Help with LG plasma purchase needed !!

Hi, I wondered if any of you guys could help me out. I am buying a new TV, I've had my trusty old Sony Trinitron 26" for far too long now !!!!

I am particularly looking at a 37" LCD HD. The 2 models I have been advised to look at are LG and Hitachi (if you know any reason why I shouldnt then please let me know!)

I am keen on the LG RZ37LZ55, I have been to the shop, seen it working etc.... I have also seen an LG 37LZ55, the RZ is missing off the front, but I cant work out if they are actually 2 different models or infact the same one, I've tried to compare the 2 but cant seem to find much difference.

The TV has 600 cdm/2 brightness, 1366*768 pic, 1200:1 res, its sound is listed as SRS WOW/NICAM 600, I might be wrong or out of date here but is that better than dolby digital 5.1?

The TV's main use will be for my X-Box 360 and watching sport, not primarily for DVD's etc.....

This TV is available at Dixons for under 1K delivered, I thought that was a great deal.

ps - For those of you who remember me I got married 2 weeks ago and just got back from honeymoon !

First off, congrats on the newlywed status. Sorry I missed it before. :)👍

Since I don't like reading reviews, I look at pictures:

I filtered the selection by screen size and shape and left all other options as "Don't Care" (Inputs, outputs, ease of use, etc.) and got these results off of Consumer Reports. Prices are in USD and I'm not sure what you have available in the UK. They only have one LG, model 37LP1D. It received a rating of 52, clocking in at $2200. :scared:

Plasma will give you a better picture quality, but LCD will avoid the dreaded video game burn-in.

I hope that helped, or if nothing else didn't confuse you even more.

Thanks mate. I bought the TV anyway, the first shop I saw it advertised it was £1200, I hunted around and bought it for £920 !!!

I havent played my 360 on it yet but I plan to do so this weekend, cant wait !!!

I think you should have waited for the 1080p LCD's to come out, because there contrasts will be way higher. But if you waited even longer, then wait for OLED or laser HDTV's.

What, like you did? ;)

Congrats on the purchase, BigJamesGTI!

Thanks Jon. I could have waited but its like when you buy anything such as a TV or a new stereo, you buy it then theres something better released soon after you buy it, it'll always happen.

I do have just one complaint about it though, when I watch the footie or rugby league, the shots of the whole pitch the players do look a bit jagged around the edges - but on the close-up shots they are fine.

Its awesome in HD on the 360 though and thats the main reason I bought it I guess !!

Congrats! :)

Haven't seen you around in a long time ;)

Thanks 👍 Good to see that someone remembers me!!!

I have been taken over by the beast that is the Xbox then the 360 !! I haven't played GT3 or 4 for as long as I can remember. I sold the PS2 along with the original Xbox a few months ago.

btw I have played the 360 on the HDTV and its awesome, I've played football manager 2006, although this doesnt really have any graphics to deal with, the letters and colors are amazing. The best game I've played on it is Kameo, its just so real - I am officially hooked, I love my 360 and my new TV. If you are thinking of going HD or thinking of getting a 360 then do it NOW !!!

So Im loving the TV still but Im wanting to sort out the sounds. With my old Sony I had 2 speakers I could hard wire into the back of the TV - I stuck them kind of behind me and it sounded great. It wasnt dolby surround sound or anything like that I think it was just stereo.

The thing is I can get a LG 5.1 surround system for £99 - with the 4 surround speakers, centre one and the bass unit, this would just give me stereo surround sound when watching SKY, but Im toying with the idea of spending more and getting a better unit, but is it really worth it?

Surround sound is definately worth the money. 👍 I use surround sound for music/movies/gaming and I would never go back.

Do you mean you use dolby surround sound, as in if an enemy is behind you the sound will come out of the speakers behind you ? Or is it just stereo surround ?

Depending on the receiver/base unit, you can "force" all inputs to go to the full 5.1 setup. Sometimes it sounds like crap (like when I was upconverting 2.0 audio to 6.1 - I had the wrong DVD player setting. That's all fixed now.) Other times it sounds just fine.

As for spending more for a better unit, I guess it depends on the specs of the LG. If they are decent and this is your first outing into the world of surround sound, it might very welll be just fine. Personally, I prefer individual components - Receiver, DVD player, speakers - all purchased seperately.

With music it is stereo surround (Stereo x2 setting on my speakers) which just sends the same info to the front and rear channels. With gaming and movies it's fully Dolby 5.1 surround. 👍

I think I might just settle for the stereo surround sound of the LG surround unit - It looks great and will match the TV, I want it now and getting a better one would mean saving up and waiting and Im not the patient type when it comes to this kind of thing
