Interesting No HUD

So, I had a friend over today and we were messing around in GT5, did some Top Gear stuff, drifting ect.
He decided to say that he can do an under 10min laptime for the 'Ring in a McLaren F1 Stealth with a GFPGT wheel on simulation with full force feedback. Let's just say he pulled a 13min at 1/3 of the track, so he dared me to do a lap my car, an Impreza WRX.
Well I had a WRX STi left over from the rally events with 345hp and sports tires.
1st time, I damaged the car so it didn't go straight and was unstable.
2nd time I upped the ante, I put it on No HUD, No Map, time change/weather change, all Asst. Off, Heavy damage, and MT. Made slight mistakes, rained in the middle of my lap and I did a 9:57 in 3D.
Now this wasn't very difficult but a quite bit challenging, especially the fact that I couldn't tell which gear I was in, so have you ever did a 'Ring lap with no HUD and Map?

I've wish they'd put the option to keep the timing on the screen though.

They do. It'd be nice if you could narrow it down a little more though, as you have to have ALL of the timing data, not just your current lap and split times. In a perfect world I'd just have that tucked up into one of the top corners of my roof, or just turn it off and have some robot tell me my lap times at the finish line.

Anyway, Ring laps (or any laps) without the HUD are great. The rally special events with no HUD are fun too, even just turning off the map improves them dramatically.

This is the only way I drive on the nurburgring. :)

If you consistently play with no HUD, you'll began to learn the true limit of a turn, and you'll notice you become faster. The way you approach turns is of much more beauty(listening to what RPMs you are at, and learning what gear is most suitable for a turn.)

Coming from PC sims like GTR2, rFactor and nKar, I'm used to driving car with no HUD. Even console racers like GRID, SHIFT and Forza 3 had option for HUD-less driving.

But the great thing about GT5 is that you can feel the tires slipping as well as good traction in the FFB which helps shifting/gearing tremendously. It's harder with FF (front drive) or AWD but with rear drive vehicles, it's quite obvious.

It's amazing driving in any premium car at night, at the 'ring, one of the best experiences in the game! :D

My only problem with no HUD is using a sequential shifter I find it hard to know what gear I am in. Only a few cars have what gear you are in displayed.

Everything off, on cockpit view, logitech g27 not using paddle but the shifter itself and raining on nurb at night is a blast. Just like driving IRL.

I always turn off the HUD. Waaaay better way to play!
I just wish there was a button to quickly toggle the hud. Take a quick peek at the tires, fuel, lap number and so on.

When you can stop looking at it, you'll start learning it. You can tell what gear you are in just by how fast you're going and where you are on the course, along with how your engine sounds. It will always be the same if you're running well, if it's odd you know you're up or down a gear, and you should know what gear to take the next corner.

If the update comes to fix this, I will be a happy man. When I did the endurance, I turn on the hud so I know on how many laps I need to run for every pit stop. After my first stop, I turn it back off through out.

I dont think I had HUD on since the option to take it off was availible

I dont have problems shifting with HUD off with most cars

No HUD: Awesome
No HUD in cockpit view: In some cars the lighting is good so you can actually use the gauges but if you try to use a McLaren F1(for example), you can't see anything

I've got to the point now where having the HUD on irritates me so much I don't want to use standard cars, that and the fact that cockpit view is by far superior!

No HUD certainly adds to the experience, but I only switch it off in cars you can see the instruments and ones that have a gear indicator.

I usually leave the map and time data on, but hud off, racing line off, assists off. As long as it's a premium car the hud stays off for me.

That would be true if their sound design was much better. All the cara sound like vacuum cleaners. Poor poor sound. Really a let down.

The HUD includes the time data and the map. They are all part of it.

I always turn the HUD of when I'm just going for a drive, especially on The Ring. Have to keep it on for racing though, otherwise you don't get vital information which a real race driver would, stupid of PD not to include an on/off toggle for it.

:)

I believe to turn off the map is a different option to just turning off the HUD. I noticed I pay much more attention to the track and really learnt the course by removing everything, its much more immersive.
However I do have one gripe, some cars it is very hard to see the dash, I wish when you flicked on the lights it lit up the dash like it does in a real car.

It would be even better if PD broke down the HUD into its menu, that way every separate bit of on screen information could have its on check box. That you the user could select what he wanted and what they didn't.

No HUD is amazing, that's the only way I drive my cars (when I'm not hotlaping).
Best [no HUD] time I did was (I think) 7:19.xxx in a bone stock McLaren F1.
Not that I was hotlaping...
