Has anyone seen the new Jaguar F-Type that is due to be released in 2004-05. I got a pic of it in one of my car mags, but I'll have to scan it.

The nose of the car is a bit rough because I had to paint over some other stuff that was on the pic and I didn't want to get the car.

here's the XK180 Concept

I think you mean the XK8, not XJ. And yes, they look way too similar to me. Still, if you compare most cars of the same era and genre, you'll come up with more similarities than differences. For these two: British (or they were), mid-1990's, luxury coupes. You could even clump the Ferrari 550M in with that group (assuming DB7 Vantage). This year seems to be starting with the Nissan 350Z/Chrysler Crossfire/Pontiac Solstice/Infiniti G35 Coupe/etc. etc. etc. ...and don't even get me started on the 1950's tailfin competition.

Too muscular for a Jag,

Finally, a Jaguar for the Big Boys. (most Jags are kinda on the feminine side except the XJ220 and the XJR-15)

um, did you guys look at the link?

Well I just did. That, combined with the earlier link (www.jag-lovers.com/ftype.html) now claiming that F-Type production is halted, has shown new light on Ford. There are two major, obvious clues that Jaguar will no longer be the Jaguar we remember: the S-Type and the X-Type.

The S: 90% similar to the Lincoln LS, options and all. Only the R saves the uniqueness of the Jag.

The X: A front-wheel-drive, 2.0L 4-cylinder Jaguar? Besides the fact that this car is already based on the Ford Mondeo, what other hints do you need to prove that Ford is playing Jaguar's badge, rather than...well, Jaguar itself?

So now the F-Type is canned. That makes sense; what parts could it have shared with anything else in the blue oval's domain? There's rumours of the sale of Aston Martin (which I doubt; they're merely cheapening it). Ford believes in big SUVs, bigger SUVs, and the Mustang (well, maybe replace that with big trucks). Anything else is fodder for the axe. Their economy cars come and go, most of them truly neither memorable nor worth having. The Mustang virtually unchanged technologically since 1968.

Let's face it: Ford sucks. Their newest ideas are 35 years old (GT40 and next-gen Mustang). Ironically, Volvo's PCC (and XC) can spark some real live into the Ford kingdom. Fifteen years ago, who would have thought?

Jaguar was never about flat out aggression. Much like Bentley, they believed in a sort of "gentleman's fast cruiser": powerful, luxurious, solid handling, and sleek & classy looks. The odd R models (XKR, XJR, etc) have had limited visual changes, but substantial changes under the skin. The X-Type flies in the face of this legacy; a farce, IMO. The two concepts we've mentioned here are a bit more like it. They leave behind the over-padded leather and bird's-eye-maple, but they move with the times. If only....
