How many liters/gallons are the gas tanks in GT5?

I think 100 liters

This. Got it figured out when you pit and asks you how much fuel you want to refuel. The gas tank capacity is the same with every car, except hybrids or electric-powered cars.

You're right. That is roughly equivalent to a load of 75 Kg. Online (or where otherwise fuel consumption is enabled) this kills performance and messes up the handling of the lighter cars (for example around 650-700 Kg) which in real life are supposed to have 30-35 liters fuel tanks or even less in some cases. PD should have at the very least offered an option to choose how much fuel to put in the fuel tank before the race.

Does a noticeable change in handling really happen?
Ex. faster acceleration or better lap times?

After 25L is used up it seems that the performance does increase like the car has become somewhat lighter, but not by much.

The performance will increase, as I've been driving against the time with a friend of mine. We had a LFA with sports hard tires, managing 1:47ish on Fuji GT circuit, after the tank was nearly empty, we managed 1:44-45 on the same kind of tires (ofcourse after a few changes cuz they were worn out). After a refill, when the tank was empty, we needed 100 litres to fill up a whole tank.

I managed to get an MPG figure of about 1/2 mpg during the Indy 500 enduro in my X2010 Prototype. :p

Back on topic: all tanks are 100 liters, or about 25ish gallons

22 gallons Imperial, 26.4 gallons US.

Can you run out of gas is you just idle your car for a day or a long time?
Start a race.
Back up past the pit entrance.
Wait a while.
See how much fuel it wants you to add.
Tell us. ;)
