if you make $4.00 on a stock, it will say -$3.00 because of the $7 commission rate. On the other hand, if you make $15, you will you see $8, again because of commissions.

Huh? I don't get it. It's always decreasing the closer it gets.

I'll explain...

If you look at "bad example" you'll see that for the current quarter, the estimate 90 days ago was EPS of $0.38. The current estimate, however, is only $0.32. It decreased -- so we move on.

If you look at "good example #1" you'll see that for the current quarter, the estimate 90 days ago is $0.79 and remains the same all the way until the current estimate. This is good -- it shows stability.

If you look at "good example #2" you'll see that for the current quarter, the estimate 90 days ago is $2.05, but the current estimate is $2.35. That is good because it shows that the company is exceeding expectations.

Depending on your strategy, you will want to look at "Current Quarter", "Next Quarter", "Current Year", "Next Year", or all of them. My strategy, however, only uses the "Current Quarter" estimates to determine how well analysts thing the company is doing in the current quarter.

Wow. I am the most unlucky person in the world. Stupipd Microsoft. Symantec plummeted today. I hate my luck! My other stcok went up 5.5% while symantec went down a freakin 6%!

:banghead::mad::irked: #$%^@#&!11
Symantec kicked my ass today too.

That's an average anyway...If it crashes again then there's no point. This is within a time limit remember, so we should be investing in companies who should start peaking whenever this contest closes (which is when btw?).

I think I set the time length to 1 year.

can you invest in commodities?

i need to find commodity corps, because they look like the best way to go in the long run. commodities like sugar and stuff will never lose significant value because we need them every day.

I don't think we can directly invest in the commodities themselves, but I'd guess a good alternative would be to invest in a company that deals in a commodity of interest. I'd wait to hear Mrkt's opinion on this though.

No, you cannot invest in commodities. Only stocks and mutual funds. All of this information can be found on the FAQ Section of the VSE website.

As a matter of clarification, there is no such thing as a "commodity corp". And yes, commodities such as sugar CAN lose significant value. It is more a matter of market conditions than it is of public need.

not significant like worldcom significant. lol.

i know there is no such thing as a commidity corp, i was just joking around with that one....but dont the steel companies sell their product to automakers and etc. as kind of a commodity?

Correct.

but I'd guess a good alternative would be to invest in a company that deals in a commodity of interest.

These are few and far between as most corporations today have a wide variety of products. Commodities are extremely volatile in comparison to stocks.

I'd wait to hear Mrkt's opinion on this though.

:D  👍

WorldCom went bankrupt because of their accounting practices. :ill: You're right, though. No commodity can go bankrupt as far I know.

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking here?

but dont the steel companies sell their product to automakers and etc. as kind of a commodity?

like....steel companies...you know. they get the raw metals to produce the steel alloy which can then be sold as a commodity....i suppose.

basically what im asking is....does anybody know the big steel corps?

Joined in last night, and currently ranked second.

w00t! :dopey:

It's a mistake (sorry to be overly realistic :guilty: ). The real numbers will hopefully be adjusted otherwise I (or Event) will have to contact Tech Support in order to have them correct it.
