My sister is trying to access some of her university work from a memory stick. When she clicks on the item she wants to open into word, it comes up with two boxes, one saying something along the lines of "the command cannot be completed because the command box is open". So you click ok on that, and behind it is the liscence agreement thing. You accept that and then it says "there was an error opening the file". The file is saved as a 2007 document and the word on the computer is 2007, so what can we do?

This is very important and any help we can get will be really appreciated.

Thanks

Find a computer with a licensed copy of Microsoft Word 2007.

Have you tried moving it off of the memory stick and opening it from the desktop?

Ok, thanks I appreciate it.

The wierd thing is, when you look at the memory stick symbol in my computer "removable drive G:" or something it shows that it is empty. But if you click on it there is clearly stuff on it.
Some stuff opens, but others doesn't. The file is apparently corrupt and we have tried to restore it from an earlier copy but it wont work, because we only have the latest save on the memory stick.

EDIT: We can open it now, for some reason, but it's from the older save so she has lost like 3 hours of work. I'm assuming word has just restored the older one automatically and there is no way of getting the latest save back?

EDIT 2: We can't recover it, she's just gonna have to put up with it unfortunately, thanks for the help though.

Or try emailing the file it to a Hotmail account because you can open them through an online version of Word through it.

Its never a good idea to save uni work to one location, especially USB sticks which can corrupt easily! make sure you at least save it to 3 places every time you update the document!

The 2 last advices * 100

Save the documents in cloud or send it to your email and a generic save

And get LibreOffice or OpenOffice. It's free and if you liked Ms office before the simplification of 2007, that's the free way to go.

Libre-OpenOffice FTW
