First of all, just thought I'd say hi, just found this site, and just got my GT4 on Friday, and my ultimate goal is to try and get every single car in the game, every version of every car. I've already got all golds on B and A license, and all silvers on I-B and close to all silver on I-A. Having fun with photo mode too, I'll be posting some pics I take soon.

Back to what I really posted for...............I've looked through multiple threads, and seen "official" car lists for the NTSC version, but for some reason all the lists show different numbers as for how many cars there really are. What is the REAL official number?? What's the confirmation on it too, doesn't Sony or PD have an official number they can give us??

I know it's there, and many other places, but I wanted to know which is the real official list. Thanks for clearing that up though, the list I have is 723. I've seen lists that go anywhere from 650 to 750.

I have 732 cars in my garage, but i´d say the real number is 728. No doubles at all that is. This is PAL though.

Without the useless (different model year) and nearly useless (different trim level) repeats, the real number is probably somewhere in the low/mid 600's. Maybe even lower.

and then, cut out those 400 different Evo's, Skylines and Imprezas..  and we have mere 300 cars or so.

Leonidae
and then, cut out those 400 different Evo's, Skylines and Imprezas..  and we have mere 300 cars or so.
...which is still more than what most of other games have

I've decided to create a condensed car list for GT4. I'm basically condensing any cars that share the same basic chassis/body. I'm trying to be fair and get as much as I can without going cross-generation, but that isn't so easy from this computer, not having GT4 handy (I'm at school), 'cause I can't really find a site with pictures of every car.

I've made it to Mitsubishi thus far, and have already trimmed the number from 750 to 573. I gotta go to class now, though, so I'll continue when I get home. :)

I'm going to create a car list of what I think should have been kept and what should have been lost.

Wanted to do this some time ago but never felt like taking the time nor did I have the energy.

If no one has posted by the time I am done, I will just edit this post.
Hope to have the list by the end of the night.
Till then,
-

Alright, I've got the condensed list. :)

Original list taken from here at GTPlanet. Total number of entries? 750.

Total number of truly individual cars, excluding mere power/engine/trim/bodykit/model-year differences? 380.

Still a lot more than pretty much any other game, but about half of the claimed figure. Yes, I went so far as to put racecars and tuner cars with their ordinary counterparts, and whatnot, but still...

Oct 13 2005: Missed the Eagle Talon/Mitsu Eclipse, and Cusco Advan Impreza.
Oct 14 2005: Verbal was kind enough to point out that the Astons were wrongfully grouped together.
Nov 10 2005: Scaff informed me that the '02 Megane is a newer chassis than the '02, and that the Renault Clio 2.0 16V was wrongfully thrown in with the V6 models.
Oct 31 2006: Bindlov noticed that the Volvo S60 was missing.

And that's the death of that car list!!! :sly: :guilty:
(just kidding with you)

But really, to comment on the idea of a car list.
First off, I will not be able to make one. :(
However, I can still lay out my suggested plan.

Create a color and body part editor. 👍
Then scrap all the junk cars like the Daihatsu Moves. :irked:
Then scrap all the "fake race cars." :dopey:
Finally, keep the remaining street cars and real world racers.

The thing about that is the idea of having fake race cars being built by the player.
Also, with a color editor it would be possible for every car in the game to be sold in "primer" color and then have user created paint schemes/ colors added to the car. 👍

With a body kit system and the color editor we wouldn't need PD to make dream cars for us, we could make them ourselves.

RUF Race Car here I come. :dopey: :mischievous:

But for real, the list could be chopped down by creating "base models" for each car.
Instead of minor cosmetic differences between a Nur R34 and a Mspec R34, "we" the users could just take care of it ourselves using the base R34 model.

Do that for each car worth keeping and you've got a forza killer with GT's spirit and style still inside. :D

This idea is very, very good IMO, except perhaps the removal of the lesser cars. I think their purpose is to make the better cars look even better, and also they are there so you can actually understand how good a supercar really is.

Alright, I've got the condensed list. :)

Original list taken from here at GTPlanet. Total number of entries? 750.

I salute you, because I always wanted to make a "condensed" list for GT2. I never got around to it.

However, I'd at least include the JGTC car and one of the road car as separate entries for a two reasons:
1) You can get a lot more power out of the race car.
2) The race car is sometimes a good bit lighter than the road car (ASL Garaiya excluded).

They drive like two different animals. But I won't convince you that a '91 NSX is much different than a '93 NSX, or that the cosmetic differences between the two AE86s translate to any sort of performance gains.

Precisely. That's what the fun of the original GT gave to us. You just have to understand that not one car was designed to win every type of race.

Except for the Pikes Peak Escudo in GT2, that thing would win any race hands down, what a bad idea to give it handling like it had.

Aston Martin DB7 Vantage Coupe ('00) Aston Martin DB9 Coupe ('03) Aston Martin V8 Vantage ('99) Aston Martin Vanquish ('04)
These are 4 totally different cars.

