Yeah... today was just one of those days. :ill:
Yeah .. I lost like $28 today. I remember the days when I would lose $90 one day and then lose another $90 the next day .. and the process would continue.

That was my own dumbass fault, though.

Where should I start? (buying shares, that is)

If I were you, I'd start with companies that I know.

Then go to finance.yahoo.com.
Click symbol lookup.
Type in the name of the company.
Look it up.
The particular stock you are looking for will have the Name, Market, and Industry boxes filled. If there are any other companies listed, it's not the company you are looking for. For example, if you look up Dell, you'll see 3 different stocks. You're only interested in the DELL. Click that stock symbol (in this case, DELL).
Next, click on analyst opinion (look to the left tab with the long list).
Make sure the mean recommmendation summary is 2.5 or better. The lower the number the better (ex: 2.2, 1.7, 1.5 etc.).
Make sure the price target (mean or median) is HIGHER than the current price.
Next, go to analyst estimates.
Scroll to EPS trends. Make sure it's flat or increasing from the "90 days ago" figure to the "current" figure.
Next, scroll to growth estimates and make sure that the number is higher than the industry figure.

After that, go to money.msn.com's stock research page. Type in the symbol and read the entire report.

Do this for a few stocks and pick which one you think is the best. That's the best way to start. Good luck.

Damn Brian .. I thought you were comin to get me.

You're kinda going in the wrong direction man .. :sly:

But thats perfectly alright with me .

I'm glad you're ahead of someone who hasn't even logged in in over 4 months :sly:

I'm more concerned about Brian though, he's the one who actually knows what he's doing.

I think ...

 I had a bit of a problem with a short sell transaction. Since the quotes are delayed 30 minutes after the market opens, I couldn't buy to cover in time to make a profit -- instead, I took a huge loss. In real life I would have made a profit because in real life these transactions take place in real time (as opposed to delayed quotes). That's what happened. No more short selling for me. :ill: Since that "sting" I haven't touched the portfolio. We'll see what happens in a few weeks.

Pardon the noob question, but I saw my flatmate's friend recently and he was sorting out his real portfolio on his laptop, and it seemed he was making quite a bit of cash... so I've a couple of quick dumb questions..

1. HOw long does it take to learn how to trade (play this game you've got)?

and

2. Are you rich in real life*? ;) (through trading?) *You don't have to answer that?!

I think new rankings are in order. :)

Oh and Brian, uh, whats going on man? You're kinda broke.

Kinda? I'm very broke! :dopey:

I tried to short shares in a stock that I was sure would go down... and it did. All was well. However, because of the stupid "20 minute delay" for the orders, I couldn't buy to cover in time and ended taking a massive hit. :ill:

I will never short shares again unless I can buy to cover within a reasonable time.

evilgenius788
Any chance you you selling those Apple stocks soon?
I might be selling one set of the shares, it depends on if I find any other profitable investments. I've only got like $15 in actual cash.

Ouch. That sucks.

I'm just glad that none of my stocks have really tanked it in the past few months because I haven't traded anything since like april.

edit:

I have found what appears to be a fairly viable profit opportunity so I will be selling 16 share of my stock in Apple when the markets open tomorrow morning. Then buying as many shares of that stock as I can.
