Helo guys!

So my mom bought me a case to be used as a External HD. All it needs is a notebook HDD which of course she has as well. Two older work notebooks died and the company she works at gave her the hard drives inside those machines. One of those hard drives she already uses with another case she already had.

Right now, this second hard drive can't be formatted. Windows can't complete it, be it the fast or complete format. I tried in the case she gave me, in the case she already had, nothing.

Does anyone know a program or another way to try and format this HDD?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest the reason the laptop it came from died is because its HDD is what died.

If Windows can see the drive, and starts to finish it, but is unable to complete it, most likely reason I know if is the drive is defective.

Does sound like that HDD might be defective, Windows disk management should be able to detect and format the drive with ease. If you check the brand of the HDD you might be able to download some diagnostic tools (like Seatools) to check if the drive really has issues.

The other very remote possibility is that the drive isn't playing nice with that particular case/caddy although it's unlikely.

Correct. If you received a HDD case, your best bet is to buy a new hdd to go into the drive itself.
