Three men have been arrested following reports that a woman was gang-raped in an attack in Sweden that was streamed on Facebook Live.

The alleged assault took place in a flat in the town of Uppsala, north of Stockholm on Saturday (21 January).

Eye-witness Josefine Lundgren, 21, said she unwittingly viewed the live stream on a closed Facebook group and alerted police. She described seeing the victim being stripped and then sexually assaulted by a number of armed men in an attack that lasted several hours.

She told Sweden's Expressen newspaper: "He pulled her clothes off and lay on top of her."

She said the harrowing assault ended when police arrived and switched off the webcam.

Another online witness told the paper: "At first I thought it was a poorly orchestrated joke. The first thing you think is: 'How can you do such a thing to a girl? And how can you do it live?' It is totally sick."

According to Mail Online three men are being questioned by police while forensic scientists are investigating the apartment. The woman is said to be recovering from her ordeal in hospital.

It's the latest controversy for Facebook Live, after a Chicago man with learning difficulties was tortured online earlier this month.

IBTimes.

Infowars.

How ****ing stupid can you be? To rape someone is one, but streaming it for the world to see and have your evidence on a silver platter? ****ing retards.

I think this show how ****ed up people can become and how pornography is going too far nowadays (I've just read an article about Ovidie (french porn actress and director) and about how she was digust at pornography now. She said it became too hardcore and girls are forced to do stuff that arent ok. She also mention she would have never started porn in the states it's in now.

Wrong thread.

You are nowhere near to being on topic here.

One witness said that there were 60 people watching the livestream and only two called the police, so you may have a point there.

Wasn't the livestream in a closed Facebook group? Anyone know what the group was about?

As twisted as it sounds, the lack of people calling the cops over it could be explained by the video being aimed at a group of not-so-upstanding members of society.

I don't know the group myself, by media reports says that it's a group with thousands of members, and it's supposed to be a platform where members can post questions and requests for other members without restrictions or inhibitions. Apparently it's known for having a crude language.

In October the police stopped another live stream in the same group, when some school kids made threats about a school shooting.

It's also worth mentioning that the police doesn't currently have any video material showing the actual assault.

I'm pretty sure that the confiscated phones will provide that. Seeig how they were still filming when the police came barging in.

Edit.

And besides that, the Internet already plastered their faces all over the place, taking screenshots and parts of the video.

I don't know if streamed video is saved on the phone or if it's just uploaded to Facebook? The police did ask anyone who has footage of the assault to send it to them.

Sickening... Shame on the people who watched and did nothing.

Even worse, some actually cheered them on.

Absolutely sickening.

If there's any "positive" side to this, it's that they were stupid enough to film their crime.

Pieces of crap.

I really am fed up with the concept of Facebook Live because all it seems to be used for is evil and adds even more horror to already horrifying incidents such as this. Your just giving bad people yet another global platform to brag about doing bad things.

But on the other hand, it makes the police work a bit easier.

I don't understand the fascination with these stories. Yup, people are awful, I don't need a constant reminder - like a "live gang rape" thread popping up to the top of the opinions forum all day, just to make sure I have to think about it.

This scares the crap out of me being a father.

My gut feeling is this is not a new thing though, as touched upon its the stupidity of assuming they wont get caught. I would hesitate to put any blame on the Facebook Live medium, heinous acts of hedonism and violence occur with or without Facebook its just put it out in the public domain.

Having said this there is a moral responsibility that facebook (social media) could/should provide to assist in criminal convictions- Even with my opinion as having a daughter that there would be no level of just punishment that I would be happy with.

I didn't mean to suggest that you posted it in the wrong place. I meant to point out that even if I don't want to think about or read this story or stories like it, I can't avoid your thread title without leaving the site.

It will fall off the front page. Don't worry. I see no one finding this story fascinating.
That said we would have never known about it if Dennisch would not have posted it.
I'm curious why the title bothers you to read it.

I'm sure that there were 1000 people raped in various ways on the 21st (I don't want to know how many it actually is). I don't know about 999 of them. I'm fine with that. It's not that the title bothers me a ton, I just don't really want to dwell on it. This post will shove that line right back up into people's faces.

2 horrific stories about Facebook Live and you come to believe all its used for is evil?

Nice job literally jumping to a conclusion.

It's still a figurative jump.

This is the news in general. Too much attention on murderers and rapists doing deplorable things whilst real life heroes, good news stories etc dont get a look in.

I know the world can be a bad place, I don't need graphic reminders every day.

Or the bystander effect.

You do nothing as you're expecting someone else do to something.

Update: A witness said that the guy with the camera entered a room where another man appeared to be raping an unconscious woman. He filmed it briefly before he went out again. Then he got into some kind of argument with some of the viewers. The third man is the owner of the apartment, according to this witness.

A few hours later a second livestream begun where they tried to make the woman say that she had not been raped, and that is when the police arrived.

The man who was filmed with the woman is held by the police on the stronger suspicion of rape while the two others are held on the weaker suspicion of rape.

The police does not have all the video material yet.

The facebook group is called "the biggest group without rules", has about 60,000 members and can best be described as FUBAR.

Or maybe they weren't all Swedish. I'm sure I probably could call the Swedish police from Australia if I really wanted to, but I'm sure it would take me a while to do so. If I even managed to get hold of someone who spoke fluent enough English to understand what I was trying to say.

Then they wont believe you.

In most country in Europe if you call for police emergency you'll have someone that talk english. I know it's that way in Switzerland and we have 3 other mother-tongue (german/italian/french). I've been to sweden and I didnt encounter anyone not speaking english.

It's a Swedish group, so most of its members are probably Swedish or Swedish speaking. The name is "den största gruppen utan regler MED SVERIGES LAGAR".

And you'd have no problem finding someone fluent enough in English if you make a call to the Swedish police. Most people here are pretty good at English.