Lumping most of the race cars together with their street counterparts doesn't make much sense, appearance aside they're usually totally different animals. I'm not so sure about dismissing some of those 'mere power/engine' differences that easily, either.
But anyway, whether the real figure is 300 or 500, it's more than enough to have fun...

My intention was to simply group all cars that shared the same chassis, same generation, and same manufacturer (for example, the Evos were grouped by their true "generations," while I left the A3, TT, and Golf separate from each other). The racing/street combos make more sense when you consider the fact that Gran Turismo allows some very race-worthy modifications to the cars, and the fact that these racecars don't serve all that much of a purpose in the game (they're restricted from production-car-only races, and they're slower than other, more dedicated racecars, like the LMPs). Overall, I tried to make the condensation as fair and thorough as possible, so as to not discriminate against any specific make or model, so in the end I just decided to condense the hell out of pretty much any same-chassis models I could find. Sure, the M3 GTR has a V8, but does that make it completely different from a normal M3 or M3 CSL, and worthy of an extra count in the list? I don't think so. Sure, the R32 GT-R has AWD and the RB26DETT, while the R32 GTS-T has only RWD and an RB25DET, but does that make them more than just two different trim levels? The little amount of work it took the 3D modelers to change one into the other says "no."

That said, the list is simply a rough draft, thrown together in what I admit was a rush job. So, Verbal, don't take this next bit as a hostile challenge, because it's not. It's simply a friendly request :) : I admit that I don't know that much about Aston Martins, so if you can prove to me that the Aston Martins aren't just slight variations on the same exact chassis/model, I'll separate them and update the number. (btw, grouping the Astons together was a bit of a joke anyway. ;) )

You seem to have some duplicates in the list, is there a reason to that?

There are also some weird things, are there really two different Mazda 110S models?

These just caught my attention. :)

Congrats to Falango: not only had he found the search button , but also he hit on a topic that got onto page 2 in about 30 hrs!!

Welcome to GTP!

You'll go far, young Skywalker...

Well, yeah, but they drive differently, so they should count as seperate cars. I don't think 'being useful' for completing the game should be a criterion.
There's a lot of cars in the game that aren't strictly needed, but having fun driving them is a purpose as good as any to me (most of the time I'm just doing free runs on the Ring anyway).

If you just go by the looks that's true. I'd be more interested inhow they drive.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage ('99) : This was the high performance version of the Virage, the last of the old school coach built Astons introduced in the late 80s. Engine was a supercharged version of the old V8 first used in the DBS.

Aston Martin DB7 Vantage Coupe ('00): The DB7 was a new car introduced in the early 90s, based on a Jaguar platform (both companies are owned by Ford), with a straight six engine. In the late 90s it got a newly developed V12, this was the Vantage version.

Aston Martin Vanquish ('04): New top model above the DB7, introduced in '01.

Aston Martin DB9 Coupe ('03): DB7 replacement introduced last year. New chassis, same V12 as the Vanquish, but with less power.

That's surely no proof, but then I'm not interested in proving anything. Do some research, or you'll have to just take my word for it....

Haha, I know how it feels to get asked the same questions numerous times. I know there are tons of people out there that don't bother to use the search, or just don't know how to use it properly. I intend to go very far in this game, 100% with every car in my garage, break 300mph (want to since I've seen a thread about it), and give you guys some nice pictures to look at from my collection. I have been away from the series since GT2, and boy did I miss it! It's great to see what some people have done in this game, and the times people post are looking pretty amazing. I hope to be up there amongst soon.

I acquired the list from GTP, which contains some identical entries...the reason for this is that some cars are listed as both "New" and "Used"...including the Mazda 110S. :) Doesn't affect the condensed count, so whatever...

Checked Wikipedia, and you're right, the V8 Vantage is a completely different car. The DB7 Vantage, Vanquish, and DB9 are all similar, but the DB7 is a different generation DB. So, I'll split the marque into three. :)

Anyway, no need to be so serious about this...'tis all in good fun... ;) 👍

The Vantage version of the DB7 has a similar engine and has been styled by Ian Callum. That's all it has in common with the DB9 and Vanquish. DB9 and Vanquish may look similar, but the Vanquish is to the the (100,000$ cheaper) DB9 what, say, a ferrari 575 is to the 430. The DB9 is also 4 years younger and sits on Aston's new variable size platform, which is also used for the entry level V8 Vantage (in shorter form) as well as for the Vanquish successor which is due to come out in 3 years.[/quote]

I thought the '04 Vanquish was a special DB9...?

Yup, there are two different models because they have different engines.. 110S (10B) is slightly more powerful than (10A). maybe the B has better spark plugs on it, and no miles..

IIRC, one of the Cosmos is built on a longer wheelbase too. I'd check if my PS2 were with me.

Slightly still-on-topic, but the official US site is missing out on at least one car: the Sileighty.
