Innovations in GT 7 : Can we expect a diversified multi-game for Next Gen ?

I guess if talking about the earlier GTs and had the idea of adding various features, you may also have said "GT is for racing, adding photo mode is pointless it contributes nothing to racing", "GT is for racing, knocking over cones is too silly for that"). I don't think being a purist is the way to go, there's no limit of what to add in the games.

I've always thought that when you call a creation of your own with specific words, you have to stick with the words' definition unless you're arrogant enough to think you can redefine these words.

I think Kaz and Polyphony Digital (.... and most of us) should study what is the Gran Tourism about and its history.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_tourer

The idea of an opened world makes sense when you're aware of what the origins of the terms gran turismo are about.

However having some sense of purpose in order to guide the direction of the game design is quite important. Game development resources are always going to be limited, whether you're an indie studio or Rockstar, and so being able to choose which elements will contribute most to the type of game you want to make is the difference between a great game and an awful one.

Photo mode is pointless in a racing game, which is why it's either absent or a throwaway feature in the "hardcore" simulators. But it's an important feature in car porn games, or games that are intended to function as advertising for the vehicles featured in them. And it's an incredibly important feature if you want to create bullshots to use in advertising to mislead consumers as to the graphical fidelity of your game.

But Gran Turismo is not a game for racing purists, and so the arguments you chose to fight are strawmen. But Gran Turismo definitely has design goals. Personally, I think an open world would work fine in Gran Turismo*. I think Forza Horizon 3 and 4 do a better job of capturing the fun that I had hooning around and modifying cars in Gran Turismo 1 than Gran Turismo 6 or Sport do. But that doesn't mean that absolutely any feature would fit in Gran Turismo, because that's clearly not true.

*I also think it should be a separate game like Horizon, because I think Polyphony could get double work out of a lot of their assets, improve their release schedule, and make a lot more money. And it allows for a "hardcore racer" type game like Sport to exist while still selling the Gran Turismo brand to the more casual player who might enjoy an open world experience more.

You have pointed some very pertinent aspects of the problem.

Which I have previouly thought of before creating this thread : a diversified new Gen Gran Turismo 7 could work as a gaming suite of games :

- An opened world Gran Turismo for cruising and for specific racing events related to roads even if this contains only several restricted areas around the world.
- At the opposite side you get Gran Turismo Sport (or Sport mode) which could focus with hardcore sim-races
- And the centre of it you get the mainstream Gran Turismo 7 with its campaign mode and usual features.

And these all three linked between eachother and by Gran Turismo 7 centralizing the datas for each seperate parts of the "gaming suite".

You don't want to be combining three games into one, however Sport Mode can easily be integrated without too much hassle. It doesn't need to be created like a separate game; just another game mode like Arcade, Time Trial, Drift Trial and Custom Race.

Sure, you're right I've sorted it out to make my explanations more understandable.

But afterwards it occured to me that the way of separating 3 main features into 3 games related to one another could be commercialy and for a mid-term dev. quite pertinent and plausible.

I could see the livery editor, track editor, and the mobile app all being expanded upon. The official GTS companion app was rather disappointing and was entirely outclassed by just using the website on your phone. But then again, I did once see that PD was looking for a mobile developer, so maybe (like many other things in GTS) the GTS mobile app was just some sort of test for larger things to come.

I think if you want open world traffic driving sim. The best way PD can achieve this is by making some kind of A to B road generated like in GT5 and filled with AI traffic. (Just like Assetto Corsa Traffic Mod) I doubt we will ever see open world in GT game.

Wonder if it's possible for the home screen world, to be that open world.

Let's say Sport Mode is 24 players. Entering a room, players get matched. Wonder if all players could leave a car park and drive to the track. Maybe a two-minute time limit to get there.

Players can just sit in the garage and wait for the race to start or drive to the track, pass the gates and drive straight on the circuit.

Something like that would be cool for a Lobby.

That sounds like a lot of work for something that the vast majority would never do, and the tiny minority that do would do it a few times, then get tired of it.

There's a debate about doing the warm Up before a race. Some(a minority of GT players play Sport Mode anyway) just chat during the warm up. Some go out for a feel. Some change settings. Whether players get bored or not, it's there.
PD could have easily start the race once match making is done.

There may be even more work that takes away resources to do a full on open world. PD show they experiment with content. It's one way they could experiment with an open world. Of course, I don't think they'd do this, but I wonder if it could be done in this manner.

I haven't played Forza Horizon much, but I don't know how many players get tired of driving in a train from Victoria to Surfers Paradise.

It's pretty much what players do in Lobbys when they cruise.

I want real roads, and real roads turned into circuits as basically the racing pioneers did to set a race like Le Mans and Spa (for which I'd like to have their historic layouts in GT 7).

Why bothering creating stupid fantasy tracks like cape ring or Alsace when there are great roads to turn into circuits anywhere in the real world ?

And why not for the first time in a videogame having an extra-long loop (around 100 km) to cruise on and for endurance racing ? (À bit like Circuito de la Sierra in GT 6 but longer and more realistic ) Because after nearly 100 000 km on the Nordschleife I find it a bit short and annoying

Any talk about public roads can be addressed by including old road circuits in the style of Solitudering, Schleizer Drieck, Rouen, Reims and the like.

It can be fictitious so long as it isn't half baked and terrible like St Croix or Sardegna. They get too hung up on placing a track in a real location rather than making a good track first.

Look at this clip of the old Sachsenring for example. The racing would be great, and there's a sense you're actually travelling somewhere.

I mean, while PD were in NYC, They could have modelled Broadway. From The Bronx, down to lower Manhattan. Include the circuit and we all win.

I'd so love having such a raceway of old in a game

im surprised no ones mentioned the possibility of bikes when even kaz himself hinted at it

I haven't mentioned because I simply haven't thought of it :scared:

Actually I admit poeple may like bikes, but I hate poeple driving them here in France, they get on motocycles because théy can't stand driving a car in big City cénters, and rîde their 🤬 scooters like psychopaths ... I hate bikes in fact :lol:

ahah i'd love to ride a harley davidson against LMP opponents at Nurburgring or Daytona, if only for the sheer absurdity of being able to do it in a game

Hey, that's à fine idea but I'm quite sure I'd not help myself giving it some gentle nudges when I'd see one on track, just like with the crazy VGTs in some GT Sport lobbies

Or maybe not if the race is clean and challenging versus a moto GP for instance. In that case I admit the cléan racing would depend on the cars' behaviours, and on me though.

An open World Sequel from Gran Turismo would be great.

But I personally would be happy if the routes from the regular Gran Turismo were more varied.

Gran Turismo Sport is the personal low point for me in this area.

It is almost exclusively real race tracks.

And these I personally find quite boring.

I find the aspect of the feeling of freedom for example on a country track to drive the car out much more interesting.

Gran Turismo 3 + 4 had tracks with very interesting landscapes and cities.
That's exactly what I would like to see again in Gran Turismo 7.

Alone the fact that the developers put so much effort into this photo mode is a sign that they are also for variety.

I want this feeling not only to stay in a photo mode, but to come into the gameplay.

And if that's just fixed tracks, that's quite enough for me.

The following is a little inspiration from the Scape Mode of Gran Turismo Sport:
