Impulsive twitching in the presence of razors?

Oddly enough, when I sense the presence of a razor, the muscles in my lower left back pulsate and twitch uncontrollably, as does my neck. This is a pain in barber shops, as it is subsequently very difficult to cut the hair at the back of my head. Does anybody know why these nerves are firing off as such? This only occurs if I think about razors, so I think it must be psychological.

Are there any possible ways to correct this, without suggesting that I stop thinking about razors, as it is somewhat inevitable?

I cannot shave with a normal razor for some apparently psychological reason as well. I kind of twitch, but more like go into that mode where I lose awareness and everything feels like a dream. I don't know if there's a word for it.

BOO!!!

I'd never heard of xyrophobia before, but look on the plus side. At least you'll never be into cutting. :D

Tranquilizers...?

Ok seriously, it seems such an unusual case, it sounds very much psycological, unless your muscles really do sense the prescence of a razor (which would be very weird). I can only imagine the best thing to do is to see a psycologist to help you find a way of shutting it out of your mind, or perhaps even curing the phobia.

Perhaps you could ask you barber to use scissors, or are do you twitch when around all sharpe metallic implaments.

I used to get this feeling when I was younger, except it more of a tickling sensation that made me wanna arc my back and get away from the clippers. I don't get it anymore, I suppose I've grown out of it.

Ha-ha, very funny. That 'razor' makes something else tingle...

...and I cannot use sedatives in a public place, I am sorry to say.

When I was younger, when the barber would cut my hair with clippers or the small electric trimmer, my back would twitch. The closer to my ear it got, the more it twitched.

Now however, I shave my head with clippers every three weeks or so, so I've either grown out of it or got over it.

OMG! Same! 👍

I take the razors and put it in a small metal cup, fill it up with anything extremely flammible(sp.?) and set the G** D*** ****ING B****ES On FIRE!! This makes me feel better afterwards.

...

I realized that it may have to do with some of the blemishes on the back of my neck, but those cannot be removed for now... in the meantime, I cannot access an electric razor, so I will have to cope in the meantime.

Thank you all for the tips.

I suggest a psychiatrist. Obviously something bad happened to you concerning razors when you were younger.

Not necessarily. My mom twitches when she sees a spider and she hasn't had any thing bad happen to her concerning spiders.

But seriously what I said in my other post...

Set a razor on the coffee table in front of your couch, sit down, and stare at it until you stop twitching.

...might work

Sure she has. A long time ago when she was little somebody told her spiders were bad. The tiniest little thing can cause a lifelong fear. Of course, none of these fears are really anything to worry about unless it becomes a phobia. That's just weird.

I also recommend a psychologist, but you might try a few basic things first. The clippers that barber shops use are $10. Pick one up and try to get yourself comfortable with it. Turn it on and hold it. Put it up to your arm etc. I think with exposure you could conquer your problem. But if you can't, a psychologist can probably help.
